~y2009m8d19-Watch-what-you-feed-your-dog--corn-and-wheat-gluten-can-be-problematic
While I am aware this isn't 'breaking news', It's something I recently became aware of due to our own dogs' allergies. A good quick read for those of us with dogs.
(edit - I just noticed the link isn't coming through on current properly. i do not know why. If it is copied and pasted into the browser, it does work.)
________
'Dogs may not have the same limitations as a cat in terms of digestion, but they can't digest corn any more easily than cats. Thus, a dog food with corn as a primary ingredient is nearly worthless, nutritionally.
Cats are snack eaters: they eat when they're hungry, and will eat several times in a day, only ingesting small amounts of food each time. In contrast, dogs are meal eaters: they normally eat one or two larger meals per day, often very quickly. "Dainty" is not in their vocabulary when it comes to eating, because dogs instinctively know that if they don't eat quickly, someone else will take their food. So they "wolf" it down (giving us a very attractive verbal representation at Thanksgiving with the family while we're dodging rolls and cranberries). This is due to, again, the ancestry of the animals - cats have smaller stomachs, catch smaller prey, and thus need to eat smaller amounts more frequently. Dogs have larger stomachs and catch larger prey, and can "afford" to only eat once or twice per day. Dogs have a very slightly slower metabolism than cats, and they aren't quite as adept at processing complex proteins, which means they have more time to absorb nutrients in their food. This very slight difference gives them an advantage over cats in the diversity of the food they can eat, but requires that we, as their caretakers, make sure that they're getting plenty of the nutrients they need in the food we give them.
There are foods on the market today which show photos of corn and wheat next to cubes of beef on the bag (Beneful is one of these), and when you see the commercials and these photos on the bags, it's very tempting to buy the food, assuming that everything your dog needs will be well-represented. After all, companies like Purina make a living off of telling us that they know what's best for animals.
While I won't outright accuse a company of lying, I will say that their advertising and advice are very misleading. A quick look at the first ten ingredients of Beneful's "Original" formula reveal something slightly disturbing:
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol
Y'all, your dogs shouldn't be eating that much corn every day. YOU shouldn't even be eating that much corn every day. The "real beef" that's advertised isn't listed in the first five ingredients. And what's this: sugar? In dog food? Not necessary, and actually pretty harmful. "Chicken by-product meal" is code for "leftovers from processing chicken nuggets", and having animal fat (what, you can't tell us what animal it's from?) as an ingredient that high on the list actually ensures that your dog will have LESS energy when it's included with that many other carbohydrates. Sorbitol, by the way, is another form of sugar - it's a sugar alcohol that takes a long time to digest, keeping the blood sugar of the animal that's ingested it high for extended periods. What you can expect from feeding your dog a food like this for extended periods of time: lethargy, bouts of diarrhea and/or constipation, increased thirst, weight gain, and possible bouts of vomiting. With that much sugar, the risk of your dog becoming a diabetic is a serious concern, too.'
