As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies. As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. .... read more http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/43010-declaration-of-the-occupation-of-new-york-cityAs we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must... more

Guillermo Gomez-Sanchez is a 50 year old legal resident with a mental disability. In 2004 Gomez was detained because of a dispute at a grocery store over a bag of tomatoes.
Guillermo spent 2 years at a private CCA (Corrections Corporation of America) detention facility - the corporation neglected to report his medical condition.
CCA profited close to $90,000 off of Gomez' incarceration, and ensured greater profit by failing to disclose his mental disability effectively leaving Guillermo trapped for 2 years. In 2010 CCA CEO Damon T. Hininger received $3,266,387 in total compensations.

In the past 20 years, the US economy has grown nearly 60 percent. This huge increase in productivity is partly due to automation, the internet, and other improvements in efficiency. But it's also the result of Americans working harder—often without a big boost to their bottom lines. Oh, and meanwhile, corporate profits are up 20 percent. (Also read our essay on the great speedup and harrowing first-person tales of overwork.)

Freeganism is a total boycott of an economic system where the profit motive has eclipsed ethical considerations and where massively complex systems of productions ensure that all the products we buy will have detrimental impacts most of which we may never even consider. Thus, instead of avoiding the purchase of products from one bad company only to support another, we avoid buying anything to the greatest degree we are able.
Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Freegans embrace community, generosity, social concern, freedom, cooperation, and sharing in opposition to a society based on materialism, moral apathy, competition, conformity, and greed. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/recent-news/42951-freegan-Freeganism is a total boycott of an economic system where the profit motive has... more

I can appreciate the need to have the "control" over raw materials; however the best way to ensure TRUE profit is to be in the refining and distribution of fuel.
If the KOCH bros want to get the American people honestly on their side, perhaps they should consider INVESTING all their BILLIONS in refineries.....talk about an entrepenurial boom!! Hell, Trump brags about his "net worth"; wanna get elected????? build a refinery instead of the faux reality show; less money, more jobs, more votes more, more , more.....I can appreciate the need to have the "control" over raw materials; however... more

CAN THE PEOPLE OWN THEIR OWN BANK?
After predatory and exploitive banks nearly caused the collapse of the international banking system, have you wondered whether the people could start their own public bank, and in the process starve some of the banking beasts which have been preying upon us?
With the current success of online banking, the possibility is not that impractical. In discussing this issue with those learned in banking, I've recognized that all it would take to create our own public bank, is for a few committed individuals to join together and start one. It seems that rather than start one from scratch, a quicker and easier approach would be to purchase an existing, and possibly failing, bank, to serve as an already chartered brick and mortar base, or hub, and grow the bank online from there. Online banking is already proven viable and profitable.
The question, after securing the initial investors, is whether to keep the bank stock private to the original investors, but structure the bank's practices as public serving, not public exploiting, or, to offer bank stock for purchase to all depositors who wish to purchase them. This option would result in a bank with the greatest public character. There is also the possibility, depending on the sentiments of the original investors, to structure the bank as a non profit. This, of course, begs the question of why would the original investors put up the seed money, if it isn't for a return on their investment. Profit is not of itself, bad, of course. But here we have the option, a non profit public bank, or a socially responsible profit making bank. It would be very worthwhile to take the socially conscious person's pulse on this issue. Would you do business with a principally online bank, if it afforded you better value for your money, was more socially responsible than traditional banks, and, simultaneously deprived the out of control banks which have been wrecking havoc with all of us, from all profit possible?CAN THE PEOPLE OWN THEIR OWN BANK?

Billionaire financier George Soros stands to make handsome profits with his newly launched investment fund, established to capitalize on new “green energy” — a policy agenda largely dependent on government subsidies supported by the Obama White House.
In a statement announcing the new venture — dubbed Silver Lake Kraftwerk (SLKW) — Soros describes the fund’s role to “leverage technology and business model innovation to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and emissions, harness renewable energy, and more efficiently use natural resources, among other applications… Developing alternative sources of energy and achieving greater energy efficiency is both a significant global investment opportunity and an environmental imperative.”
SLKW is “focused on providing growth capital to business innovators in the energy and resource sectors” and will operate in Silicon Valley and China.
The Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney notes the connection between Soros’ generous financing for liberal groups and their advancement of the “green” agenda. “The big-government policies advanced by the liberal outfits he funds — like Center for American Progress — will enrich the companies in which Soros is investing.”

It has been with great opposition that the current congress oppose the EPA. They speak of how they met with business owner after business owner and how they are forced to move the jobs over seas. This is not imposed by the EPA but it is a direct indication that they refuse to abandon such archaic practices and move toward technological advances that would free us from NON- renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, the impacts on our health and environment is compromised. If adhering to the rules means that the industries that support the old methods will crumble then so be it. The EPA protects us from the pollutants they create and also protects the environments we aim to protect.
The latest technologies would allow them to drill under such monumental protective lands such as Yellow Stone and Yosemite. The raping of our planet for the sake of PROFIT does not meet in the public interest of co-existence. Our technological advances are packed away for there is little to profit from something that is in abundance. I haven't heard any of those in favor of the bill step up and say "I just got done talking to the American people and they say..." Big business is not in the business to keep a clean environment(look at the cancer growth in the countries they now occupy), They are in the business for exploitation of the environment and the people. Flickr user DonkeyHotey, via Creative CommonsWith millions of Americans out of work, House Republicans are focusing in on real priorities: decimating private abortion coverage and crippling public funding for abortion, as Jessica Arons reports in RH Reality Check.
In AlterNet, Amanda Marcotte notes that the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, or H.R. 3, also redefines rape as “forcible rape” in order to determine whether a patient is eligible for a Medicaid-funded abortion. Under the Hyde Amendment, government-funded insurance programs can only cover abortions in cases of rape and incest, or to save the life of the mother. Note that the term “forcible rape” is legally meaningless. Supporters of the bill just want to go on the record as saying that a poor 13-year-old girl pregnant by a 30-year-old should be forced to give birth.
Feminist blogger Sady Doyle has launched a twitter campaign against the bill under the hashtag #dearjohn, a reference to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). Tweet to let him know how you feel about a bill that discriminates against 70% of rape victims because their rapes weren’t violent enough for @johnboehner, append the hashtag #dearjohn.
Everybody chill out
A federal judge in Florida ruled the entire Affordable Care Act unconstitutional on Monday. However, as political scientist and court watcher Scott Lemieux explains at TAPPED, the ruling is not necessarily a death blow to health care reform:
[T]his ruling is less important than the controversy it will generate might suggest. Many cornerstone programs of the New Deal were held unconstitutional by lower courts before being upheld by the Supreme Court. This ruling tells us nothing we didn’t already know: There is a faction of conservative judges who believe the individual mandate is unconstitutional. Unless this view has the support of five members of the Supreme Court — which I still consider very unlikely — it won’t matter; Vinson’s reasoning would have a much greater impact if adopted by the Court, but for this reason it is even less likely to be adopted by higher courts.
In a follow-up post, Lemieux explains the shaky legal reasoning behind Judge Robert Vinson’s decision. The judge asserts bizarrely that being uninsured has no effect on interstate commerce. That premise is objectively false. Health insurers operate across state lines and the size and composition of their risk pools directly affects their business.
Given the glaring factual inaccuracies, Judge Vinson’s decision may be overturned by a higher court before it gets to the Supreme Court.
Scamming Medicare
Terry J. Allen of In These Times win’s the headline of the week award for an article entitled “Urology’s Golden Revenue Stream.” She reports that increasing numbers of urologists are investing millions on machines to irradiate prostate cancer in the office. The doctors can bill Medicare up to $40,000 per treatment, but they have to use the machines a lot to recoup the initial investment. So what does this mean for patients? Allen explains:
Rather than accessing centralized equipment and sharing costs, physicians are concentrating their own profits by buying expensive in-practice technologies that pay off only if regularly used. One result is overtreatment, which is driving up health care costs, exposing patients to unnecessary radiation and surgeries, and is frequently no better than cheaper approaches.
One third of Medicare patients with prostate cancer undergo the expensive IMRT therapy, as the procedure is known. In 2008, Medicare shelled out over a billion dollars on a treatment that has not shown to be any better for patients than less expensive therapies.
Obstetric fistula in the developing world
Reproductive Health Reality Check is running a special series on the human rights implications of obstetric fistula. Fistula is a devastating complication of unrelieved obstructed labor in which the baby’s head gets stuck in the birth canal and presses against the soft tissues of the pelvis. If labor goes on long enough, the pressure will starve the pelvic tissues of blood, and they will die, creating a hole between the vagina and the bladder, and/or between the vagina and the rectum. Fistula patients face lifelong incontinence, chronic pain, and social ostracism.
The condition is virtually unknown in the developed world, where women with obstructed labor have access to cesarean delivery. However, an estimated 2 million women, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, have untreated fistulas with an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 new cases occurring each year. Without reconstructive surgery, these women will be incontinent for life.
Sarah Omega, a fistula survivor from Kenya, tells her story. Omega sustained a fistula when she delivered her first child at the age of 19. She suffered for 12 years before she finally obtained the surgery she needed. As Agnes Odhiambo explains in another installment in the series, fistula is a symptom of a dysfunctional health care system. Women suffer needlessly because they can’t get access to quality health care.
The most likely victims of fistula are the most vulnerable members of their respective communities. Early childbearing increases a woman’s risk of fistula. Pregnant rape victims may face even greater barriers to a safe delivery, thanks to the social stigma that accrues to victims of sexual violence in many societies. (Not to mention any names, House Republicans…)
Preventing and repairing obstetric fistula is a major human rights issue. The U.S. should make this effort a high priority for foreign aid.

An extensive study into the effect of digitalization on the music industry in Norway has shed an interesting light on the position of artists today, compared to 1999. While the music industry often talks about artists being on the brink of bankruptcy due to illicit file-sharing, the study found that the number of artists as well as their average income has seen a major increase in the last decade.

Auction site operator eBay has reported a 26% rise in profits for the last three months thanks largely to increased use of its PayPal service.
Profits for the quarter totalled $412m (£272m), the company said, up from $327m a year ago.
Sales were up 20% internationally, but rose only 2% in the US, demonstrating its reliance on international growth.
Ebay's online payments business, which includes PayPal, saw revenues rise by 22%.
"We are not satisfied with our US results," said John Donahoe, eBay's chief executive, in a conference call with investors.
He said the strengthening dollar was also a concern, reducing the value of sales made abroad.

For adults looking to earn some extra money, there was a job advertisment last year that may have tickled their fancy: tester for Durex condoms.
Durex said it would pay 5,000 people across the UK £500 to help evaluate its latest range of products.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the unusual job offer made a few headlines.
For a brand that for 81 years has been the best-selling condom in the UK, it was just the latest example of its skill at self-promotion.
But now Durex is in the news for strictly business reasons, with the annoucement that its owner - UK group SSL International - has agreed to be bought by Anglo-Dutch consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser for £2.54bn.
With SSL's shareholders widely expected to back the deal, Reckitt says Durex will be added to its so-called "powerbrand" group of best-selling products, which includes Vanish stain remover and Finish dishwasher tablets.
Ignoring the temptation to speculate whether doing domestic cleaning can have an aphrodisiac effect, it is the latest development in Durex's colourful history.
Also, all Durex condoms are made in Asia, quite cruel dont you think when in most asian countries it is cheaper to have sex with an STD ridden prostitute than it is to buy condoms!
