Like a character from a movie, Ignacio Del Rio, one of the most industrious cat burglars in Los Angeles history, created a training video as part of his plea bargain. This also included sketching a detailed "treasure map" that led police to $400,000 worth of jewellery he had buried in a plastic pipe beneath a flyover.
He would explore neighbourhoods, smartly dressed and armed with a list of plausible stories to explain his presence.
Often he cleared up after himself so homeowners, including film industry figures and at least one high-ranking corporate chief, would not realise they had been burgled until long after the crime.
Del Rio, who also goes by the name Ricardo Caveda and has a business degree, then hauled his takings to a storage facility or buried it under a flyover.
