Ascetics with Cameras is a seva (volunteer service) organization providing multimedia services, tools and training to Shiva's Army – the sadhus & sadhvis of Juna Akhara – since 2004. It is our mission to not only provide multimedia tools to document and preserve the living-histories of these followers of Sanatan Dharma, but more importantly to train the members (of the oldest and largest order of Dasnaami Hindu ascetics) to document it for themselves. Giving them the skills to share with the world the stories and aspects of their culture they find important, will empower these ascetics to participate in the process of media-making to which their Akhara has been subject for centuries and enlighten audiences to the sacred, ancient paths and esoteric traditions of truth seekers.

In his book 'Discovery of India', Jawaharlal Nehru writes,
The Ganges, above all is the river of India, which has held India's heart captive and drawn uncounted millions to her banks since the dawn of history. The story of the Ganges, from her source to the sea, from old times to new, is the story of India's civilization and culture, of the rise and fall of empires, of great and proud cities, of adventures of man…

This is an excerpt from a kathak dance program featuring a half-dozen of my friends from Benares.
In this piece, the dancers are my dear friends Ravi Shankar Mishra and Mata Prasad Mishra.
It is a devotional dance dedicated to Shiva.
The musicians are:
Ravi Nath Mishra on tabla, my good friend Kanhaya Lal Mishra on the sarangi (a violin-type instrument), my good friend Prem Kishor Mishra on the harmonium and vocals, and Ganesh Prasad Mishra on the Indian zyther (owing to his position on the stage, one cannot see him - he is seated behind the harmonium player and singer, and is the musician who produces harp-like or sitar-like downwards arpeggios).

Exploring the issues of art and marriage in India, "In Her Own Footsteps" is the story of Sheeba, a beautiful and talented Indian dancer. Many female artists in India must stop performing after marriage if the husband decides against it. Eighty percent of Indian marriages are arranged, so a female artist may choose not to marry at all, but Sheeba was able to avoid this fate by marrying for love--against her parents wishes. Her husband Manish is a loving man from a different caste and religion who supports Sheeba in dance and in life. Ironically, Sheeba's mother, who taught her everything she knows, was not so lucky in her own marriage to Sheeba's tabla-playing father.Exploring the issues of art and marriage in India, "In Her Own Footsteps" is... more
