The ACLU's Racial Justice Program is committed to challenging the "school to prison pipeline," a disturbing national trend wherein children are funneled out of public schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Many of these children have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse or neglect, and would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished and pushed out. "Zero-tolerance" policies criminalize minor infractions of school rules, while high-stakes testing programs encourage educators to push out low-performing students to improve their schools' overall test scores. Celebrity culture can be such a hazy thing. They are human beings, but they are also the untouchable behind the curtain. What happens when you cross that lines and unveil that mask and see them for who they are: just vulnerable people like you and me? Does it take away from the fantasy or are you able to look past it and still play make believe? A really interesting piece on celeb culture from a journalist who experienced an epiphany at an event she attended when she saw behind the actor’s stage and saw it was just a big set.
