President Palin ?

Progressives who fail to take Sarah Palin seriously do so at their peril. In my mind, it's pretty obvious that she already is laying the groundwork for a run in 2012. And given her actions over the past two months, it is a safe bet that she will do anything and everything in her power to win.

The key question is not whether she will challenge Obama, but rather what kind of race she will run. Is Palin merely another ambitious politician willing to say and do anything to get elected, or are we witnessing the emergence of a genuinely anti-democratic populist — a successor to such notorious figures as Charles Coughlin, Huey Long, Senator Joseph McCarthy, and George Wallace?

I believe that Palin could represent a significant threat. She favors demagoguery over democracy. She celebrates her own lack of judgment and experience as her best qualifications for the office she seeks. She slanders Obama and other opponents, suggesting that they are willing to sell out America. She uses her supposedly folksy background to attack the media and elites as out of touch with average Americans. And she plays to the mob, appealing to and encouraging the most reactionary, angry, hateful, and fearful elements of our society.

To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, Palin appeals to the worst angels of our nature. Her supporters are ready, willing, and determined to follow her regardless of what happens between now and Election Day 2012. They will never accept an Obama presidency, even if he were to revive the economy, fix health care, and capture bin Laden. They are counting the days until Palin is able to push him aside and assume power herself.

It would be easy to suggest that Palin is little more than a demagogue, that she would not move the United States away from its democratic traditions. And in fairness, we are still too early in Palin’s career to determine whether she is a genuine threat.

But do we really want to take the chance?

If Palin really does represent a move toward anti-democratic populism, she already is far more dangerous than any earlier demagogue. She’s not merely some nutjob with a radio following (Coughlin), or a regional figure who failed to move onto the national stage (Long). She’s the former Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States, a best-selling author, a canny entertainer, and a political superstar whose public profile resembles that of Angelina Jolie more than, say, Mitt Romney.

No previous populist anti-democratic candidate -- not Strom Thurmond in 1948 or George Wallace in 1968 -- ever had a serious chance of getting elected. Palin does. Change genders, and Palin is a modern day evocation of Senator Berzelius “Buzz” Windrup, the anti-hero of It Can’t Happen Here, Sinclair Lewis’s Depression-era alternate history of America under a dictatorship:
The conspicuous fault of the [Democratic] Party. . . was that it represented integrity and reason, in a year when the electorate hungered for frisky emotions, for the peppery sensations associated, usually, not with monetary systems and taxation rates but with baptism by immersion in the creek, young love under the elms, straight whisky, angelic orchestras heard soaring down from the full moon, fear of death when an automobile teeters above a canyon, thirst in a desert and quenching it with spring water–all the primitive sensations which they thought they found in the screaming of Buzz Windrip.

Sarah Palin is ready. Should things get worse over the next three years, her folksiness and rhetoric may start appealing to more than just the far right.

And actually planted one in the US Pentagon and also was responsible for killing many Police Officers. Ayres Doren and Obama all lived within shouting distance from each other in NYC Ayres and Obama were also on the same campus in NYC at the same time.... Obama admits during that time he was involved in the Antiapraited Movement in NYC as was Ayres and Doren with the Weather Underground. During this same time the Black Panther Movement and the Weather Underground combined forces. Rudolph Geuallini was the Prosecutor who tried and convicted many of the Black Panthers along with the Weather Underground during the 80’s working together..... not the 60’s as Obama would have you believe. So there you have it Obama Ayres Doren all in the same City at the same time on the same Collage Campus working together for the same cause “antiapartite movement. For them not to have known each other would be unreasonable. And yes again Obama is a complete fraud. Bill Ayres did write his book. Ayres is Obama’s Mentor more so than anyone even Rev Wright and 20 years of attending that Hate Church. U.S. to fund Somali weapons, training

The Obama administration has decided to bolster efforts to support Somalia's embattled government, U.S. officials say, by providing money for weapons and helping the military in neighboring Djibouti train Somali forces.

The goal is to stem insurgent advances in the Horn of Africa. But the plan would commit the U.S. to a greater embrace of a shaky government atop one of the world's most chaotic states.

An administration review of U.S. policy toward Somalia found an urgent need to supply the Somali government with ammunition and weapons as it struggles to confront increasingly powerful Islamic militants.

Officials said the U.S. would not conduct the training and that the U.S. military would not be in Somalia. The U.S. would provide logistical support for the training, and provide arms to the Somalis.

Several U.S. officials spoke about the emerging plan on condition of anonymity because the details have not yet been finalized.

Alarmed by terrorists' gains in Somalia, the administration decided it needed to do more to support Somalia's transitional federal government, officials said. They said the U.S. has agreed to reimburse other African nations, primarily Uganda, that will transfer small arms and ammunition to Somalia. To date, officials said, only ammunition has been shipped.

Somalia's violent insurgency has spilled over onto U.S. soil, raising the fear that a failed state there could affect U.S. security. Young Somali-American men have disappeared from the Minneapolis region and are believed to have traveled to Somalia to fight with al-Shabab militants. One strapped on explosives last fall in a coordinated attack in Somalia, becoming the first U.S. citizen to act as a suicide bomber.

U.S. counterterrorism officials say it is a disturbing pattern, one that mirrors al-Qaida methods and could spawn homegrown insurgents and suicide bombers in the U.S.

Iran Demonstrations: Violent Clashes Between Protestors And Riot Police

Security officials and riot police engaged in violent clashes with demonstrators in Tehran today in what one reporter called an "unprecedented scene" in Iran in recent years.

NBC producer Ali Arouzi described the events on Saturday:

What started off as a small rally outside a pro-reformist newspaper swelled into a massive crowd of people chanting, "Death to the dictator, death to Ahmadinejad!"

Then, what started with a small amount of police pushing the crowd back turned into huge riot police in armored gear and motor bikes beating all the young students here with batons, knocking them back. The students responded by throwing stones, which the police then threw back. Now the police are coming off all the heart streets and main streets to try and disperse the crowd. But this is an unprecedented scene in Iran today.

Arouzi said that many of the demonstrators, afraid of reprisals, were wearing green scarves and surgical masks.

Asked if he believed the election results being reported by Iran's Interior Ministry, Arouzi sounded highly skeptical. "If you were in Tehran the last few days, you would think it impossible that Ahmadinejad won," he said. "Everybody we spoke to was a supporter of Mousavi."

He noted that Mousavi's supporters acknowledged that he was somewhat of a blank slate politically, but that the presidential election had become a referendum on Ahmadinejad.

Arouzi then described the protests in greater detail:

Initially, it was a peaceful demonstration. People were forming a human chain, saying they wanted their vote back... but the more the police came, the angrier the mob got. It became sort of a mob mentality here. Now the police have swelled in huge numbers. They are being very, very violent with the crowds.

Every young person I've spoken to here, I've asked them, 'do you think you coming out onto the streets is going to make a change?' They said, no, but we have to come out anyway if we want our voices to be heard, but they're sure this won't make a change.

Demonstrators have been injured. People have come up to us and they've shown us that their arms have been bruised, black eyes, broken noses, bloody heads. But they are fighting back as well. This is, I mean, I've been in Iran four years here and everything here has always been contained. Today we saw the demonstrators setting on the police. An hour ago, maybe 30, 40 demonstrators rushed the police, throwing stones at them.
