Halo 3 and Ghostbusters, despite being released years apart, have one thing in common. Both games were heavily scrutinized, criticized, and embarrassed by the media and gamers alike for running at sub-HD resolution. The lowest screen resolution that is accepted as High Definition is 720p, though 1080p is considered True HD by Sony and other various companies. And though these titles were attacked for not running at HD resolution (Halo 3 on the 360, and Ghostbusters on the PS3), developers actually run their games at sub-HD resolution all the time.Halo 3 and Ghostbusters, despite being released years apart, have one thing in common.... more

Another online virtual world?
>
Home, PlayStation 3's long-delayed online 3-D social networking service, will debut Thursday.
Sony (NYSE: SNE) on Wednesday said it would launch its online 3-D social networking service, Home, Dec. 11, ending months of delay in the long-awaited service for users of the company's PlayStation 3 video-game console.
Home is similar to Linden Lab's Second Life in that it lets people create virtual characters, or avatars, to interact in cyberspace. PlayStation 3 users will be able to join the virtual world through a free software download.
Home is the latest online service for the PS3. Sony recently added video downloads to the PlayStation Network, which, according to the company, has 15 million subscribers worldwide. Nevertheless, Sony is seen as behind rival Microsoft, which makes the Xbox 360, in launching online gaming and video-download services.
In addition, Nintendo, which launched its Wii video-game console the same month as Sony launched PS 3, November 2006, has outsold Sony more than 2-to-1. Nintendo has sold 34.5 million units worldwide, compared with Sony's 16.8 million units.
Sony is hoping Home will help take its struggling video games unit to profitability. The unit has lost about $3.8 billion over the last two years, according to BusinessWeek magazine.
While PS3 users will enter Home for free, Sony hopes to make money by charging companies to interact with participants. The first companies to join Home include clothing designer Diesel, furniture designer Ligne Roset, energy drink maker Red Bull, film studio Paramount Pictures, and video content providers Hexus TV and Eurogamer.
Besides offering mini-games, videos, and special events, Home will make it possible for users to create their own social networks and set up meetings in their own virtual apartments or in public gatherings. Home will offer instant messaging, voice, and video communications.
Sony first announced Home in March 2007, saying it would launch the service later that year. The company announced the first delay in October 2007, and again in April 2008. Sony launched a trial of the service to a limited number of PS3 users in August.Another online virtual world?

The Microsoft press conference at E3 2008 saw a game demo of Capcom's Resident Evil 5, after which Jun Takeuchi announced the release date for the eagerly anticipated title. Resident Evil 5 will be launching worldwide on Friday, March 13th 2009, except for Japan who get it a day earlier. Friday the 13th? Really? How many months do you think they pushed it back just to get that special, more-evil Friday the 13th release?

Does your Xbox 360 hard drive just have too much free space on it? How about installing some of your games directly to the drive?
At a small media briefing immediately following their E3 press conference Monday, Microsoft execs said that one of the new features of their new Xbox 360 user interface would be the ability to install any Xbox 360 disc-based game to your console's hard drive. This would result in faster loading times and cooler systems, Microsoft said, because the game disc won't have to be constantly spinning.
However, users will still have to have the game disc in their Xbox 360 if they want to run the game.
The games will be displayed in the console's new "Games" channel, shown above. The update will be released this fall.
Microsoft just announced at E3 that they'll be giving the Xbox 360 a total software overhaul this fall. "When people turn on their Xbox 360s this fall, they'll get an entirely new interface and Dashboard, an entirely new Xbox through the magic of software," said John Schappert, head of Live services. New features will include those fancy new Mii-like 3D Avatars, a new emphasis on community with IM, video chat, and photo sharing, along with a brand new 3D slide interface for the main Dashboard screen. Avatars will be integrated into your GamerCard, but you can also create a "Live party" and invite your friends, with as many as 8 of your three dimensional homies hanging out at once -- though you're not hanging out in an actual 3D environment. You can use your avatar in certain Live Arcade games like Uno, and even in third party titles such as the upcoming Scene It? title. It sounds like Microsoft is taking cues from the Wii, Sony's Home and Facebook all in one fell swoop, not bad at all.http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/microsoft-says.html
