Labour MP and new media adviser Tom Harris has resigned after he created a video using a clip from the film Downfall to mock Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond.
The clip – already widely used as an internet meme – shows Adolf Hitler ranting at senior Nazis in his Berlin bunker during the final days of the Third Reich.
Called Joan’s Downfall, Harris’s version of the clip features subtitles that take a swipe at Salmond for his secrecy over the referendum on Scottish Independence as well as his refusal to sack parliamentary aide Joan McAlpine, who last week suggested that parties opposing the SNP are anti-Scottish.
Harris resigned from his role as new media adviser on Sunday following talks with Johann Lamont, Labour’s leader in Scotland.
Commenting on the coverage the video has been the subject of since it was published on Saturday, Harris said: “The video I posted has been a well-worn joke used to parody a range of public figures.”
“However, context is everything and in the context of Joan McAlpine’s statements about all political opponents of the SNP being anti-Scottish, my actions have been an unhelpful distraction for which I apologise.”

The Scottish National Party has won a majority of the seat in the Scottish Parliament.
Despite a 50% turnout, the SNP secured 65 seats in Holyrood, an increase of 27 seats in the previous assembly election while other parties saw a slump. This will now be a step closer for the party's ambition to have a referendum on whetever Scotland will become an independant country. In the previous election in 2007, the Scottish parliament was a minority after partys failed to reach the goal.

Would it help or obstruct politics in the UK?
Who would make best PM, Home Sec, Treasury, Foreign Office etc ministers in a Hung Parliament?
Today when the SNP released its election manifesto, First Minister Alex Salmond stated to voters that for Scotland “The prospect of a balanced parliament has now become increasingly likely. The thought causes panic in the Labour and Tory ranks.".
This comment plays with recent remarks by the other two parties, who are against the prospect of a hung parliament. (no real strong stance on what the lib dems think of a hung parliament)
"A hung parliament would be a bunch of politicians haggling, not deciding.
They would be fighting for their own interests, not fighting for your interests."- Cameron comment found on BBC.
"Second, a hung parliament may seem attractive to some but it may give disproportionate power to a small party holding the balance of power and bring its own danger."-Peter Mandelson's campaign memo on politics home.Would it help or obstruct politics in the UK?

The SNP won a stunning victory in Glasgow East last night to join the likes of Govan and Hamilton in reshaping modern Scottish history.
The result hugely surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic of nationalists, as local councillor John Mason overturned a Labour majority of more than 13,500 to claim the seat for his party by a comfortable majority.
The SNP pointed out that the 24% swing came close to the shift required to take every Labour seat in Scotland.
