A man accused of creating a disturbance on an airliner by chanting Bible verses before being subdued by fellow passengers in flight was under evaluation Wednesday.
Authorities said Paul Marchuk III, 22, of Canton, Ga., was at Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute a day after a Delta airliner en route from Seattle to Atlanta made an unscheduled stop in Nashville because of an unruly passenger. No one was seriously hurt.
According to an arrest report, Marchuk became disruptive by reciting Bible verses, kicking and flailing and refusing to let another passenger use the bathroom.
He was removed from the plane and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest by airport police. Bond was set at $10,000, and officials in the Davidson County Criminal Court clerk's office said Wednesday he had no attorney.
Police said he did not threaten the pilots or the progress of the flight, but the crew decided that a stop at Nashville International Airport was necessary.
"He began talking loudly and touching other passengers seated close to him," the arrest report said. Additionally, he "repeatedly pressed the flight attendant call button with no purpose."
Marchuk would not allow a fellow passenger out of her seat to use the bathroom and told her that "his blood would be on her," the report said.
Six of the 178 passengers then assisted a flight attendant in getting him to the floor and holding him down for some 15 minutes before the plane landed.
Another court hearing was set for Thursday.

A woman who was thrown off an airplane for breast-feeding her child, sparking a day of airport protests nationwide, is suing the three airlines involved in the flight.
Emily Gillette's lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Burlington on Wednesday, comes nearly three years after she was taken off an airplane because she wouldn't cover herself with a blanket while nursing her 1-year-old daughter. Gillette, of Santa Fe, N.M., said she was ejected from the flight as it prepared to take off after a three-hour delay.
Her story generated interest around the nation, leading to a protest “nurse-in” in 19 airports in November 2006.
Gillette's suit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from Delta Airlines, Freedom Airlines and Mesa Air Group. The lawsuit says Freedom uses Mesa aircraft to run flights under contract with Delta, and that Gillette's flight was booked with Delta.
Delta spokesman Anthony Black said Thursday the Atlanta-based airline does not comment on litigation but supports a mother's right to breast-feed. A spokesman for Mesa, based in Phoenix, which owns Irving, Texas-based Freedom, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Meanwhile, the Vermont Human Rights Commission filed a state lawsuit Thursday against Mesa and Freedom. Executive Director Robert Appel said the commission had determined it could not hold Delta responsible for the actions of Mesa and Freedom.
Appel cited a Vermont law that says “a mother may breast-feed her child in any place of public accommodation in which the mother and child would otherwise have a legal right to be.”
Gillette's lawsuit says she was sitting in a window seat on an Oct. 13, 2006, flight from Burlington to New York City.
Gillette, who was 27 at the time, began nursing her “hungry and tired” daughter, 1-year-old River, and had the toddler “positioned with her head toward the aisle and no part of (Gillette's) breast exposed,” according to the lawsuit.
A flight attendant brought Gillette a blanket and told her to cover up, but Gillette declined. The flight attendant “forcefully demanded that (Gillette) cover the toddler's head, stating, ‘You are offending me,'” according to the suit.
When Gillette again declined, the flight attendant got a customer service representative to order Gillette and her family off the plane. Gillette “felt shamed and humiliated” and “tearfully gathered her belongings to exit the plane,” the lawsuit states.
Gillette “has since felt anxiety when she has breast-fed in places of public accommodation, and has felt inhibited from nursing her second child based on her experience” on the flight, the suit says.

On the morning of September 11th, a small group of Stanford Aeronautics and Astronautics students set up their class project at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center. The gear consisted of a small table, a couple of MacBooks and two battery-powered model airplanes. The goal: fly the autonomous balsawood and foam aircraft as high as possible.
One of the team, Zouhair Maboubi, launched the first plane, throwing it into the air much like you or I would throw a paper-dart, and it behaved just the same, crashing to the ground a few seconds after launch. It was 1 p.m. when the control tower at the Mexico City airport got the first word of a bizarre drama that would play out over the next two hours: The pilot of Aeromexico Flight 576 radioed that a man aboard claimed to have a bomb and wanted to talk with President Felipe Calderon.
Jose Flores, a 44-year-old Bolivian preacher who lives in Mexico, says he had gotten the word from God that he had to warn Mexicans of an impending disaster — an earthquake "like none there has ever been," he told reporters after being hustled off the plane by police without anyone being injured.
Unsuspecting passengers, including Americans and French tourists traveling from the beach resort of Cancun to Mexico City, sat not fully aware of what was happening as the pilot negotiated with Flores, bringing the plane to a smooth landing and after an hour or so of talking winning an agreement to end the standoff.
The crisis began when Flores told a flight attendant that a juice can he had was a bomb. The flight attendant notified the plane's captain over the intercom, Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna told reporters.
Flores kept the 103 passengers and crew on the tarmac for more than an hour, the plane sitting surrounded by heavily armed police at the end of a runway in an area designed for emergencies. The airport remained open.
Pilot Ricardo Rios told the Televisa television network that Flores requested that the Boeing 737 be flown around Mexico City seven times, but there wasn't enough fuel to do that. The hijacker also asked that women reporters and Calderon be at the airport to talk to him, Rios said.
"He said he had tried to speak to the president for three months and since there hadn't been an answer he decided to use these type of threats with an airline," the pilot said.
Eventually, Flores agreed to release women and children. Minutes later, masked police stormed onto the aircraft with guns drawn and soon escorted several handcuffed men away without firing a shot.
Police later said there was only one hijacker, and the other men were briefly detained because the suspect had told a flight attendant he had three accomplices.
Flores told police his three companions were "the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost."

The wife and mother of Italian tourists killed in Saturday's air collision over the Hudson River skipped the sightseeing flight to go shopping, according to media reports.
Michele Norelli, 51, his wife, Silvia Rigamonti, and their son, Filippo Norelli, 16, were visiting New York from Bologna, Italy, to celebrate the couple's 25th wedding anniversary.
But Rigamonti decided to visit New York stores instead of seeing its sights from above. Her husband and son were killed when their sightseeing helicopter collided with a single-engine plane, a Piper Saratoga PA-32, above the Hudson River.
The Norellis were ecstatic to be spending their anniversary in New York, their oldest son told Stampa newspaper in Turin, Italy.
"They used to talk about their trip at dinner with enthusiasm, of their silver anniversary and how they were going to celebrate it together. My aunt gave them the trip as a gift," the paper quotes Davide Norelli saying.
The 23-year-old economics major told Italian reporters that he was too busy with college studies to make the trip.
He also told Italian media that when he saw news of the crash, he called his mother and was relieved at first because she answered. Then came the devastating news, which he had to break to his 92-year-old paternal grandmother.
Three other tourists from Italy, Fabio Gallazzi, 49; his wife, Tiziana Pedroni, 44; and their son Giacomo Gallazzi, 15, along with pilot Jeremy Clarke, 32, also were killed when the helicopter plunged into the river.
Killed aboard the plane were the owner and pilot, Steven Altman, 60, of Ambler, Pennsylvania; his brother, Daniel Altman, 49, of Dresher, Pennsylvania; and Daniel Altman's 16-year-old son, Douglas.
Divers have recovered the bodies of seven victims and went back into the river Monday morning in search of the final two.
The wreckage of the chopper was pulled up Sunday.
"Almost all of it was intact," National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Debbie Hersman told CNN's "American Morning" on Monday.
Early Monday, divers said they believe the plane has been located as well. "We are very hopeful they might be able to pull that up today," Hersman said. Investigators are probing whether the high level of air traffic over the Hudson was a factor in the crash.
"This is a congested corridor," Hersman said. "And so I think we're going to have to see what the investigation develops, what the facts tell us, and then we will look to determine recommendations to prevent something like this from happening." See where the collision occurred »
Clarke, the pilot of the helicopter -- a Eurocopter AS350 -- had worked for Liberty Helicopter Sightseeing Tours for about a year and a half and had 2,700 helicopter flight hours, Hersman said.
The plane took off from a Philadelphia-area airfield Saturday morning, landed at New Jersey's Teterboro Airport and was bound for Ocean City, New Jersey.
Controllers lost contact with the plane at 11:53 a.m. ET when it was at an altitude of about 1,100 feet, Hersman said.
Investigators will focus on radio communications along the congested air corridor at the time of the crash and will examine any images contributed by the public.
Neither aircraft was required to carry the cockpit voice and flight data recorders found on larger planes. But electronic navigational devices on board might retain information that could help the crash investigation, Hersman said.
Investigators are unlikely to determine the probable cause of the crash for some time, Hersman said.
"We are looking at everything. Nothing has been ruled out," she said.

(HOBOKEN, N.J.) — Divers hope to pull a plane out of the Hudson River on Monday, but their first priority is to recover the bodies of two remaining victims of the air collision that killed nine people, a chief investigator said.
A Pennsylvania family and an Italian tourist group were killed in Saturday's crash of the small plane and a sightseeing helicopter in the busy skies of Manhattan.
Seven bodies were recovered — one teenage passenger on the plane and all six people aboard the helicopter. Divers resumed their search for the plane's pilot and an adult passenger on Monday. "We think we've had some positive hits on the skin of the airplane and we're very hopeful they'll be able to pull that up today," NTSB chief Debbie Hersman told CNN on Monday.
An Army Corps of Engineers crane lifted the twisted wreckage of the helicopter from 30 feet of water near the New Jersey shore on Sunday. A sonar scanner found the Piper Lancer nearby and more plane parts were found farther away under about 50 feet of water.
Hersman declined to speculate about the cause of the crash, the worst air disaster in New York City since a commercial jet crash in Queens killed 265 people in November 2001. The investigation is expected to take months.
Ben Lane warned fellow helicopter pilot Jeremy Clarke that the plane was bearing down on him. Lane told the Daily News in Monday's editions that another pilot heard him scream "Watch out! Watch out!"
He said he doesn't remember screaming, but does recall seeing a wing and chopper blades falling before both aircraft plummeted.
Lane said a crash was inevitable along the busy corridor. Helicopter pilots stay in constant radio contact, he said, but many small plane pilots do not.
Witnesses said the small plane approached the helicopter, which had just taken off for a 12-minute tour, from behind and clipped it with a wing. Hersman said the helicopter was gaining altitude at the time the two hit. Both aircraft split apart and fell into the river, scattering debris and sending weekenders enjoying the beautiful day running for cover.
The plane took off from the Teterboro Airport in New Jersey shortly before noon. Hersman said it was not required to have a flight plan and did not file one. The plane was flying at about 1,100 feet at the time of the crash, she said.

Witnesses say the accident happened just after noon between Manhattan and Hoboken, N.J. Both aircraft crashed into the water.
