The USS New York is a new Navy ship with a bow constructed out of steel from the World Trade Center. Today it made its way up the Hudson to pass by the site of the September 11th attacks. Rescue workers and and families of 9/11 victims were among those gathered to greet the new ship.
USS New York Honors 9/11 (Video)
From the AP:
Of the 361 sailors serving aboard the ship, around 13 percent are from New York state, which is higher than would normally be the case, Murphy said. There were many requests from Navy personnel to serve on the ship, which will carry some 250 Marines.

Earlier this week I was engaged in a debate about 9/11 conspiracy theories that grew out of a video someone had posted about mysterious deaths linked 9/11. It is a subject I have spent a great deal of time researching and here is some of what I've found out.
The attacks of September 11 isn't the fault of Bush, Clinton or Reagan nor are they the fault of democrats or Republicans. Because they all share the blame. It is the fault of a duplicitous foreign policy that employs the worst kinds of crimes and abuses in pursuit of the loftiest of aims. That is why one of Bush's first post 9/11 moves was to grant amnesty to himself and past presidents who may have been found to have complicity in the attacks. While we don't have any direct hand in this crime our government s hands are far from clean when it comes to providing motive and opportunity to those that did.
Follow this link to finish the story because I had some trouble posting the whole thing

Interesting question here: which would have been worse for America, a second 9/11 or the eight years of Bush and Cheney finally drawing to a close?
Also - do you think Bush and Cheney should hang for their crimes?Interesting question here: which would have been worse for America, a second 9/11 or... more

As a participant in the Rotary Exchange Program, this makes me really sad. Its a shame that kids wont get to experience what I did because of xenophobic paranoia. I plan to write to my congressmen about easing these restrictions - please help out and do the same.As a participant in the Rotary Exchange Program, this makes me really sad. Its a shame... more

Mark Bingham was an openly Gay American.
On September 11, 2001, when Mark Bingham, boarded United Airlines Flight 93 in Newark, NJ, little did he know that United Airlines Flight 93 would be one of four planes hijacked as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Nor did it ever cross Marks mind that he would become a hero that day, even though throughout his life he had always been a heroic man.
We are positive he never thought he would save a future presidential hopefuls life.
But when Todd Beamer finished reading the 23rd psalm and uttered the now famous phrase “let’s roll”, Mark stood up from his seat and was there to be counted among the hero’s that day. He was among those who stormed the cockpit of United Airlines Flight 93 and prevented the hijackers from using the plane to crash into the Capital Building and kill perhaps even thousands more additional victims.
But on United Airlines Flight 93 on September the 11th 2001 there were no Gays, there were no straights, there were only Americans…
Speaking before a crowd of 500 people who gathered at the University of California at Berkeley for the memorial service for Mark Bingham, Senator John McCain, who supports California Prop. 8, voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation, voted NO on adding sexual orientation to definition of hate crimes and voted NO on expanding hate crimes to include sexual orientation, praised Mark's heroic sacrifice saying,
"It is now believed that the terrorists on Flight 93 intended to crash the airplane into the United States Capitol where I work, the great house of democracy where I was that day… It is very possible that I would have been in the building, with a great many other people…
I may very well owe my life to Mark and the others who summoned the enormous courage and love necessary to deny those depraved, hateful men their terrible triumph.
Such a debt you incur for life.”

"Al-Qaeda can be defeated if the US relies less on force and more on intelligence and policing to find its leaders, a leading US think-tank says.
In a new report, the Rand Corporation suggests the US replace the term "war on terror" with "counter-terrorism".
Al-Qaeda is blamed for the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US and other attacks around the world.
Many analysts believe Osama Bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders are hiding near the Afghan-Pakistan border.
Earlier this month, US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said the situation in Afghanistan was "precarious and urgent" and the country should be the main focus of the "war on terror".
Pakistan, a key US ally in the fight against al-Qaeda, is under increasing pressure to do more to combat militants in its lawless border areas.
"Terrorists should be perceived and described as criminals, not holy warriors and our analysis suggests that there is no battlefield solution to terrorism," said Seth Jones, political scientist and lead author of the study.
"The United States has the necessary instruments to defeat al-Qaeda, it just needs to shift its strategy.""
What do you think? "Al-Qaeda can be defeated if the US relies less on force and more on intelligence... more
