The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating one of their own officers after video surfaced showing him punching a special needs woman in the face.
Passenger Jermaine Green, who recorded the incident on his cell phone, said that 42-year-old Julie Nelson had been polite before two deputies tried to remove her from the bus.
“They said get off the bus,” Green recalled to NBC’s Los Angeles affiliate. “She then started cursing at (the female deputy). You could tell she had special needs. After that they grab her, she curses him out, calls him a big shot, next thing you know he gives her a big shot.”
In a 911 call released Wednesday, a caller said Nelson had threatened to “beat up” other passengers. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said she also had a four convictions of violence against police officers.
Nelson, who is homeless and known to be living behind a CVS Pharmacy, was taken into custody on a 72-hour psychiatric hold without being arrested.
At a press conference Wednesday, Sheriff Lee Baca admitted that the video was “disturbing.”
“If the deputy who swung an elbow at the lady is looking at that as a sensible solution, we need to retrain that individual and hold him accountable,” he explained.
Childhood friends of Nelson told NBC L.A. that she had a history of mental problems, but had not been taking her medication.
“We’re going to take her and put her somewhere safe, same thing we always do, feed her, help her out, we love her,” one friend said.

Death In The Devil's Chair: Florida Man's Pepper Spray Death Raises Questions About Jail Abuse
This is a story written by Radley Balko
Radley.Balko@huffingtonpost.com
What police are capable of today is abhorently disgusting! The average, ordinary citizen has no chance against jackbooted authorities such as those that incarcerated a man that needed both physical and mental health help.
In a way, we all share a small part of the blame for what was done to Nick Christie. And we'll keep on sharing blame for those that may experience this abuse in the future if we do not put a stop to this kind of attitude to continue with those we think are protecting and serving us, when in actuality, they're our worst enemies. Worse because they are the real homegrown terrorists we imagine that's just around the next "fear corner"!

The Reddit it post in the link describes the personal story of an individual who was recently housed at the Pelham GA city jail. The post describes abuses by the staff which include: denying access to medication, housing inmates in toxic enviroments, denying prisoner's access to their own doctor's contact info, and threatening the constitutional right to a fair trial of those individuals who decide to complain about their treatment. Despite popular belief, all detainees(especially those awaiting trial) are entitled to constitutional protections. Odd thing about the story is it is related to the same jail that housed Fabian Avery III, a 17 yr old who died while in custody:
http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/dpp/news/teen-dies-at-pelham-pre-release-center-031811
While I won't argue that the kid was innocent, there is stil no reason why a 17yr who was complaining about being sick should have been thrown into isolation and allowed to suffer a slow painful death. So what did the brilliant state of Georgia decide to do after the unexpected death of a teenager? It sent in its officials from the Fulton County Sherriff's office and the GBI. Their findings? Everything is perfectly fine at the jail
Since everything was totally OK according to officials(not according to the people who actually had to stay there for more than a couple of hours), multiple counties throughout GA decided that Pelham is the perfect place to send their inmates once they overfilled their jails. I guess re-evaluating why the state incarcerates so many people was never an option
Pelham only charges $35 a day to feed, house, and transport its detainees. I guess one must give up a few basic human rights for such a bargain
Has GA really become so broke that it is willing to turn a blind eye to a place that, imo, killed a 17 yr old just so it can save some cash? Or is it just a sign of the times that a police state is needed so that ticket revenue can be utilized to boost a down economy? The Reddit it post in the link describes the personal story of an individual who was... more

"One hundred years ago, an American pharmacist named Wilbur Scoville developed a scale to measure the intensity of a pepper’s burn. The scale – as you can see on the widely used chart to the left – puts sweet bell peppers at the zero mark and the blistering habanero at up to 350,000 Scoville Units.
I checked the Scoville Scale for something else yesterday. I was looking for a way to measure the intensity of pepper spray, the kind that police have been using on Occupy protestors including this week’s shocking incident involving peacefully protesting students at the University of California-Davis.
As the chart makes clear, commercial grade pepper spray leaves even the most painful of natural peppers (the Himalayan ghost pepper) far behind. It’s listed at between 2 million and 5.3 million Scoville units. The lower number refers to the kind of pepper spray that you and I might be able to purchase for self-protective uses. And the higher number? It’s the kind of spray that police use, the super-high dose given in the orange-colored spray used at UC-Davis.

Every other case involving people arrested for filming cops has been thrown out of court, but media promulgates hoax that recording police is illegal.
Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones
Infowars.com
Wednesday, August 31, 2011
41-year old Illinois mechanic Michael Allison faces life in jail for recording police officers after authorities hit him with eavesdropping charges based on the hoax that it is illegal to film cops, a misnomer that has been disproved by every other case against people filming police officers being thrown out of court.
The state of Illinois is trying to charge Allison with five counts of wiretapping, each punishable by four to 15 years in prison.
Allison refused a plea deal which would have seen him serve no jail time but would reinforce the hoax that it is illegal to film police officers, as well as acting as a chilling effect to prevent other Americans from filming cases of police brutality.
Allison has chosen to reject the plea bargain and fight to clear his name via a jury trial, arguing, “If we don’t fight for our freedoms here at home we’re all going to lose them.”
A judge is expected to rule on when the case will go to trial over the next two weeks.
As another report concerning the Allison case documents, in every other example where people have been arrested for recording police officers, the charges have been dropped and the case thrown out of court. Despite this fact, the state is so desperate to make an example out of Allison that an assistant from the Attorney General’s Office was recently sent to speak against him during a hearing.
The notion that it is illegal to film police officers is a mass hoax that is being promulgated by authorities, the media, and police officers themselves.

A federal jury says Chicago law enforcement must pay $330,000 to a family after officers shot their dog during a home raid that turned up no illegal activity.
Thomas Russell, then 18, opened the door to his home in February 2009 to find police officers with their guns drawn. He asked if he could lock up his 9-year-old black labrador, named Lady, before letting the officers inside. The Chicago Tribune describes what happened next:
Police refused the request and came into the house, the lawsuit said. When Lady came loping around the corner with her tail wagging, Officer Richard Antonsen shot the dog, according to the suit, which alleged excessive force, false arrest and illegal seizure for taking the dog's life.
The cops handcuffed Russell and his 16-year-old brother, and eventually charged Russell with obstructing their operation. He was found not guilty. According to NBC, the jury awarded $175,000 to Russell, $85,000 to his little brother, and $35,000 each to the brothers' parents. The officer who shot the dog owes $2,000 in damages, and his supervisor owes $1,000, according to NBC.
A law enforcement spokeswoman told the Tribune that the officers were protecting themselves.

University of Cincinnati officials are investigating the school's police department after a summer school student died after campus cops shot him with a Taser.
Everette Howard, 18, from Cincinnati, had a heart attack early Saturday after a confrontation with campus cops investigating a reported assault.
The incident took place outside a dorm where Howard was staying during a six-week college prep program. He was set to enroll at University of Cumberlands in Kentucky in the fall.
School officials said officers arrived at the dorm at around 3 a.m. and were approached by Howard, who was agitated and had balled his fists, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.
The cops told Howard to back off but he refused, officials said. An officer then shot him once with a Taser.
Howard crumpled to the ground. When the officers checked on him, he was incoherent, officials said. Paramedics arrived, and Howard went into cardiac arrest soon after.
He was pronounced dead at University Hospital.
UC Spokesman Greg Hand told The Enquirer an investigation "ongoing."
The officer who fired the stun gun was on paid leave, local reports say.
UC Assistant Dean of Students Dawn Wilson said the school was "distraught" over the young man's death.
"I just wanted to be here to express my support to students and my condolences to his friends and family and the people who loved him," Wilson told WLTW television.
Howard was a champion wrestler in high school and graduated in the top 10% of his class this spring.
He was enrolled in the university's Upward Bound program, which helps prepare poor high school students for college, The Enquirer said.
On Sunday, dozens of students gathered on UC's campus for a candlelight vigil, and more than 1,400 people posted condolences for the young athlete's family on a Facebook tribute page.
"He was probably the most talented student as far as writing skills, oral, leadership; anytime I had trouble with the rest of the group he would help me out," Ekundayo Igeleke, Howard's mentor in the summer program, told WLTW.
"The world didn't get to see who he really was, to fully develop into the man he could have been," Igeleke said.
The Hamilton County coroner said Howard had been shot by a Taser once before in 2010.
Details of that incident were not immediately available.

'We were not aware of how the lemonade was made, who made the lemonade, of what the lemonade was made with,' says police chief in Midway, Ga.
Three girls trying to raise money to go to a waterpark thought that a lemonade stand would do the trick. But then they met the long arm of the law — their local police chief.
The girls had started up their stand in Midway, Ga., when Police Chief Kelly Morningstar and a deputy drove by.
"They told us to shut it down," 10-year-old Skylar Roberts was quoted as saying by The Coastal Source news website.
"It’s kind of crazy that we couldn’t sell lemonade," added 14-year-old Casity Dixon. "It was fun, but we had to listen to the cops and shut it down."
Morningstar defended his action and received the support of Midway's mayor. "We had told them, 'We understand you guys are young, but still, you’re breaking the law, and we can’t let you do it anymore,'" Morningstar said. "The law is the law, and we have to be consistent with how we enforce the laws."
That city law requires a business and food permits ($50 a day), even if the stand was at the home of one of the girls.
Health issues were also a concern, Morningstar said. "We were not aware of how the lemonade was made, who made the lemonade, of what the lemonade was made with, so we acted accordingly by city ordinance,” he said.
News of the bust caused an outpouring of local support for the trio — and The Coastal Source said it had given the girls tickets to the waterpark.

Radley Balko, a civil libertarian best known for his work at Reason, Cato, and the Huffington Post, talks with John Stossel about the need for citizens to be able to film the police. In one clip, they show how an officer intentionally throws himself into a bicyclist while proclaiming the cyclist intentionally rammed him. In another clip, a policeman denies drawing his gun at a snowball fight when the video clearly shows that he did. Should the police feel afraid to act if they are filmed? If they are doing their job correctly, why should they? At the end of the show, Stossel dicusses the corruption of Nixon’s vice president Spiro Agnew and the corruption he and many other politicians were found guilty of. Isn’t it good that we have a record of their corruption so that justice could be served? Shouldn’t the same standard be applied to the police? Stossel’s final point: individuals deserve privacy, individuals who get public money (such as ACORN administrators) deserve less privacy, and people who receive government money and who have the ability to forcibly control you – and the authority to hold a gun to your head – deserve to be held fully accountable and absolutely should be video recorded.Radley Balko, a civil libertarian best known for his work at Reason, Cato, and the... more

After the arrests of several protesters for dancing at the Jefferson Memorial Saturday was caught on video, the U.S. Park Police has launched an inquiry into the conduct of the arresting officers, according to an NBC4 report.
The U.S. Park Police department has launched an inquiry into the actions of several officers during the arrests of several protesters May 28.

The protesters were reportedly protesting a recent appeals court decision that bans dancing at Washington's memorials. Video shot at the scene and posted to Youtube shows protesters on the ground with park police officers on top of them, and one protester being thrown to the ground by an officer.
A Park Police spokesperson told NBC4 that the chief of the park police has asked the agency's office of professional responsibility to "initiate an inquiry into the activities of these officers."
"It's going to be an all-encompassing inquiry, and so anyone that was involved, that can be identified in the video is going to be part of the inquiry," according to the spokesperson.
A News 4 photographer was also escorted off the grounds of the memorial during the protest, according to the NBC report.

Reporting from Washington— The Supreme Court gave police more leeway to break into homes or apartments in search of illegal drugs when they suspect the evidence otherwise might be destroyed.
Ruling in a Kentucky case Monday, the justices said that officers who smell marijuana and loudly knock on the door may break in if they hear sounds that suggest the residents are scurrying to hide the drugs.
Residents who "attempt to destroy evidence have only themselves to blame" when police burst in, said Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. for an 8-1 majority.
In her dissent, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said she feared the ruling gave police an easy way to ignore 4th Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. She said the amendment's "core requirement" is that officers have probable cause and a search warrant before they break into a house.
"How 'secure' do our homes remain if police, armed with no warrant, can pound on doors at will and …forcibly enter?" Ginsburg asked.
An expert on criminal searches said the decision would encourage the police to undertake "knock and talk" raids.
"I'm surprised the Supreme Court would condone this, that if the police hear suspicious noises inside, they can break in. I'm even more surprised that nearly all of them went along," said John Wesley Hall, a criminal defense lawyer in Little Rock, Ark.

If this stands and one of these cowards tries that shit at my house, i'm going postal, commando and Doom on all of them!! Fuck it!!!

FATHER SEEKS PUBLIC'S HELP TO
FIND JUSTICE FOR 7 YEAR OLD SON
A QUESTION TO ALL AMERICANS;
Do Police and Government Agencies That We Trust to Uphold the Law and Protect the Innocent, (Especially Children), Have the Right at Their Own Discretion, to Ignore 2 Felony Crimes Commited against a 7 Year Old Child and Blame the Child for, "CAUSING HIS OWN DEATH"?
Believe it or not it's true, 7 year-old Tyler James was a VICTIM of two Felony crimes that resulted in his death. The authorities here in Lake County, California purposely ignored these crimes, and concluded that my son Tyler James, "CAUSED HIS OWN DEATH".
It's hard to believe that such an Injustice could happen in America. For over ten years now I have been pleading with the Media to investigate the way my son's death was handled. I am at a loss for words as to why the Media has failed to take an interest or even request to "VIEW THE EVIDENCE" that supports my allegations.
For 10 years now I have been expected to believe that my son Tyler, "CAUSED HIS OWN DEATH". I refuse to accept that a 7 year-old is capable of, "causing his own death". When you take a look at the facts and evidence surrounding the death of Tyler James, it is clear that Tyler was not JUST a victim of 2 Felony crimes, he was also a victim of some very serious "ABUSE OF POWER", and CLEARLY DID NOT DESERVE TO BE BLAMED!
It is TRULY a sad day in America when a police agency we trust to uphold the law and protect the innocent can perpetrate such an injustice against an innocent child. I hope one day soon to be able to present my evidence to the American people through a reputable Media organization or Journalist. Please forward this to everyone you know. MY QUESTION TO YOU IS ????
WOULD YOU GIVE UP ON JUSTICE
IF IT WERE YOUR CHILD?
