Vancouver police chief won’t reveal how many cops deployed downtown
It was the anarchists. That’s the story and they’re sticking to it. The spin started early.
While cars burned on Georgia Street, Mayor Gregor Robertson strode into a cluster of cameras and microphones two blocks from the riot epicentre, his face twisted in shock and confusion. “We had a small number of hooligans, basically, on the streets of Vancouver causing problems.”

About 100 police officers from different agencies making up the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System met Thursday at the Joliet Correctional Center for crowd control training.
Officers from many local departments are assigned to ILEAS’ Region 3 Central team.
ILEAS mobile field forces are sent out to assist at big events and incidents that could overwhelm local police. Besides providing additional security at a global economic summit and national political convention, they also respond to natural disasters.
“We just had about 15 members called out two weeks ago to help (deal with) the severe flooding downstate,” said Joliet police Operations Cmdr. Al Roechner.
Thursday’s exercise prepared the officers to deal with a large crowd that turns violent. The closed former prison on Collins Street offered an ideal location.

Anti-government rallies in the capitals of Algeria and Yemen, inspired by events in Egypt, have been broken up.
Riot police in Algiers dispersed thousands of people who had defied a government ban to demand that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika step down.
A similar march in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to leave office was attacked by government supporters.
Egypt's Hosni Mubarak stepped down on Friday after 18 days of mass protests.
Both Yemen and Algeria, like other countries in the region, have recently witnessed demonstrations for greater freedoms and improved living standards.
'Fear broken'
Protesters in Algiers evaded thousands of police who were deployed in and around the capital city ahead of the demonstration.
Public demonstrations are banned in Algeria under a state of emergency in place since 1992.
Anti-government protesters took to the streets of Yemen
The protesters gathered at Algiers' 1 May Square on Saturday morning.
They chanted "Bouteflika out!" - in reference to the country's president, who came to power in 1999.
The heavy police presence prevented them from marching to Martyrs Square, about 5km (3 miles) away. Rights groups said hundreds of people were arrested.
By late in the afternoon only a few hundred people were left in 1 May Square.
But the protest's organisers hailed it as a success.
"We've broken the wall of fear, this is only a beginning," said Fodil Boumala, one of the founders of the National Co-ordination for Change and Democracy.
"The Algerians have won back their capital."
'Ali's turn'
In Yemen, it was supporters of President Saleh, in power since 1978, who forced anti-government protesters from the centre of Sanaa.
Several thousand protesters had gathered chanting: "After Mubarak, it's Ali's turn."
Supporters of the president, armed with traditional Yemeni knives and sticks, turned up and forced the protesters, many of them students, to flee.
It came after protesters celebrating the toppling of Egypt's President Mubarak on Friday night were driven out from Sanaa's Tahrir Square by armed men.Anti-government rallies in the capitals of Algeria and Yemen, inspired by events in... more

The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) is a national trade union centre officially established in 1995. Its predecessor was the National Council of Trade Unions (NCTU), established in 1990 as an independent alternative to the Federation of Korean Trade Unions. With 682,418 members in 2007, the KCTU accounted for 40.6% of trade union members in South Korea.
In 2008, during massive "mad cow protests" the KCTU declared a general strike to protest the import of US beef on grounds that consuming the allegedly tainted beef could damage worker productivity
The KCTU has more than 1,200 affiliated enterprise-level trade unions. It is the second largest trade union national center in South Korea, following the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU). On 1 April 2009, KCTU delegates at a special session elected Lim Seong-kyu as President. Of the two, the KCTU is generally considered to be the more militant.

The city of Los Angeles erupted saturday april 17, 2010 as 40 nazis, 300 police and 2000 counter demonstrators took the streets. What a beautiful day in the neighborhood as the people of Los Angeles showed up to either peacefully or militantly protest this racist convergence in a city that is 70% or more POC (people of color). The city was strategically picked by the nazis (National Socialist Movement - NSM) in order to spread their racist agenda calling for the forceful deportation of ALL PEOPLE NOT OF THE ARYAN RACE, as well as prosecution of race traitors. As they took the lawn (protected by an army of police officers) they tore up a Mexican flag and an Israeli flag and directed childish taunts at the crowd, who, if it weren't for the 300 cops would have proceded to beat some nazi ass.
Two people were beaten by counter demonstrators. One was a man (seemingly homeless or otherwise disenfrancished) who walked FROM THE LAPD HQ across the street to the protest and removed his shirt to reveal a number of rascist and nazi tattoos (swastika, 100% honky, nazi lightning bolts, SS). He was pointed out, surrounded, and pushed back. At some point someone started throwing down and the man was beaten, but not severely. He was able to walk over to the other side under police protection. The fact that he came directly from the LAPD HQ suggests that he was paid off and sent out to incite a riot. This is supported by the fact that as soon as this man was beaten, the cops suited up in FULL RIOT GEAR.
The other man who was beaten was carrying a highly ambiguous sign that said Christianity-->Paganism-->Heathens-->Swastika with flames and "burn in hell" on the bottom. On the back he had two equal rights stickers. This man was apparently mistaken for a nazi and beaten, but not severly. He was able to walk with police escort to the other side.
As far as I know, only one counter protestor was arrested and charged with a felony for beating up the nazi. Some protestors were beaten by the cops with batons. AND IRONICALLY, most of the cops in line were brown or black.
The nazi speakers were drowned out by chants, and run out of town. They are a bunch of ignorant racist cowards. The cops were broken down by the militants and agitators. At least two cops were seen crying. They are a bunch of weak fascist pawns.
So folks, We are a decade into the new millenium and still, we have nazis permitted to spread racists ideologies from the pulpit (ivory tower, LA's city hall). The question is WHY does our country permit and protect HATE SPEECH on such a disgusting level? - DO NOT CONFUSE FREE SPEECH WITH HATE SPEECH!!!!! - Cmon, 300 police army to protect some ignorant rascists spreading violence and hate?? How much did that cost the city of LA?? How many school programs and healthcare programs will be cut to fund this type of police activity? How many more brown and black brothers and sisters will be affected by racialized violence? How many more families will be murdered on the border by minute men? When will the LAPD stand up for the people, not face off with them?? When will the US GOVERNMENT stop perpetuating genocide???
fuck racism. smash the state that perpetuates hate.

Several people were killed and more than 300 were arrested in anti-government protests in Tehran Sunday, Iran's Deputy Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan said on state television station IRINN.
The toll was the result of clashes that broke out between demonstrators and security forces as large crowds gathered for Ashura, a major religious observance.
Five people were reported killed in the fighting, Iranian state-run Press TV said late Sunday. A French government statement put the number of fatalities at eight. With tight restrictions on international media, CNN could not independently verify the casualties.Several people were killed and more than 300 were arrested in anti-government protests... more

Political conflict and public piety converged on tension-filled streets in Tehran, Iran, on Saturday. Clashes erupted between riot police and opposition protesters as hundreds of people solemnly took part in an annual Shiite Muslim observance.
A predominantly Shiite Muslim nation ruled by a Shiite theocracy, Iran remained on the edge as the holy period of Ashura reaches its climax Sunday, when widespread protests are expected to coincide with a day of mourning for a recently deceased cleric who emerged as a champion of opposition protesters.
The opposition demonstrations were the latest to erupt in the Islamic republic since the grassroots outrage over the June presidential elections, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term as president. The election was seen as flawed and protesters took to the streets, with many killed and hurt by security forces and others arrested.Political conflict and public piety converged on tension-filled streets in Tehran,... more

What do you do when you have a bunch of protesters sick of the corrupt governments way of handling situations(like for example, having a meeting on poverty accompanied by a 13 course meal)? well if your the police then you treat them worse than animals.
It's not just the police tactics that need reform, it's their brains!

Oakland police said 18 people were arrested Wednesday night after a peaceful protest of the BART shooting turned violent with a splinter group going on a window-smashing rampage. It was a week ago Wednesday that a similar protest had also turned violent.
Elsewhere, about 50 people were evacuated from their Napa homes Wednesday night after the parents of the arrested ex-officer, Johannes Mehserle, found two suspicious packages on their porch. An Oakland protest over the fatal shooting of an unarmed man on a train platform by Bay Area Rapid Transit police turned violent Wednesday night, with fires set, cars vandalized, and windows smashed - just hours after the officer who fired the deadly shot resigned.
[Update 1/10/09]
This shouldn't have happened. It doesn't solve the problem and this is a BART policeman who did this not the Oakland Police nor the Oakland citizens who got their windows smashed and cars ruined by fire. Unnecessary. The day after the riot, the family and friends of Oscar Grant pleas the "protesters" to stop the violence during a news conference.
California Attorney General Jerry Brown on Saturday dispatched a state prosecutor to monitor Alameda County's investigation into the New Year's Day slaying of the unarmed man by a transit police officer that was recorded on videotape.
Here is the link of the updates including Jerry Brown talking about the investigation and how the riot affected residents and business in Downtown Oakland:

Through a campaign of direct action, legal pressure, and media advocacy, we won Erik's job back. On August 31st, the IWW held a rally to celebrate the union victory. After the rally, union supporters accompanied Erik Forman to his first shift back at the Mall of America. Things did not go as planned.

The stand off with riot police and uniformed veteran made for an ironic image.
