I don't really use Facebook but plenty of my friends do. They might be interested to know that the social network giant growth appears to be powered by coal, the number 1 cause of climate change. In late January, Facebook announced that its new Oregon data center, the data center farms that create the cloud that brings your friends' updates to your computer or smart phone, will be powered by a coal plant in Idaho.
But why would Facebook choose to site their new center at a place powered by coal over another place in renewable energy-rich Oregon? Look no farther than cost.
Data center power use of the last decade is astounding. In 2000, data centers comprised 0.8 percent of total US electrical consumption, but just 5 years later, data centers' power consumption grew to 1.4 percent of the total energy use in the country, according to the Energy Information Administration.
The Pineville-based data center will be powered by an outside-air intake system, which will cool the massive data servers at a lower carbon footprint. There are several new technologies that companies can use like this to lower their impact, but step 1 must be siting data centers in places where the grid has a higher mix of renewable energy. Companies like Facebook can use their spending power to influence government policy over new clean energy capacity.I don't really use Facebook but plenty of my friends do. Two days after Scrabulous went to Facebook heaven comes Wordscraper, a new application from Jayant and Rajat Agarwalla, the Indian brothers who were forced to shut down their popular Facebook application. With a few nips here and few tucks there, they have been able to tweak the venerable Scrabble game enough to make it no longer a copyright infringement (so far, at least). There are new rules and a different look that should protect them from more litigation. The differences are mostly cosmetic with round tiles replacing squares and triple/double word/letter boxes placed differently. In addition, there are quadruple squares. OK, so if we fried up some chicken and seasoned it with 8 herbs and spices (instead of 7), served it in a takeout "basket', used a General as its spokesperson, and called it TFC (Tennessee Fried Chicken), would we be safe from being sued? Two days after Scrabulous went to Facebook heaven comes Wordscraper, a new application... more

My usual routine consists of waking up, turning on Facebook, and then going straight to Scrabulous (my vice of choice since kicking my crack addiction last Fall). I've logged in almost 1000 games (losing fewer than 200, I may add). To my astonishment I found this message:
Scrabulous is disabled for US and Canadian users until further notice. If you would like to stay informed about developments in this matter, please click here.
Hasbro, the board game giant has finally played its last word and it was a triple letter/triple word score combination, the equivalent of a Michelle Kwan-routine in the world of bold board game moves. For months there were murmurs that Scrabulous' days were numbered. Thank you Scrabulous for providing hours of procrastination. We will miss you.
