"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is feeling the heat from his liberal colleagues to include a government-run health insurance plan, or "public option," in the Senate health care bill.
Now, as Reid and other negotiators move closer to unveiling their health care plan, liberal advocacy groups are ratcheting up the pressure, saying they will run Reid out of Washington if he does not bring a public option to the Senate floor."
I personally think that we will be getting a public option, or Medicare for everyone. It's too important and without it even bring up health care reform would have been for nothing. No one is that stupid, lest of all Obama. But Harry Reid really does need to watch his political back here. He has really angered a lot of progressives with is handling of this issues and many others. He may be a good legislator but he repeatedly fails as a leader of the Senate."Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is feeling the heat from his liberal... more

Back in 2002 the blogosphere was hardly something that attracted attention. That spring, MyDD, Daily Kos, and Atrios launched. They were all small ventures to begin with, had few if any staffers, and operated on shoe string budgets. Today they're part of the media landscape. Eric Boehlert, in his new book, Bloggers on the Bus, looks at the rise of the blogoshpere, the 2008 election, and the impact blogs have had on traditional media and American politics.
What will become of them now that they've gone from blogging on the bus to Washington and the White House? Boehlert is a Senior Fellow at Media Matters.Back in 2002 the blogosphere was hardly something that attracted attention. That... more

(CNN)— Former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is moving forward with plans for his own rally during the Republican National Convention —and is moving his location to a larger arena to accommodate the unprecedented response.
The three day event called ‘Rally for the Republic’ will officially launch Paul’s new political action group: the ‘Campaign for Liberty.’ When planning for the event began earlier this year, it was originally scheduled to take place at the University of Minnesota, but due to a “strong initial response,” it was moved to The Target in Minneapolis, which can house up to 18,000 people.
"The Rally for the Republic will send a powerful, positive message to the Republican Party that there is an army of grassroots activists across the country ready to work with them if steer back to their traditions of limited government and personal liberty," said Campaign for Liberty spokesman Jesse Benton.
Paul, who has often voiced his differing policy views from presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, has made it clear in past interviews with CNN his supporters won’t be in Minneapolis to interfere or cause problems for the Republican Party.
“We’re not going to disrupt them,” Paul told CNN last month. “We’re not going to demonstrate as much as present a positive case for values that we believe should be the Republican values.”
From August 31 through September 1, the former presidential dark horse will hold a series of grassroots leadership and training events culminating with a “celebration of traditional Republican values,” where Grover Norquist, Tucker Carlson, Gov. Gary Johnson, Barry Goldwater Jr. and Bruce Fein are expected to speak.(CNN)— Former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is moving forward with... more

A confidential "Interim Report of the Special Investigative Committee of the Joint Boards of Shriners Hospitals for Children" describes how immediate past potentate Bernard Lemieux appointed a committee to investigate the conduct of Shriner leaders, Ralph Semb, Chairman of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Board of Trustees and Gene Bracewell, Imperial Treasurer Shriners International Imperial Divan. The report was leaked online at Wikileaks.com and can be found here.
The April 10, 2008 document describes how Lemieux appointed committee members on September 20, 2007 to "inquire whether Semb and Bracewell engaged in unethical conduct by intervening in the executive evaluation process (the so called 360 degree review) of Edgar McGonigal, Director of Development of SHC during the year 2007."
It is believed that this is the first time that an Imperial Potentate has appointed such a committee to investigate allegations that top Shriner leaders behaved unethically.
The report reveals how Semb and Bracewell pushed hard for continued contracts with one specific fund-raising company, Vantage Direct Marketing Services. Vantage raised over $46 million between 1999 and 2003 on behalf of SHC with only $2.5 million going to the hospitals.
In other words, if someone donated $100 during these campaigns, $95 was kept by Vantage with only $5 going to the hospitals.
Bracewell admitted to committee and board members that he got at least one free trip from Vantage in 2007.
The report suggests that Semb retaliated against McGonigal, who opposed Vantage contracts, by unilaterally firing him on October 31, 2006 without first consulting the joint boards or HR.
The report suggests that both Semb and Bracewell were attempting to accomplish their purpose by using subterfuge rather than by directly making their views known by "compromising the 360 degree review process in an unprecedented way." The committee reported that Semb and Bracewell contacted confidential employment reviewers in an effort to further retaliate against McGonigal by having him removed for poor job performance. This was done after executive vice president James Full allegedly violated employment confidentiality to "in part, avoid a confrontation with Mr. Semb." Last year it was about the candidates. This year it's the climate.
Former Vice President Al Gore made a surprise appearance Saturday at the Netroots Nation conference, a gathering of nearly 2,000 left-leaning bloggers and political organizers. He urged the activists to mobilize for global climate protection by amplifying his call to generate all the nation's electricity from renewable sources like wind, solar and geothermal in 10 years.
At last year's conference, formerly called YearlyKos, seven Democratic presidential candidates — including Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, now the presumptive nominee — vied for the support of the bloggers, whose political influence has grown exponentially since they emerged as a significant factor in presidential politics during former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's White House campaign five years ago.
Having locked up the Democratic nomination, Obama skipped this year's conference, but his deputy campaign manager, Steve Hildebrand, talked about the campaign's strategy to portray Obama as the leader of a new political movement rather than a traditional candidate.
Gore, who joined Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during her session at the convention, praised the bloggers as being at the forefront of reclaiming American democracy.
"Thank you for the movement that you have created," Gore said. "I can't tell you how important I think it is that you continue what you are doing."
Much of Pelosi's time at the convention was spent speaking out for an end to the war and for Obama's election.
"The end could be in sight," she said to cheers. "This will not happen without the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States."
Gore said the seriousness of the climate problem is related to the economic and security crises of U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
Recent Republican calls to battle rising oil prices with more drilling are "absurd" and a bit like curing a hangover with another drink, he said.Last year it was about the candidates. This year it's the climate.
