A new study in mice suggests that a transcription factor normally found in male germ cells could become a target for cancer vaccines.
A transcription factor is a protein that controls the transfer (or transcription) of genetic material from the DNA to messenger RNA. This particular factor, known as Brother of the Regulator of Imprinted Sites (BORIS), promotes tumor growth.
Scientists were able to develop a vaccine from BORIS that was effective in helping stop the spread of a breast cancer-like tumor to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis.
The vaccine "is capable of inducing strong and effective antitumor immunity, but the efficacy of this [strategy] could be even better if one could eliminate immune suppressor cells," lead researcher Michael G. Agadjanyan, head of the department of immunology and professor at the University of California, Irvine's Institute for Molecular Medicine, said in a press release.
Researchers tested the value of a mutated virus using the factor on mice with a form of cancer similar to breast cancer found in humans. They delivered the vaccine into the body by using immune cells known as dendritic cells, whose treelike branches form connections with other cells in the body.
The factor delivered by dendritic cells "elicited strong antitumor cellular immune responses in tumor-free mice," Agadjanyan said. "More importantly, therapeutic vaccination dramatically inhibited both tumor growth and the number of metastases in the lungs of tumor-bearing mice."
He cautioned, however, that the BORIS-based vaccine did not entirely eliminate tumors or stop the spread of cancer. For that reason, it should be combined with other strategies that enlist the immune system to combat cancer, he said.
The study findings were scheduled to be released Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington D.C.

This guest post is a commentary from Dr. Sanjeev K. Sriram, MD, MPH a member of the National Physicians Alliance. This is a follow-up to his post about the decision by medical journal The Lancet to retract a controversial 1998 research paper suggesting a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.
My last post about the Lancet retracting Andrew Wakefield’s garbage article suggesting a link between MMR vaccines and autism got some interesting feedback. Some important comments were made about the vagueness of the metaphor I had drawn, so I felt I should clear the air.
Like many responsible pediatricians, I agree with an overwhelming body of scientific evidence that there is NO connection between any of the childhood vaccines and autism. For the parents of children with tough diagnoses, I empathize with the bewilderment they experience with the medical community’s apparent inconsistencies. Doctors seem to make miracles happen for many children, but we seem less capable with others. For pediatricians and child psychiatrists, there is still a lot to be discovered and learned about autism, learning disabilities, and other disorders. But in our determination to find answers, it is unacceptable to rush to quick and easy answers, and/or to perform sloppy work, all of which was the case for Andrew Wakefield.
In my last post, I referred to the “orchard” of the scientific and medical research establishment, and the “apples” of scientists and studies it produces. While the overwhelming majority of this orchard is producing great work, it is a very large establishment. Andrew Wakefield’s lapses of ethics and shoddy research methods demonstrate how there are places in the scientific community that could use more transparency and vigilant enforcement of basic ethical principles.
The scientific community does a disservice to struggling caregivers and families when research like Wakefield’s is published and then perpetuated. To me, the Lancet’s retraction is a day late and a buck short. Scientists who say one thing today and then reverse it tomorrow leave the public feeling dismayed. Parents who care for children with complex health problems have enough to worry about. They do not need their efforts and spirits to be burdened with distrust in their doctors and scientists. By restoring our commitment to integrity and standards of excellence, the scientific research establishment can make up for the damage wrought by Andrew Wakefield and his fellow “bad apples.”

James Wong thinks you should grow your own drugs.

"A Shreveport girl is battling a rare disease.
In December 5 year old Hannah Pham started complaining her leg was numb. When her parents took her to the hospital doctors diagnosed her with Tranverse Myelitis. It's a disease doctors say infects about 1 in a million people.
Experts say the disease is a neurological disorder which typically follows a virus.
Hannah got an swine flu shot in early December. The Pham family is worried that's what caused the illness, but the CDC hasn't reported any cases of Tranverse Myelitis following swine flu shots.

As a pediatrician and public health advocate, when I learned that the Lancet was finally retracting Andrew Wakefield’s bogus article that suggested a link between MMR vaccines and autism, I thought to myself, “Great, so we finally got rid of Wakefield’s bad apple, but what about the rest of the orchard?”
There is no doubt that Wakefield is one bad apple, and he must absolutely face the consequences for his disregard of basic ethics. According to the UK’s General Medical Council, Wakefield paid children 5 pounds at their birthday parties in exchange for their blood samples. By discrediting the old MMR, one of Wakefield’s side projects, a new vaccine he was inventing, would have made huge profits. The funding behind his “research” in the Lancet article was provided by a group of lawyers who just so happened to be suing the makers of MMR. These are more than just conflicts of interests, they are assaults on the trust between the general public and the scientific community. And for that, Wakefield deserves to have his medical license revoked, at the very least.
But I am weary of Wakefield becoming a scapegoat, which is often the result of too many authorities adopting the adage “one bad apple spoils the bunch.” Instead, I think we need to recognize that bad apples like Wakefield are the products of inattentive farming and inadequate sunlight in the medical-industrial research complex.
Though the scientific community may be frustrated every now and then by the mundane procedures of their institutional review boards (IRB’s), we need these ethics committees to be vigilant for the interests of patients and families. The pressure to produce profitable and popular answers to urgent questions is relentless. But in a world where the Supreme Court bestows corporations with the same rights as people, the scientific community must value the public’s trust above any individual researcher’s reputation, and above any industry’s revenue.
So in our justifiable criticism of Wakefield and the Lancet for their individual actions, I hope the medical establishment takes the time to realign its collective integrity.

A scientist with the World Health Organization has testified, during ongoing hearings in Strasbourg, France, that the swine flu pandemic was part of an overblown “angst campaign”, devised in conjunction with major drug companies to boost profits for vaccine manufacturers.

Drug companies manipulated the World Health Organisation into downgrading its definition of a pandemic so they could cash in on a swine flu outbreak, it is claimed.
An inquiry heard yesterday that the WHO allegedly softened its criteria for declaring a H1N1 flu pandemic last spring - just weeks before announcing there was a worldwide outbreak.
Critics said the decision was driven by pharmaceutical companies desperate to recoup the billions of pounds they had invested in researching and developing pandemic vaccines after the bird flu scares in 2006 and 2007.

As a result, millions of people have been vaccinated against a mild illness, and money that could have been used to prevent and treat major killers such as heart disease has been squandered.
The claims, which emerged during the first of several Council of Europe hearings into the handling of the swine flu pandemic, were strongly rejected by the WHO.
Following the organisation's declaration of a pandemic, the Department of Health warned of 65,000 deaths, set up a special advice line and website, and suspended normal rules so anti-flu drugs could be given without prescription.
But with just 250 or so deaths in Britain and 14,000 worldwide, the WHO is being asked to account for its actions.
The Government is now trying to off-load millions of jabs it ordered at the height of the scare. Sources say it is even considering giving some doses away for free.

responsible for the European Court of Human Rights, said vaccine contracts were put in place in 2007, when it was feared the more lethal bird flu virus would mutate into human form.
Drug companies, which spent up to £2.5billion developing a vaccine, then pushed their interests within the WHO, leading to the definition of a pandemic being softened and an outbreak declared.
He told the hearing: 'It was stated in panic- stricken terms that this was a flu that could threaten humanity and a great number of humans could fall ill.
'This is why billions of dollars of medications were bought.
Dr Wodarg, an expert on the spread of disease, said that the change in definition made it possible for a worldwide pandemic to be declared and for the pharmaceutical companies to cash in.
Also giving evidence, Professor Ulrich Keil, a WHO adviser on heart disease, said the decision had led to a 'gigantic misallocation' of health budgets.
'We know the great killers are hypertension, smoking, high cholesterol, high body mass index, physical inactivity and low fruit and vegetable intake,' he said.
'In spite of all these facts, governments instead wasted huge amounts of money by investing in pandemic scenarios whose evidence base is weak.'
But Dr Kieji Fukuda, the WHO's top flu expert, rejected the allegations. 'We do not wait until (these global virus outbreaks) have developed and we see that lots of people are dying,' he said.
'What we try to do is take preventive actions. Our purpose is to try to provide guidance, to reduce harm.'

In other words, if 100,000 people get infected with H1N1 and 100 might normally die, the study must show that fewer than 50 vaccinated people die. • Because vaccine promoters describe the vaccine as "safe enough for children and expectant mothers" and because vaccine promoters insist that there are absolutely no risks of long-term side effects, the study must demonstrate that the vaccine causes no statistically significant increase in side effects of any kind for a minimum of one year following the vaccine injection. You might think this is impossible to produce since the vaccine hasn't even existed for one year and couldn't have possibly been tested to see whether it produces neurological side effects in the one-year timeframe. That is exactly my point.
• Finally, due to widespread corruption and dishonesty in clinical trials that are funded by drug companies, these clinical trials must not be funded in whole or in part with drug company money. Funding for the studies must come from truly independent sources such as a government institution or a university with no financial ties to the vaccine manufacturer.
This is not a satire story or a parody. This $10,000 reward for scientific proof of the H1N1 vaccine safety and effectiveness is being offered in all seriousness. The offer is valid through March 31, 2010.

The CDC is engaged in a very clever, statistically devious spin campaign, and nearly every journalist in the mainstream media has fallen for its ploy. No one has yet reported what I'm about to reveal here.
It all started with the CDC's recent release of new statistics about swine flu fatalities, infection rates and vaccination rates. According to the CDC:
• 61 million Americans were vaccinated against swine flu (about 20% of the U.S. population). The CDC calls this a "success" even though it means 4 out of 5 people rejected the vaccines.
• 55 million people "became ill" from swine flu infections.
• 246,000 Americans were hospitalized due to swine flu infections.
• 11,160 Americans died from the swine flu.
Base on these statistics, the CDC is now desperately urging people to get vaccinated because they claim the pandemic might come back and vaccines are the best defense.
But here's the part you're NOT being told.
The CDC statistics lie by omission. They do not reveal the single most important piece of information about H1N1 vaccines: How many of the people who died from the swine flu had already been vaccinated?

The CDC is intentionally not tracking how many of the dead were previously vaccinated. They want you (and mainstream media journalists) to mistakenly believe that ZERO deaths occurred in those who were vaccinated. But this is blatantly false. Being vaccinated against H1N1 swine flu offers absolutely no reduction in mortality from swine flu infections.
And that means roughly 20% of the 11,160 Americans who died from the swine flu were probably already vaccinated against swine flu. That comes to around 2,200 deaths in people who were vaccinated!
How do I know that swine flu vaccines don't reduce infection mortality? Because I've looked through all the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials that have ever been conducted on H1N1 vaccines. It didn't take me very long, because the number of such clinical trials is ZERO.
That's right: There is not a single shred of evidence in existence today that scientifically supports the myth that H1N1 vaccines reduce mortality from H1N1 infections. The best evidence I can find on vaccines that target seasonal flu indicates a maximum mortality reduction effect of somewhere around 1% of those who are vaccinated. The other 99% have the same mortality rate as people who were not vaccinated.
So let's give the recent H1N1 vaccines the benefit of the doubt and let's imagine that they work just as well as other flu vaccines. That means they would reduce the mortality rate by 1%. So out of the 2,200 deaths that took place in 2009 in people who were already vaccinated, the vaccine potentially may have saved 22 people.
61 million injections add up to bad public health policy
So let's see: 61 million people are injected with a potentially dangerous vaccine, and the actual number "saved" from the pandemic is conceivably just 22. Meanwhile, the number of people harmed by the vaccine is almost certainly much, much higher than 22. These vaccines contain nervous system disruptors and inflammatory chemicals that can cause serious health problems. Some of those problems won't be evident for years to come... future Alzheimer's victims, for example, will almost certainly those who received regular vaccines, I predict.
Injecting 61 million people with a chemical that threatens the nervous system in order to avoid 22 deaths -- and that's the best case! -- is an idiotic public health stance. British researchers have developed a treatment that can be used to stop the disease returning after chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant.
Eventually it is hoped the drug, which activates the body's own immune system against the leukaemia, could be used to treat other types of cancers.
The first patients will be treated in the New Year as part of a small clinical trial at King's College London.
The patients in the trial have the form known as Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), the most common form in adults. Even with aggressive treatment half would usually find the disease returns.
The idea behind cancer 'vaccines" is not necessarily to prevent the disease. Instead, once a patient has been diagnosed, the 'vaccine' programmes the immune system to hunt down cancer cells and destroy them.
The vaccine then prompts the immune system to recognise leukaemia cells if they return which prevents a relapse of the disease.
The vaccine is created by removing cells from the patient's blood and manipulating them in the laboratory.
The cells are given two genes which act as flags to help identify the leukaemia. It effectively focuses and boosts the immune system's ability to seek out and destroy cancer cells.
The research is due to be published in the Journal of Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapy shortly.
Leukaemia is a cancer of the white blood cells and bone marrow and affects around 7,200 patients a year. Around 4,300 die from the disease annually.
Treatment comes in two stages - chemotherapy to rid the body of the disease, then to prevent it returning either further chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant.
Latest survival rates show that more than half the people with leukaemia die within five years of diagnosis.
The study led by Professors Ghulam Mufti and Farzin Farzaneh and Dr Nicola Hardwick at University College London, has involved intricate work to develop a man-made virus, similar to HIV, which carries the two genes into the immune system.
