A heated exchange took place during NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when MSNBC host Rachel Maddow accused Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) of hypocrisy for railing against a spending bill in public while touting its benefits in his home district.
Appearing alongside each other during a panel session, Maddow pivoted from a discussion on job creation to note that Schock had appeared at an event on Friday touting a grant program that he had voted against.
"You, in your district, I just read that you were at a community college touting a $350,000 green technology education program, talking about how great that was going to be for your district," she said. "You voted against the bill that created that grant. That's happening a lot with Republicans sort of taking credit for things that Democratic bills do and then Republicans simultaneously touting their votes against them and trashing them. That, I think, is a problem that needs to be resolved within your caucus. Because you seem like a very nice person but that is a very hypocritical stance to take."
A somewhat taken-aback Schock insisted that Republicans were "not consulted on the stimulus bill" and shouldn't be blamed for the lack of a bipartisan vote for its passage. This didn't really get to Maddow's point. So after some back-and-forth among the other panelists, Schock jumped back in.
"If you vote against the omnibus bill," she said at the end of the exchange, "if you complain about the omnibus bill, if you tout your vote against the omnibus bill, it is hypocrisy to then go to your district and go to a ribbon cutting ceremony for something that is funded by the omnibus bill that you voted against."

Dan Viesnik
Humanitarian and anti-nuclear campaigner prepares for Highbury Corner Magistrates Court.
30.01.2010
Following a long line of Peace Activists, Dan is intent on making his mark in the growing history of individuals who believe every human has the right to freedom of life without fear and a Nuclear Free home planet where corporate greed and fear-mongering will not reign supreme.
The thing I like about this guy is he just gets on and goes for what he believes.. and I guess at some point in our lives the excuses for in-action simply run dry.
A guy asked me the other day 'Why do you do what you do - What difference will it make?'
(and I'm certainly not the first to be asked that one!)
All I know is if we don't listen to the beat of our hearts or pretend our nature is other than it is to fit with an outside view of ourselves, life eventually becomes a façade - you can't please everyone & in all likelihood 'everyone' wont give a shit either way... so be true to yourself.
We may make a difference, we may not - but here's a question: has anyone heard of climate change, Mandela, Gravity?
On ya Dan - I'm sure if anyone could meditate their way through jail, and make friends while they're at it, it'll be you.

please note: there are many ways to be involved in peace campaigns - spending time in cells is not for that exciting and may cause damage to your health & paperwork.
We dont all need to be martyrs, but we do need to take part in this life!

The world's oldest profession may have been subsidized by the US government during the war on terror.
"Two former employees of Blackwater Worldwide have accused the private security contractor of defrauding the government for years with phony billing, including charging for a prostitute, alcohol and spa trips," Carol D. Leonnig reports for the Washington Post.
The article continues, "In newly unsealed court records, a husband and wife who once worked for Blackwater said they had personal knowledge of the company falsifying invoices, double-billing federal agencies and charging the government for personal and inappropriate items whose real purpose was hidden. They said they witnessed 'systematic' fraud on the company's security contracts with the Department of State in Iraq and Afghanistan, and with the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina."

On the heels of a Washington Times report detailing how Republicans have railed publicly against the stimulus package while working privately to direct stimulus funds towards their home states and districts, Rachel Maddow has compiled her own list of GOP senators and congressmen guilty of such double-dealing.
Maddow argues that this is yet more evidence that the GOP is uninterested in productive policy and only concerned with tearing down the Obama administration.

President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser said Sunday that lawmakers and others are using national security to score political points and defended the handling of the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a U.S. airliner.
Deputy national security adviser John Brennan complained that politicians, many of them Republicans, were unfairly criticizing the administration for partisan purposes and second-guessing the case with a "500-mile screwdriver" that reaches from Washington to the scene of the abortive attack in Detroit.

Democratic operative John Podesta on Sunday offered one of the most stinging rebukes yet of Republican claims that law enforcement agents mishandled their investigation of the Christmas Day bomb plot.
Podesta, the former White House chief of staff in the Clinton administration called it "unconscionable" for GOP leaders to "attack the FBI for their conduct" in the underwear bomber case. Podesta's comments appeared to be in refernce to remarks made recently by Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) who declared that CNN softball interviewer Larry King would have done a "better" job interrogating Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.

Last night, Oliver North, the retired U.S. Marine Corps officer-turned-Fox News contributor, appeared on Hannity's America to condemn the administration's decision to overturn "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." North characterized Obama's support for the repeal as a "stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world" and suggested that allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to serve openly was the tantamount to letting pedophiles into the military:

With the Supreme Court Justices sitting right in front of him, President Barack Obama unloaded in his State of the Union address on this past week’s ruling qualifying corporations as having the rights of citizens and opening the “floodgates” to their political donations.
“Last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests – including foreign corporations – to spend without limit in our elections,” Obama said. “Well I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests, or worse, by foreign entities. They should be decided by the American people, and that’s why I’m urging Democrats and Republicans to pass a bill that helps to right this wrong.”

Federal agents have started interviewing people connected to Sen. John Ensign's (R-Nev.) sex scandal, a potential sign that the Nevada Republican could face a criminal probe over the matter, according to several sources familiar with the matter.
The FBI has contacted former aides to Ensign - in both Las Vegas and in Washington, the sources said. The sources said it appears that the FBI has begun a preliminary review of the case, and there's no evidence yet that it will become a full-fledged criminal investigation into the senator's conduct. At the same time, the Senate Ethics Committee has already launched an inquiry, issuing subpoenas last month to a slew of former Ensign aides.

The Democratic National Committee is calling a leading Republican lawmaker "shameful" for raising money off the botched terrorist attack on Christmas Day.
Hours after Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich), the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee and a Michigan gubernatorial candidate, sent out an email solicitation bashing "weak-kneed liberals" for their response to an attempted attack on a Detroit-bound airliner, the DNC went to work.

A growing chorus of Republican officials is pledging to push for a full repeal of health care reform legislation, weeks before a bill actually lands on the president's desk for signing.
In an email to the Huffington Post, Alex Conant, a former RNC press secretary and an adviser to possible 2012 candidate Tim Pawlenty, said that while Republicans will push their own health care reform agenda in upcoming elections, they also plan to run on a promise to nullify what Democrats are poised to pass.
"Republicans see last week's health care vote as a top issue in the 2010 campaign," wrote Conant. "As for the repeal, Republicans have a truck full of ideas on how to expand access, improve quality, and lower costs. I'm sure there will be some focus on repealing provisions of the Democrats' plan, but the most pressing issue will likely be addressing health care costs and lowering the financial toll this bill will have on taxpayers. Republicans will certainly campaign on repealing $500 billion of tax increases for a bloated government-run health care."
