Monday, January 12, 2009 started out as a typical morning. I awoke around 6 am, still groggy from staying up late the night before. I quickly freshened up, got dressed and was off to work. I made it to work with about 10 minutes to spare. I swiped in, put away my coat and proceeded to get my free coffee that is provided for us on Monday's. By this time it's about 7:30 and time to get started. I work a few accounts while flip flopping between my PC and my cellphone (gotta poke back on Facebook). Then a email is sent " Department meeting at 12:30" I accept and continue working. One of the supervisors comes around to see who needs to adjust their lunch schedule. I told her that I would need to adjust my time. As I am working another email pops up " Specialist report to conference room at 9:30". After that brief meeting I walk back to my cubicle and I noticed that my supervisor wasn't around. The admin assistant said she was fired, and the meeting was to get us away from our desk so that we would not witness it. At 11:15 I went to lunch for an hour. While I am working another email pops up, this time it's addressed to certain people. I glance over the names, I see the name of one of the "perfect" employees. I thought to myself it can not be bad if she is included, it must be about SAP training or something. Fast forward...We arrive at the meeting, and the words that so many people are hearing nowadays begin to utter. " Due to the current economic situation we have been forced to make a very tough business decision to downsize etc etc etc. After nine years on the job, the job is no more.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today ordered his administration to lay off thousands of part-time state workers and to work with the state controller to temporarily slash the pay of most full-time employees to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour.
About 10,300 part-time employees will receive pink slips starting today, the governor's aides said.
Schwarzenegger says a 2003 State Supreme Court decision requires the pay cuts for most of the 200,000 full-time state employees in the absence of a budget. He wants the cuts to take effect immediately; they would show up in pay checks at the end of August.
