Propped up on crisp white pillows in a sunny ward, the patient's first words for five years will be mumbled through a stranger's lips.
As close members of his family lean over his bed to hear him, they may strain to understand what he is trying to say. They certainly will not recognise the face that the sounds are coming from.
The man in the hospital ward in Barcelona, Spain, will look younger than the loved one they remember before every feature on his 30-year-old face was blasted away in a freak and near-fatal shotgun accident in 2005.

Doctors replaced 80 percent of patient’s face in 22-hour surgery
CLEVELAND - Her injuries were ghastly: no nose, no palate, no way to eat or breathe on her own, a face so hideous that children who saw her screamed and ran away.
From the moment they met earlier this year, Dr. Maria Siemionow knew the severely disfigured woman would be the one — the first person in the U.S. to receive a face transplant.
“Our patient was called names and was humiliated. You need a face to face the world,” said Siemionow, the Cleveland Clinic reconstructive surgeon who led the operation about two weeks ago.Doctors replaced 80 percent of patient’s face in 22-hour surgery

The Cleveland Clinic will announce Wednesday the successful completion of a near-total face transplant surgery, a clinic spokeswoman told CNN on Tuesday.
In the surgery -- which was conducted two weeks ago by a team of eight surgeons at the Cleveland, Ohio, hospital -- 80 percent of the trauma patient's face was transplanted, the spokeswoman said. The forehead and chin were left intact.
The surgery was the first such operation done in the United States. In 2005, French doctors performed the world's first partial face transplant on a 38-year-old woman who was disfigured when she was attacked by a dog.
"I hope the successful operation will help other people like me to live again," said Isabelle Dinoire, the French woman who received a nose, lips and chin.

Hi Currenteers,
This Saturday's picks are........
First we have an article titled "One million beers later and its a unique Buddhist temple" (http://current.com/items/89572327/one_million_beers_later_and_its_a_unique_buddhist_temple.htm) from user Brian_Calvert about a Buddhist temple near the Cambodian border made from beer bottles. WOW! Did they drink all that? Haha, nah! The article says the bottles were donated from local communities. Check out the article to see what else in the temple is made out of beer bottles ;) --- Oh, and the pictures are super too!
Next, we have "Military Hospital In China Conducts Face Transplants" (http://current.com/items/89572751/military_hospital_in_china_conducts_face_transplants.htm) an article from user nazbags. Did you also think of the movie "Face Off" when you read that title? Unlike the movie, however, the patients of these procedures are victims of accidents and attacks. In the past, there were partial face transplants, but China is attempting to perform the first full facial transplant. Warning, there is a video on the source site that is a bit graphic.
This last one seems like something from a movie, it's titled "Baby born 'pregnant'"(http://current.com/items/89570069/baby_born_pregnant.htm) from user nazbags. This one is totally weird. A baby in Saudi Arabia was born with a fetus -- its twin -- growing inside her. The mother was pregnant with two fetuses, but some how one of them ended up growing inside the other. This is the first time I've ever heard of something like this, but apparently, according to the comments, this is not something new. Check out the story and the comments and let us know if you've heard of anymore cases like this one.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Successful results from two more face transplants will speed progress towards similar operations in other countries, say experts.
The Lancet journal reported operations involving a bear attack victim in China, and a French patient with a massive facial tumour had taken place.
The Chinese patient was given not just the lip, nose, skin and muscle from a donor, but even some facial bone.
Specialists in London are working towards the UK's first transplant.
Frenchwoman Isabel Dinoire became the world's first face transplant patient in 2005 after being savaged by a pet dog. She described the results of the operation as a "miracle".
The latest operations were just as complex, but involved different challenges for French and Chinese surgeons.
