This clarity is what allows coaches, players, and fans to know what it is that their team needs to accomplish over these final weeks of the season in order to reach primary or secondary goals that they have for their team....As the season begins to wind down, the post-season picture begins to gain clarity.... more

Even if Kevin Riley one day wins a national championship with the Cal Bears, it will always be his first NCAA start that will be forever talked about when mentioning his Cal career. For those of you that are new to the Bears or have successfully blocked the experience from your mind, let me explain...Even if Kevin Riley one day wins a national championship with the Cal Bears, it will... more

After an inconsistent first half from Cal's starting quarterback, Nate Longshore, coach Jeff Tedford chose to bring in this week's backup, Kevin Riley. Riley started last week against Oregon, but suffered a concussion early in the game. He may have started against the Trojans had he been able to get more reps during practice this week. The lack of reps, showed as Riley often missed his receivers when they were open and held onto the ball too long on some plays...After an inconsistent first half from Cal's starting quarterback, Nate Longshore,... more

It's true about this year being a 'down' year for the Pac-10. The MWC and the WAC teams have shown that they can compete and win in the Pac-10 this season, which for an elite conference is not good news. With that reality, teams from other lesser-conferences would still be hard-pressed to make a case against either of the two teams playing in the Pac-10 marquee matchup this weekend....It's true about this year being a 'down' year for the Pac-10. The MWC... more

How appropriate that Saturday of all days, there would be stormy weather. Ducks love water don't they? Well, the Ducks from Oregon would probably disagree with that premise, especially after their contest with Cal...How appropriate that Saturday of all days, there would be stormy weather. Above are the players that have already committed to Cal for the 2009 season. Signing day isn't until February, but the Bears are not gaining commitments at a pace that would lead you to believe that they have a program to challenge for a title. After looking at the teams that lead Cal in recruiting this year, it's puzzling that Cal's recruiting class has been slow to develop...Above are the players that have already committed to Cal for the 2009 season. I don't propose to know more about football than Cal's main man, Jeff Tedford. In fact, I don't think there has been a better head man for Cal in the past 20 years. That doesn't mean that I can't disagree with his methods at times, and this is one of those times...I don't propose to know more about football than Cal's main man, Jeff... more

The first half theme has been the ineptitude of UCLA's offense or the magnificent Cal defense, depending on who you're talking to. You could also say that it's a combination of both. This week has been great for me personally, and for the Cal Bears Examiner. We've had some of Oski's Favorite sites examine the Cal Bears starting with California Golden Blogs, Bears Necessity, and now Bears with Fangs. The more things change, the more they stay the same. As the Bears continue their move back on to the national stage, Bears Backers are still locked into a debate that has been going on for a year now. To Riley, or not to Riley? That is really the question....The more things change, the more they stay the same. As the Bears continue their move... more

The Pac-10 is not considered very strong this year. Many pundits over the weekend took shots at the lack of strength within the conference, while some of the major news outlets completely discounted everyone in the conference except for USC. Is it true? Has the Pac-10 finally become as soft as the Big 10? Are they just as fallible as the WAC or the Mountain West Conference?...The Pac-10 is not considered very strong this year. Even though Jeff Tedford had opened up his quarterback competition, many insiders expected that Nate Longshore would only get some mop-up time if the situation called for it. When a team is bad, it's easy to throw caution to the wind and make adjustments where necessary. Are the Bears a bad team? Jeff Tedford is beginning to leak some of the players that he has in mind for starting spots when Cal faces Michigan State August 30th. With less than two weeks before Cal's football season begins, there is still no clear cut starter for the most important position on the team, quarterback.
