I see very little coverage of this and see reports with diminished numbers of attendees. There were thousands, not hundreds as seems to be being reported from other sources.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/12/wall-street-march-may-12_n_861367.html
Thousands of teachers, social workers, union members and more took part in a march Thursday against Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plans for wide-ranging budget cuts -- and against the Wall Street bankers they blame for the city's budget woes.
Activists reported that the NYPD had arrested several marchers, but the demonstration took on a mostly joyful cast, with colorful signs, raucous chants and even a stilt-walker.
The May 12 Coalition's organizers promised a big turnout of more than 10,000 marchers, and while immediately pinning down the crowd's size proved difficult, at least that number turned out.
Demonstrators from the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) alone, which faces more than 4,000 teacher cuts if Bloomberg's budget is enacted as is, numbered in the thousands.
Rev. Al Sharpton, UFT President Michael Mulgrew and an array of city councilmembers and state elected officials laid the blame for the budget cuts squarely at Bloomberg and Wall Street's feet.
"Wall Street recovered, hedge funds got stimulated, and now they want to lay off teachers and close day care centers," Sharpton said. "We're going where they sent the money," he said of the march.
Organizers claimed the city could prevent budget cuts by reinstating the state's "Millionaire Tax," ending subsidies for large companies that failed to meet job-creation targets and renegotiating city contracts with the big banks. They estimate their proposals could save New York City $1.5 billion and billed the event as a demonstration not just against the Bloomberg budget plan but also as an effort to "make the banks pay."I see very little coverage of this and see reports with diminished numbers of... more

We would all prosper if we had a service that would allow your typical volunteer to get paid per hour if they needed it. Perhaps this could be funded by donations and grants but also by people who think they are getting paid too much. (ie a Bank CEO wink wink.)
For example I have volunteered my services over the years at my children's school but it was tough for me with other obligations. But if I could have earned minimum wage the schools could have benefited from my business degree and art skills without hiring professionals at full cost.
This is just bubbling up in my mind.
It would be easy to implement this through existing webs such as Idealist and a donation site with modifications. It would need a little startup.
I have to go but am posting this.
What do you think? We would all prosper if we had a service that would allow your typical volunteer to... more

Tim Yeo MP, House of Commons, Westminister, London 25th Nov 2009
Social workers who forced a couple to give up their 11-week-old baby for adoption have been accused of 'child kidnap' by an MP.
Staff waited until the girl's father was out before launching a raid with police at the family home to 'snatch the baby from the arms of her mother'.
Tory MP Tim Yeo used Parliamentary privilege to make the allegations in the Commons, saying Suffolk County Council had declared the couple to be unfit parents despite having no evidence of physical or emotional abuse.
'This council actively seeks opportunities to remove babies from their mothers,' he added.
'Its social work staff do so in a manner which in my view is sometimes tantamount to child kidnapping.'

Stressful Jobs That Pay Badly

1. Social Worker
Median pay: $43,200
% who say their job is stressful: 72%
Social workers step in when everyone else steps aside to help people and families in vulnerable situations. They provide patients with education and counseling, advise care givers and make referrals for other services. And with social workers in short supply and programs underfunded, few must juggle the work of many, while reaping little reward.
Just ask Heather Griffith, a social worker who works with children in intensive foster care in Boston: "You're getting paid $12 an hour and kids are screaming at you, telling you that you are just in it for the money and you're just like, really?"

Dangerously overweight children will have to be taken from their parents and put into care because of Britain's worsening "obesity epidemic", council leaders have warned.
One million children will be clinically obese within four years on current trends, storing up future problems from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes.
The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents 400 councils in England and Wales, predicted social services teams would have to take drastic action to improve the health of seriously overweight children.
Social workers have only become involved very rarely in such cases, considering the issue is best tackled by parents.
But the LGA warned that social services might have to treat very fat children as victims of "parental neglect" – just as malnourished children are.
It predicted that social services would have to intervene "more and more" with obese children. It added that councils would have to take action against parents who put their children's health at risk, with the ultimate sanction of taking the fattest boys and girls into care.
The LGA said Britain was fast becoming the "obesity capital of the world" and the increasing weight of the average citizen was pushing up council tax bills.

They fought a landmark legal case for the right to keep their youngest child after the forcible adoption of their first three children in what has been described as ‘an appalling miscarriage of justice.’
Now Mark and Nicky Webster are celebrating learning that Nicky is pregnant once more.
The news comes as the couple prepare to launch their Appeal Court bid to be reunited with their three oldest children, who were all under the age of five when they were removed from their care by Norfolk County Council four years ago.
The children, who can only be referred to as Child A, B and C for legal reasons, were adopted in 2004, following a Family Court hearing that lasted just one day and relied almost entirely on now discredited medical evidence that a fracture sustained by Child B could only have been caused by violent abuse. They fought a landmark legal case for the right to keep their youngest child after the... more
