A man accused of brutally beating a transgender woman to death told his girlfriend in a phone call from prison that he "snapped" and that “gay things need to die.”
Allen Andrade, 31, was charged with the murder of transgender woman Angie Zapata, 18, who was found dead in her apartment on July 17 2008. Andrade had told investigators that he had met Zapata on a social networking site and that the two met with the intention of having a sexual relationship. Apparently, Zapata performed oral sex on Andrade but refused to let him touch her. When Andrade was left alone in Zapata's apartment, he found several photographs that made him question Zapata's sex. When he confronted her, she told him "I am all woman." Andrade then grabbed Zapata's crotch area, felt male genitalia and became angry. He proceeded to take a fire extinguisher off a shelf and struck Zapata twice in the head, telling investigators he thought he "killed it."
In the phone calls from prison, Andrade expressed that he was out of control, outside himself and not a coherent person the day of the murder. The calls were also laden with derogatory remarks towards homosexuals, and he stated that people in jail are scared of him because of his reputation for wielding a fire extinguisher, which is the suspected murder weapon. When Andrade’s girlfriend said her cell phone was dying during a call, he said that was gay and that gay things need to die.

A Thai school has created toilets for its transgender students with a sign that's half male, half female - with the words "Transvestite Toilet" printed underneath.
The Kamphaeng School in Si Sa Ket, in northeastern Thailand opened separate toilet facilities to accommodate hundreds of transgender students.
Headteacher, Sitisak Sumontha, estimates that in any year, between 10% and 20% of his boys consider themselves to be transgender - boys who would rather be girls.
"These students want to be able to go in peace without fear of being watched, laughed at or groped," he said.
"They used to be teased every time they used the boys' toilets so they started using the girls' toilets instead. But that made the girls feel uncomfortable. It made these boys unhappy, and started to affect their work.
"They(girls) don't have problems with transvestites but going to the same private area, like a toilet, makes them uneasy," he said.
"The transvestite kids may behave even more effeminately than the girls do, but their anatomy is still like that of a boy."
Student Tanisorn Khantivong, aged 17, said: "It was inconvenient when we didn't have our own toilet.
"Then we had to use both male and female toilets when there were no people in them. It was a bit uncomfortable."
Mr Sumontha said the students were no longer allowed to use female toilets but could still use the male toilets if they wanted to.
Predominantly Buddhist Thailand is relatively tolerant of homosexuality and Bangkok is a global centre for sex-change surgery.
A technical college in Chiang Mai province set up a similar facility for its students in 2003, using a pink lotus as the logo.
