By his own singularly woeful standard for political acumen, President Bush's Sunday night interview with NBC sportscaster-in-chief Bob Costas could have been a lot worse. Though he uttered typically myopic nuggets of optimistic tripe without any trace of irony ("I don't see America having problems"), the Olympics may be the one stage of world affairs where ham-fisted optimism is a forgivable sin. What emerges more from this compelling video is the "enlightening and substantive" probing of Costas' questions, his commitment to a standard of journalistic integrity disturbingly absent from the work of many of his colleagues on the mainstream media's political beat. As Jason Linkins aptly put it in The Huffington Post, Costas demonstrates "that there's a world of difference between a reporter with chops, knowledge, and genuine curiosity and those who work for the empty calories of a "gotcha" moment".

This evening, NBC interrupted its Olympics coverage of women’s gymnastics for an interview with President Bush. Last week, Bush gave a speech and expressed “deep concerns” with China’s “detention of political dissidents, human-rights advocates and religious activists.” Costas brought up this speech and asked about “America’s own problems.” Bush denied that America has any problems:
COSTAS: This past week, you restated America’s fundamental differences with China. But given China’s growing strength, and America’s own problems, realistically, how much leverage does the U.S. have here?
BUSH: First of all, I don’t see America having problems. I see America as a nation that is a world leader that has got great values.

Apparently, the indefinite detention of prisoners, a $490 billion deficit, and a credit crisis aren’t problems.

American speed skater Joey Cheek has done a great deal to bring global attention to the immense suffering of the people of Darfur, forming Team Darfur and even going so far as donating his $40k Olympic bonus to the cause in 2006. Unfortunately, the gold and silver medalist was punished for his activism by the Chinese government — who has contributed to the genocide in Darfur by fueling and supporting Sudan’s murderous military government — when they revoked his visa this week, preventing him from attending this year’s Olympics in Beijing.
During the opening ceremony NBC’s Bob Costas discussed the controversy surrounding Cheek and the Chinese government, noting that he made it clear he would not protest the Chinese government during the Olympics:
Costas: “Joey Cheek had planned to invoke the Olympic truce, the time-honored concept of an Olympic truce, to call attention to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. He did not intend to directly protest the Chinese government. The fact that they pulled his visa is so contrary to the Olympic ideal it is simply outrageous.”
I wondered if NBC was going to cave on this or take a stand and defend Cheek against the reprehensible actions of the Chinese government. I applaud Costas for choosing the latter. American speed skater Joey Cheek has done a great deal to bring global attention to... more
