Amy Goodman & Two Democracy Now! Producers Arrested At RNC Protest
More than 280 people were arrested here in St. Paul Monday, the opening day of the Republican National Convention. Among them were several journalists covering the protests in the streets—including three of us at Democracy Now. Amy was detained trying to question police officers about the arrests of Democracy Now producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar.

UPDATE
Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar Released After Illegal Arrest at RNC
Goodman Charged with Obstruction; Felony Riot Charges Pending Against Kouddous and Salazar
ST. PAUL–Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar have all been released from police custody in St. Paul following their illegal arrest by Minneapolis Police on Monday afternoon.
All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. Salazar’s violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, “I’m Press! Press!,” resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. Goodman’s arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.

It was a wonderful protest in the heat today as well over 10,000 (I'd guess up to 20,000) people marched from the state capitol to the downtown convention center where the Republican National Convention (RNC) is being held. The march, led by a delegation of people of color and then Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), was warmly cheered by thousands of people who stood along the parade route...

Four blocks of Kellogg Blvd in St. Paul broke into chaos late this afternoon as riot police fired cannisters of chemical agents directly into the crowd. MnIndy’s Jeff Severens Guntzel was there and relayed his account of what happened.
Following an alert about an RNC Welcoming Committee “convergence,” he walked to Kellogg to find four blocks starting at Jackson filled with protesters who were dancing to the Dead Kennedy’s...

Two, totally different interpretations of the world and how it works. The important point however is the ‘explanation’ offered by the BBC is but one expression of the ideological commitment of the corporate/state media to the maintenance of capitalism. Thus the way the BBC ‘explains’ the crisis is essentially identical to the government’s, namely ‘it’s not our fault, it’s a global thing over which we have no control’.
The reality however, is very different. The US, along with the UK via their military and economic control, especially over the financial and oil markets are directly responsible for the current crisis, a crisis compounded by the massive financial fraud perpetrated by the major banks and investment corporations, a fraud that ordinary working people are being forced to pay for.
And the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Over the past thirty years a vast transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich has taken place.

When I arrived yesterday in St. Paul, Minnesota I checked my email to read stories about local police raids on homes of protest organizers. The cops came armed with warrants to search for all kinds of illegal stuff, none of which they found. They cuffed folks and put some in jail for the next week, taking them completely out of things for the upcoming protests here at the Republican National Convention. This is supposed to be a “liberal” state but the opening round of things indicates that when it comes to “Homeland Security” anything goes. Watch this video footage for one of the raids. [see below for video]
This morning the local newspaper carried a story about the raids and explanations by the local authorities that they don’t want a possible “Battle in Seattle” to hurt the local business communities chance to “showcase” the Minneapolis-St. Paul (Twin cities) to the world. So business interests come first and civil liberties second - the local courts can sort out the latter issues in the days, weeks, months, and years after. Right now there is money to be made.

All the talk by the major Western powers of a return to the days of the Cold War must surely be a wake up call to us all as to what is in reality the ultimate expression of a resurgent and I might add, desperate, imperialism, the recreation of its historical enemy for the better part of the 20th century, Russia, but is Russia the object of desire here? I think not, at least not directly, Georgia is yet another piece on the chessboard, the question is, do the Russians want to play and if they do, by whose rules?
War has been for the better part of five centuries the ‘solution’ to capitalism’s woes, indeed wars of aggression over resources and competitors is the norm for the major powers of the West. But for a brief period, less than fifty years following the end of WWII, the existence of a nuclear-armed Soviet Union curbed the inevitable drive toward a major conflagration over markets and the imperative for the accumulation of capital, without which capitalism is a dead duck.

Dennis Kucinich recently delivered a very inspiring speech to the Democratic convention called Wake Up America.
Yes. Wake Up America. Realize that difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is about as much as the difference between Pepsi and Coke. Both Pepsi and Coke are bad for the health. They contribute to the epidemics of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The Democrats and Republicans are both equally as bad for the health of the nation. They routinely overspend, sanction foreign wars that should be no concern of ours, they work together to ship American jobs overseas among many other detrimental items and they continually accept corporate money and provide corporate welfare while 50 million citizen don’t have health care coverage, and are losing their homes (Congress has bailed out the bankers, but can’t seem to bail out the homeowners).

I applaud John McCain’s choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice president nominee. In many ways this choice was far more impressive than Barack Obama’s selection of Joe Biden. Better yet, the McCain selection will make the general election campaign far more interesting and competitive.
I say this on the basis of looking at contradictions that the choices raised. Here we have Obama proclaiming endlessly that he was running against the politics of the past, but then he picks an extremely long term senator that is clearly a member of the status quo establishment. Moreover, Obama has kept boasting that he does not take money from lobbyists, but Biden has taken plenty. And then there is the claim of great judgment by Obama for his opposition to the Iraq war, but Biden played an important role as a Democrat in supporting the Bush war.

A few thoughts on the electoral theatre that is upon us.
First, the most obvious and glaring reality of US politics is that only the very, very rich participate. This single fact really should give one pause, should give everyone who actually works for a living pause. As one old Wobbly put it, there are two kinds of people in the world, those who work and those who don’t.
Now, John McCain, like Kerry, got most of his money via his second wife …. after dumping his first one. Cyndi is a beer heiress, and if McCain were to be elected, and I think he will be, he will the first US president to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement. Anyway, the McCains spend, for household employees, $273,000 (in 2007), according to John McCain’s tax returns. The butler and maid budget for a single year exceeds a decade’s income for most Americans.

A front page article “In Nuclear Net’s Undoing, a Web of Shadowy Deals” in Monday’s New York Times by William Sanger and David Broad details the destruction of evidence by the US government in a case involving the nuclear black market.
The article highlights again that the New York Times continues to engage in ‘Judy Miller reporting’ by warmongering and acting as a mouthpiece for the government.
This is the second article in a multi-part series. This article will focus on the countries involved, and how and why the NY Times continues to act as a government mouthpiece by focusing attention on, and warmongering toward, Iran, and minimizing the role of so-called allies such as Turkey and Dubai. (The first piece of the series focused on the players in the AQ Khan / BSA Tahir nuclear smuggling ring.)
