A TODDLER choked to death in front of his horrified family after a lollipop came off its stick and became wedged in his throat. Little Francis Dean, two, started struggling for breath after being given the lolly as a treat for eating his dinner.
His brother Michael, 13, took hold of the stick but it suddenly came away in his hand — leaving Francis gasping for air. Family and friends frantically tried to save the youngster but he died before reaching hospital.
Last night his anguished parents David and Dawn warned other parents to be extra careful with lollipops. And they urged manufacturers Swizzels Matlow to make the warnings on sweets clearer.
The sweet was part of Swizzels Matlow's 'lots of lollies' pack which carries a warning saying, 'Lollipops are a potential choking hazard. Not suitable for children under 36 months'. But the cellophane wrapper on the actual lollipop does not carry any warning.
Dawn, of Newton Heath, Manchester, added: "Kids love sweets and lollipops and this could have been any sweet given to any child. We would urge the manufacturers to put warnings on each individual lolly or to make them smaller. I'd just say to other parents, you can never be too cautious. We would never have thought this could harm our child."
"We had two-and-a-half wonderful years with him. He was full of life. He loved playing with his toys, his Power Rangers and cars. He liked football and had his own little cricket set to play with his brother. They were very close - he was close to all his family."
"He was a very, very happy chap. He loved nursery and had some wonderful friends who are devastated. We want to thank everyone, all our lovely friends and family and neighbours, for their comforting words and everything they've done for him and us."
A spokesman for Swizzels Matlow said: "All at Swizzels Matlow were devastated to hear of the tragic death of this baby boy. Most of us are parents and we can only imagine the pain and anguish that the little boy's parents are facing."
"As soon as we are furnished with more details we will mount a full investigation."

Smokey Hormel is an absolute delight. No, I’m not referring to the meat company and its infamous product SPAM—even though Smokey is the grandson of its inventor. A true musical journeyman, Smokey Hormel has contributed the work of his fingers and mind to a mish mash of musicians from Tom Waits to Beck, Johnny Cash to Justin Timberlake—Smokey has even made multiple contributions to film and television, most notably Nickelodeon’s, The Backyardigans, and the recent Chuck Palahniuk book-turned-movie, Choke...Smokey Hormel is an absolute delight. When Sam Rockwell walks into the room and shakes my hand, he looks distractingly like Eric Knox, his nouveau-riche hipster software mogul/villain from the tragically underrated Charlie's Angels. He's also easily distracted by the assorted bric-a-brac on the conference table -- my tape recorder, a bowl of candy, mini-sodas, etc. -- but despite our mutual distractions, we soon get down to business to discuss Choke, the new film adaptation of Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk's book, that's been picking up good buzz since its debut at Sundance in January. (Rockwell sat near me at the premiere, heavily disguised in a preposterous wig.)
Those who hold Palahniuk's work to be generational holy writ will breathe easy to know that Choke follows the material faithfully, telling the story of Victor Mancini, a Gen-X wastoid who spends his days working an absurd job as a historical actor at a colonial village and his nights perpetrating a scam in which he intentionally chokes on food at fancy restaurants. Oh, and he may or may not be Jesus Christ, reincarnated.

With 'Choke' set to hit cinemas within a month, Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk has apparently let slip that another of his cult novels is to be made into a screenplay.
Lullaby is a typically twisted Palahniuk story, about a supernatural poem that if people listen to, or even think about, die. Lovely story I'm sure.
There seems to be a lot of rumours flying around about the writer at the moment, recently he apparently said Radiohead were doing the score for one of his films, which they then denied, as well as various gossips about even more big screen adaptations.
I say keep the rumours coming Chuck, if it's you that's starting them...

Radiohead have quashed the rumours that they are writing the score for Chuck Palahniuk's new film, Choke.
There has been much anticipation about the new film from Fight Club author, and that only grew after Palahniuk told BBC 6 Music that Radiohead had written the film's score.
A spokesperson for the band has denied that they wrote the whole score and claimed that they had only contributed 1 song to the film, 'Reckoner' from their latest album 'In Rainbows.'
