OCCUPY COMIX: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ISSUE 2- HOME, SWEET, HOME
In 2008, we discovered bankers and speculators had been gambling with our most valuable asset, our homes. Now, because of the foreclosure crisis Wall Street banks created with their lies and greed, millions of Americans have lost their homes. 15 million Americans owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. Worldwide people are uniting to occupy and reclaim new spaces as home while others can hardly keep their “real” homes whether they have to pay rent, a mortgage or are just having a hard time.
This is causing all of us to question the permanence and stability of the idea of home.
We want to know what you think of home after Occupy Wall Street?
It can be a personal or global reflection
It can be fantastic and imaginative or simple and real.
It can be a journey back home
Consider the new movement as home
It can be inspired from the recent foreclosure protests-
http://occupyourhomes.org/
It can be a story of someone’s struggle to keep his or her home or the struggle to set up a new home
Be creative – we are not just looking for graphic novel journalism (although nothing is wrong with that). From superheroes to super moms tell us your story about home.
We are looking for your comics and also small poster art- only 1 page, or 1-4 pg of a comic story. 1 page poems, stories and illustrations/photos to accompany them are welcome but cannot be longer than 1 page.

A display of photomontages imagining how London could be affected by climate change is on display at the Museum of London from 1 October 2010 to 6 March 2011. The display and events form part of the Mayor’s Story of London festival and the events are funded by Renaissance London. Like postcards from the future, familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones. They bring home the full impact of global warming, food scarcity, rising sea levels and how all Londoners will need to innovate and adapt to survive.

A Norwegian man who made a bet with his friend that he could get a million giraffe pictures before the end of this year has already passed his target with months to go.
It was an offhand comment over a beer that launched the quirky challenge. Ola Helland, a 25-year-old web designer, explains: "When I was out drinking with my good friend Jørgen on the 6th of June 2009 I said a sentence that changed my life." Picture: Ola Helland/OneMillionGiraffes.com.
Ola Helland continued: "We were discussing the internet and how amazing it is, when I said: 'There are really no limits anymore. Anything is possible! I could easily collect one million giraffes if I wanted to." Picture: Ola Helland/OneMillionGiraffes.com

There are only three animated series which have been honored by a Peabody award. The most recent recipient of this most revered honor in visual media is "Avatar: The Last Airbender." A sweeping epic set in an Asian and Inuit inspired fantasy world, the series focuses on the struggles of the Avatar. Not to be confused with the blue, cat-eyed aliens, this Avatar is the Hindu and Tibetan representation of spirituality and reincarnation on Earth.
"Avatar: The Last Airbender," in addition to earning a Peabody, also saw immense commercial success, becoming a veritable animated blockbuster. An instant hit with audiences across the globe, it’s series finale alone drew more than 19 million viewers worldwide and, unsurprisingly, this success spurred Nickelodeon, the animation studio behind the series, to proceed with a live action adaptation. Critics and studio executives went so far as to proclaim it as the studio's answer to Star Wars.
In late December of 2008 the film version of Avatar the Last Airbender began production with four White leads. The casting language for the auditions choosing them read, Caucasian and any other ethnicity. Subsequent casting calls for secondary roles and for extras called for specific racial and cultural affiliations. In fact the casting director, Dee Dee Rickets, actually encouraged wearing cultural regalia saying, "If your from Korea were a Kimono, if your from Belgium wear some lederhosen." Wrongly attributing the national origin of both items of clothing. Rickets also went to northern Virginia and other locations specifically scouting in Asian American communities for actors in background roles. A similar effort was not taken in the search for the leads.
Also raising concerns for fans were comments made by one of the lead actors, Jackson Rathbone. Sokka, the character Rathbone plays is inspired by Inuit culture. In an interview with MTV Rathbone made culturally insensitive comments in regards to his casting and the controversy it was generating ""I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan. It's one of those things where, hopefully, the audience will suspend disbelief a little bit."
The comments and casting decisions quickly grew into a controversy and that controversy spawned a media advocacy movement composed of a wide array of individuals including fans of the series, academics, and media professionals. I sat down with Marissa Lee one of the founders of this movement. Lee is one of the founders of the Racebending website and one of its administrators. We sat down to talk about what changed the initial widespread excitement about the film and series into a grassroots protest movement against the film and casting practices it highlights.

Spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic said Newman died yesterday.
Newman finished chemotherapy treatment for cancer in August and it was widely reported in the US that he had only weeks to live.
In June this year, a neighbour and business partner said the actor told him about the disease the previous year.
In May, Newman pulled out of directing John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men for unspecified health reasons.
The actor's representative Toni Howard had previously dismissed the cancer claims as simply "not true".
Newman retired from acting in 2006 after a 50-year career that included Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1971), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).
Newman was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning best actor for his role in The Color Of Money in 1986.
