A young girl alerted a neighbor after finding her parents shot Wednesday in the Portland area's sixth suspected murder-suicide in a one-month span.
The child told Steve Grice her parents were on the floor and not moving, investigators said. Grice said he didn't believe the girl initially.
"It was bizarre. I mean, she just said, 'Yeah, mom and dad were shot,' and I thought she was joking," said Grice, who said he had just walked outside to pick up the mail. "And then when I saw the police show up … and it blew me away. She said it without any emotion."
Vancouver police identified the pair as 37-year-old Kyle Epley and 32-year-old Erin Epley.
Officers said another neighbor went to the house and found the Epleys in a pool of blood and called 911 at about 2 p.m. The pair had died of apparent gunshot wounds, investigators said.
"I started to really feel bad because I could have, you know, helped her," Grice said.
Police called for immediate medical assistance after they showed up at the house on Southeast 30th Way. They found what could be the weapon and have since ruled the crime a murder-suicide. The shooter has not been identified.
Officers have not commented on the relationship between the man and woman, but neighbors said the couple had recently separated. They also said the woman attended nursing school and the man recently had his hours cut at work.
Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday.
In the six recent murder-suicides in the Portland area, 15 people have died in the series of killings.

Police say a Boston man posted a death announcement on his family Web site before fatally shooting his wife and himself.
Burdened by debt and facing eviction, a self-employed Boston computer consultant killed his wife and then shot himself Sunday night - but not before leaving a chilling posting on his Internet website announcing their deaths, according to the posting, Boston police, and court records.
Christian Mogensen, 61, was inside the couple's 20th-floor apartment in Charles River Park when he shot and killed his wife of almost 12 years, 60-year-old Sharon Glassman, with a single gunshot around 9:30 p.m., authorities said. He shot himself a short time afterward, police said.

"Spam King" Edward Davidson, who recently disappeared from the Colorado minimum security facility where he was serving 21 months for tax evasion and e-mail fraud, was found dead yesterday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Davidson ran a company called Power Promoters from 2002 to 2007 that, among other things, promoted penny stock companies by sending out thousands of spam e-mails with falsified headers. When he was indicted in June 2007, the IRS reported that Davidson had collected over $3.5 million without paying taxes.
In May, Davidson reported to Florence Federal Correctional Complex, a federal work camp outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, to serve his sentence. He escaped custody on Sunday, and was being tracked by the IRS, FBI, and US Marshals.
Responding to a report of gunfire in the small town of Bennet, Colorado on Thursday morning, local deputies found Davidson, his 29 year-old wife, Amy Lee Ann Hill, and their 3 year-old daughter dead from gunshot wounds in and around a parked SUV.
An infant boy was found unharmed in a carseat in the back of the SUV, and a female teenage witness was shot in the neck, currently reported to be in the University of Colorado Hospital in serious condition.
