state of 3DPC gaming.
During said presentation I was showed a series of rather informative slides, one of which stood out far more than others:
That’s right, their research shows that PC game software sales will eclipse console game software sales by 2014!
I know what you’re thinking. “Madness! How can that be possible!? Nobody buys PC games anymore, they hardly even sell them in stores!”
Well, you’re absolutely right.
As you may have guessed, the rise in PC game sales is due to the ever expanding number of digital mediums which make it possible to not only purchase, but spend money in PC games.
As you can see, the majority of PC game sales are not packaged at all, they’re mostly digital. Moreover, the forms of digital distribution and sales associated with them are growing exponentially each and every day.
You may be familiar with rapidly growing digital distribution channels such as Steam, Direct2Drive and GoG that sell full games both new and old directly to players over the internet. However, let’s not forget the other ways in which gamers spend money on PC games.
World of Warcraft, which is run as a monthly subscription based MMO, racks up sales in the billions each and every year due to it’s tremendous player base:
And WoW is certainly not the only subscription based MMO out there. New MMO’s like TERA, Guild Wars 2, and The Old Republic are still on the horizon, and they too will contribute to the growth of PC game sales.
However, there’s still more. High profile Free-To-Play games such as League of Legends, World of Tanks and the upcoming Tribes: Ascend have their own business models which allow players to play the game for free, but spend money on in-game features and items to enhance their experience. Gamers spend millions on these “mico-transactions” each and every year.
Let’s also not forget the thousands of free to play Korean MMO’s you’ve never heard of and browser and Facebook based mobile and social games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars that rake in billions a year for companies like Zynga.state of 3DPC gaming.

The video gaming rental market is just about to change well Eventually that is.
Let's hope that the quality of this image won't be analogous to the quality of the Qwikster service. As of today, that's all about to change. Eventually.
Effective "soon," Netflix is about to make a massive branding change, essentially splitting the company's online streaming business and its mail order media business into two distinct properties. A blog entry from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings outlines that the Netflix name will remain with the online streaming service, while the DVD rental business will be re-branded Qwikster. For everyone hastily scribbling down notes on jokes to make about this fairly awful new name, make sure to include the Qwikster Twitter account, which presumably is not under the control of the folks at Netflix--unless, of course, Qwikster's new mascot is a thoroughly blazed up Elmo who enjoys bench pressing, casual misogyny, and using the word "shyt" a lot.
Almost an afterthought in Hastings' announcement, though likely a fairly big deal for anyone reading this story on this website, is the fact that video games will be added to the Qwikster service. This will include Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii titles at the outset, and users who opt to rent games will incur a slightly higher subscription fee, much as anyone who rents Blu-ray discs does. There is no specific launch date for the games service, unfortunately. All the hastily photoshopped announcement image (see above) says is, again, "soon."
So now there will be 3 main players RedBox GameFly and Qwikster by Netflix. The video gaming rental market is just about to change well Eventually that is.... more

Remember the ‘Hot Coffee’ incident in GTA: San Andreas? You know, the one with all the sex, and the outcry, and the mothers smothering their children as if the end of the world was nigh? Well, it’s happened again, just on a slightly smaller scale, within Techland’s recent release, Dead Island.
Purna, one of the game’s protagonists, has a skill which can be unlocked that is titled ‘Gender Wars’. No harm there, right? Unfortunately though, someone digging around in the PC version of the game’s code has discovered the original title for the skill, and that’s where the fun begins. Entitled ‘Feminist Whore’, the skill offers Purna a 15% attack bonus against male enemies.
The outcome of this discovery is an apology from Techland, promises of an investigation into the matter, and basically, a whole load of free marketing for Dead Island, over what, at the end of the day, isn’t really a huge deal. I’m sure I’ve heard worse in games before, and I know I definitely have in both books and movies.Remember the ‘Hot Coffee’ incident in GTA: San Andreas? You know, the one... more

Microsoft has permanently banned some users who it claims have illegally accessed downloadable content.
The announcement was posted on the official Xbox forums. Here’s the full text:
During the course of a recent investigation, we have discovered users who illegitimately accessed Xbox LIVE Marketplace downloadable content. Our investigation reveals that this access was intentional and not accidental, constituting a blatant violation of the Terms of Use for the service. We will not divulge additional information regarding individual suspensions for these offenses.
Please know that we are being very careful regarding these suspensions, and have clear evidence regarding each account issued a permanent suspension from the service. We apologize for any frustration or confusion resulting from our inability to share individual details, and thank you all for your cooperation in this matter.
Cheers!
The “Cheers!” at the end makes the bans seem a lot friendlier, don’t you think? Eurogamer reports that some of the banned Live members dispute the charges. Also, the Eurogamer article reveals that the bans aren’t necessarily lifetime ban — the users will just have to figure out a way to live until 12/31/9999, when the bans expire. Our advice: start taking a multivitamin.Microsoft has permanently banned some users who it claims have illegally accessed... more

Today Mircrosoft announced new Halo: Anniversary Maps that will ship with Anniversary edition of Halo: Combat Evolved. The new maps are Timberland, Prisoner and Installation 04. Also making its return is Beaver Creek, a classic Halo 2 map.
The multiplayer maps that will ship with the game will feature two different versions of the map. One will be the classic layout and design, while the other will be the modified version designed to work with Halo: Reach’s abilities.
Here are the descriptions for the three new maps announced today:
Timberland is “Halo: Anniversary’s” beautifully reimagined multiplayer map from “Halo PC,” set in the classically alpine environment so familiar to “Halo.” Once serving as a watch point for the immense relay complex below, the monitoring outposts nestled atop this ridge became a staging ground for human forces during their time on Installation 04. Toward the end of the conflict, a Covenant assault brought the marines here to a tragic end. Timberland is a tree-covered valley, sporting undulating hills, surging rivers, and a terrain perfect for large-scale vehicle mayhem. (8 – 16 players)
The return of “Halo: Combat Evolved’s” Prisoner delivers a claustrophobic and frenetic multiplayer experience now elaborately recreated for “Halo: Anniversary.” These spinning confinement platforms are a testament to the technological prowess of the Forerunners. In the event of a security breach, the facility’s suborbital location and frigid temperature were thought to be able to keep any threat at bay, but it appears those plans were… optimistic. Prisoner is a multi-level facility, with tightly-woven corridors and many bridges and ramps, perfect for the chaos of close-range combat. As people recover from Gamescon this past week, more news is starting to come out for Battlefield 3. It was announced and confirmed by DICE that BF 3 will have a Team Deathmatch mode. The new TD mode however will only support 24 players and have no vehicles. TD is said to focus more on tight infantry portions of regular maps.
I personally this this good idea since this will cater to all types of gamer play types. I wasn't much of a fan of the Conquest mode in Bad Company 2 since when ever i joined a game, memebers from both teams would just screw around with the vehicals. The TD mode in Medal of Honor (which DICE worked on) was fun and intense in such a small map, focused on covering fire and team work. Either way DICE aims to please those who want to reck havok with vehicles and those who want an infantry only battle. As people recover from Gamescon this past week, more news is starting to come out for... more

Major League Gaming announced yesterday that it has officially added League of Legends to the 2011 Pro Circuit. The new addition will make its MLG debut at the event in Raleigh, NC on August 27th. This isn't the first time a new game was added to the MLG Circuit at Raleigh as StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty also debuted at the event last season.
Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends (sometimes simply called "LoL") is an action-RTS game that was heavily inspired by Warcraft III's Defense of the Ancients custom map. Since the game's launch in 2009, over 15 million players have downloaded League of Legends and 1.4 million people play it each day. With this kind of popularity, it was only a matter of time until it reached the Pro Circuit.
Four of the best teams from across North America will be competing at Raleigh next weekend for a chance to win $20,000. They are: Epik Gaming, Curse Gaming, Team Solo Mid, and Counter Logic Gaming. Matches will be streamed live online and fans can watch Pool Play on Saturday, August 27 from 10:00AM – 8:00PM ET and the Championship Finals on Sunday, August 28 from 10:00AM – 1:45PM ET free on www.majorleaguegaming.com.Major League Gaming announced yesterday that it has officially added League of Legends... more

Xbox LIVE Enforcement “Unicorn Ninja” Keeps Service Safe and Fun for Everyone
Hackers, cheaters, phishers, account thieves, game code modifiers, communication abuses – the Xbox LIVE Policy and Enforcement team polices it all, even sometimes actual crimes, says Boris Erickson, Xbox LIVE enforcement unicorn ninja (yes, that is his actual job title). Redmond, Wash. Aug. 2, 2011.
At Microsoft, a small, tight-knit team works long hours – often sorting through downright offensive content – to help ensure that the company’s booming Xbox LIVE service is safe, non-offensive and fun for all.
Microsoft PR issued a story about a special team of employees that few gamers have heard about, nor do they ever want to run into them. The text is presented here in an unabridged format.
In an otherwise typical Microsoft hallway, a black curtain stretches across the doorway to a large room. The whiteboard next to it offers this ambiguous, if not curiosity-inducing, explanation: “Please do not disturb. Sensitive material behind curtain.”
Resized to 47% (was 1500 x 2250) - Click image to enlargePosted Image
Behind the black curtain is a unique team of Microsoft employees. Their existence is not widely known, and probably for good reason – if you have a close encounter with a member of Xbox LIVE’s Policy and Enforcement team, chances are you’re on the wrong end of right.
Hackers, cheaters, phishers, account thieves, game code modifiers, communication abuser – they help police it all, including actual crimes in some rare instances. The team is there to help make sure Xbox LIVE is safe, non-offensive and fun for all users.
“If you’re playing a game on Xbox LIVE, and somebody snipes you from across the map and you drop the F-bomb, we’re not going to ban you – not for the occasional slip. We focus on the really bad stuff,” says Boris Erickson, Xbox LIVE Enforcement Unicorn Ninja. Yes, that is his actual job title.
Adds Erickson: “We are not here to be the arbiters of all speech. But there are certainly some kinds of communication on Xbox LIVE that crosses a line – racism, homophobia, sexism, offensive comments about nationalities, and more.”
Day in and day out, the inboxes of Erickson and his fellow enforcers are piled high with stacks of complaints about offensive behavior, speech, and materials. They dutifully sort through it all and decide what’s next. That could be requiring a user to remove an offensive word or phrase from their profile to – in the more egregious cases – outright banning users.
“Or, as we like to say, inviting them to not be our customer,” Erickson says. “These are paid subscriptions we’re taking away, so we want to make sure we’re doing exactly the right thing.”
All Xbox LIVE users agree to a code of conduct when subscribing to the entertainment service. But, as Xbox LIVE tops 35 million users – and, as it incorporates an ever-widening range of entertainment, gaming, and communication features – it’s a given that there will be opportunists and rule-breakers, Erickson says.
But the team’s director, Stephen Toulouse (known widely by his Microsoft e-mail alias, Stepto), says despite Xbox LIVE’s explosive growth over the last several years, the number of complaints his team handles has remained tiny in proportion to the growing number of people who use the service.
“Looking at the stats, the cross-section of bad apples we deal with every day is small – typically less than one percent of the overall population,” Toulouse says. “The user complaint volume has tended to stay relatively flat compared to the line of new users. What that says to me is that our efforts are having an impact, and also that we’re broadening our audience. We’re bringing in different people that want to experience different things on Xbox LIVE, not just gaming, and at the end of the day that’s going to improve everything.”
The Explosion of Xbox LIVE
When Toulouse joined Xbox LIVE in 2007, the entertainment service had not yet reached one million users online at the same time.
“Enforcement was literally done by one guy with a spreadsheet who would go through the complaints once a week,” Toulouse says.
Though it took years to hit the one million user mark, it took one year to hit two million concurrent users.
“We knew Xbox LIVE was going to explode,” Toulouse says. “We knew we were on the cusp of something huge, especially when we saw how many people came into the service with the launch of Halo 3.”
The folks at Xbox LIVE, including Toulouse, wanted to stay ahead of the game. He slowly started assembling a team, and they started designing a tool to help the team effectively police the growing community of users. The result was a software program called Vulcan to help enforcers handle and escalate complaints.Xbox LIVE Enforcement “Unicorn Ninja” Keeps Service Safe and Fun for... more

For all the sports fans out there who enjoy enjoy their ESPN on their Xbox 360, Microsoft might have just made your day. An updated version of the ESPN service will be available pretty soon that inclused a new split-screen feature. So no more wondering what is going on with another favorite team while watching another game. You can also have one split-screen set up to show sport highlights while watching your favorite team on the other. I'd personally be more interested if they were to incorporate a feature like this into a sports game...but this a good direction to please sports fans. For all the sports fans out there who enjoy enjoy their ESPN on their Xbox 360,... more
