LONDON — Britain’s News of the World tabloid will print its last ever edition on Sunday following a scandal over phone hacking, owner Rupert Murdoch’s son James Murdoch said Thursday.
“Having consulted senior colleagues, I have decided that we must take further decisive action with respect to the paper. This Sunday will be the last issue of the News of the World,” Murdoch, the chairman of News International, said in a statement.
He said that if allegations that a private investigator working for the 168-year-old Sunday tabloid hacked the voicemail of a teenage girl who was later found murdered were true, they were “inhuman.”
“The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself,” he added.
“Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued.”
James Murdoch said the conviction in 2007 for phone hacking of the paper’s royal correspondent Clive Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire had failed to cure the problem.
“The News of the World and News International failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing that occurred without conscience or legitimate purpose.”
He added that any advertising space in the final edition would be donated “to causes and charities that wish to expose their good works to our millions of readers.

WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Ranking Member Susan Collins, R-Me., and Senator Tom Carper, D-Del., issued the following statement Tuesday about the Internet shut down in Egypt and pending cybersecurity legislation that would protect the U.S. from cyber attacks.
“The steps the Mubarak government took last week to shut down Internet communications in Egypt were, and are, totally wrong. His actions were clearly designed to limit internal criticisms of his government. Our cybersecurity legislation is intended to protect the U.S. from external cyber attacks. Yet, some have suggested that our legislation would empower the President to deny U.S. citizens access to the Internet. Nothing could be further from the truth.
“We would never sign on to legislation that authorized the President, or anyone else, to shut down the Internet. Emergency or no, the exercise of such broad authority would be an affront to our Constitution.
“But our current laws do give us reason to be concerned. Most important, under current law, in the event of a cyber attack, the President’s authorities are broad and ambiguous – a recipe for encroachments on privacy and civil liberties.
“For example, in the event of a war or threat of war, the Communications Act of 1934 authorizes the President to take over or shut down wire and radio communications providers. This law is a crude sledgehammer built for another time and technology. Our bill contains a number of protections to make sure that broad authority is not used.
“First, the emergency measures in our bill apply in a precise and targeted way only to our most critical infrastructure – the networks and assets most essential to the functioning of society and the economy – to ensure they are protected from destruction.
“Second, our legislation specifically says the President can only invoke the emergency authorities “if there is an ongoing or imminent” attack that would “cause national or regional catastrophic effects” by the disruption of the nation’s most critical infrastructure. The legislative language defines “national or regional catastrophic effects” as, among other things, “a mass casualty event which includes an extraordinary number of fatalities” and “mass evacuations with a prolonged absence.”
“Third, any measures ordered by the President must be “the least disruptive means feasible.”
“Fourth, when invoking these authorities, the President must notify Congress, and the emergency measures cannot be continued beyond 120 days without congressional approval.
“Fifth, the legislation expressly forbids any action that would violate the First Amendment and also prohibits limiting internet traffic, emails, and other forms of communication (except those between critical infrastructure providers) unless no other action would prevent a regional or national catastrophe.
“Our bill already contains protections to prevent the President from denying Americans access to the Internet - even as it provides ample authority to ensure that those most critical services that rely on the Internet are protected. And, even though experts question whether anyone can technically ‘shut down’ the Internet in the United States, we will ensure that any legislation that moves in this Congress contains explicit language prohibiting the President from doing what President Mubarak did.WASHINGTON – Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe... more

Today, Egypt has seen tremendous anti-Mubarak protests. In retaliation, the Egyptian government is doing what governments all-too-often do, blocking, cutting, filtering. Specifically, Twitter is blocked in Egypt.
Massive Protests
These unprecedented protests centered on Cairo - massive in scope with as many as 100,000 participants - and the simultaneous use of Twitter as a communications tool, has resulted in #cairo trending. In a vain attempt to stop the protests by stopping the service used to report them, Mubarak's government has blocked the use of the site.
Some are still Twittering inside the country via proxies and Tor. More seem to be using the "We are all Khaled Said" Facebook page. (Said was a young victim of police violence who was killed last year in Alexandria.)
"Tahrir square now. We own it now. Police can only watch from a distance."
Twitter appears to have created an account to talk specifically about Egypt's use of the tool, though it's small beer indeed compared to what the Egyptians are doing on their own. No surprise there. Who's most invested after all?
Mobile phone service, Internet access in general and news sites are reportedly, if sporadically, being interrupted or filtered.
Background, Ongoing Reports
The protests actually began, Foreign Policy reported, as a reaction against Police Day, "a much-unloved national holiday originally intended to honor cops in the city of Ismailia who stood against the British invasion of 1952. In recent years, it's become a potent symbol of everything that's wrong with Egypt under the rule of Hosni Mubarak."
Ahmed Zidan, the editor of MideastYouth Arabic in Egypt, sent us a note in the midst of the events unfolding in Cairo.
"Protesters have used a new tactic, which is several separated groups of massive protesters across Cairo and other Egyptian provinces. This tactic has distracted the police forces.
Twitter was the main way of communication between all protesters, and it was only the main and most vital news update to everyone worldwide through #Jan25 and #Cairo hashtags. However, the Egyptian authorities have blocked it! The demos and its news didn't stop to flood, but Twitter blockade has caused shortage of news, especially from inside the demos. Well, all the mobile and internet communications is totally blocked in Down Town area in Cairo, plus Twitter blockade across Egypt has affected the feeds of the protests, but from my POV, that will cause more riots, because the government has violated freedom of speech, just like Tunisia in the past. This will backfire at the government indeed.
The state driven oligopolistic, namely private, ISPs and mobile networks have shown their ugly faces by obeying the government's orders! This is the worst scenario anyone can imagine."
Zidan has published a timeline of events on MideastYouth
Updates
We will continue to keep an eye on the situation in Egypt, especially, though not solely, as it pertains to the technology being employed.
The protests have reportedly seen violence. The first death appears to be of a 20-year-old man from Suez named Mustafa Reda Mahmoud Abdelfattah.
Rumors have started that Mubarak's son and family have fled Egypt. Unconfirmed.
Video is being steadily uploaded as the protests progress.
Multiple reports coming in that most Arab press are ignoring the protests. Confirm?
Second Suez victim, Suliman Saber Ali.
A policeman is said to have been killed in Cairo.
Protesters detained and transported to Cairo's Al-Salam military jail.
Reports are coming in that protesters are expecting a block on Facebook soon.
Interior Minister Habib Al-Adly said to have instructed police to fire on protesters if they do not disperse.

(NaturalNews) At the Bakersfield airport in California, TSA authorities recently shut down the entire airport after finding what they thought was a container of liquid explosives.
Luggage screeners discovered five Gatorade bottles full of an "amber" liquid. TSA agents then opened the bottles and complained they smelled "a strong chemical odor." They then complained of nausea and were taken to the local hospital for treatment.
According to Reuters, "Kern County Sheriffs deputies, fire crews, FBI agents and members of a joint terrorism task force responded to the scene and spent the day questioning Ramirez before further tests showed that the liquid was honey."
In other words, Ramirez was interrogated by the FBI for hours while being presumed to be a terrorist. (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUS...)
And then it turned out the "explosive amber liquid" was just HONEY.
Apparently, TSA employees are so unbelievably retarded that they don't even know what honey smells like or looks like. When they smell honey, they mistakenly believe they're under a chemical attack! And then they engage in all sorts of theater by acting like they're experiencing nausea so that they can be carted off to the hospital and take the rest of the work day off.
These are the people who are supposed to be protecting America from highly-motivated, highly-intelligent terrorists? Give me a break...
The TSA can't catch actual terrorists, but it's really good at flagging innocent people as terrorists and wasting thousands of hours of time (and millions of dollars for the airlines) declaring bogus terrorists emergencies that only serve to inconvenience everyone.
Chemical detection tests are bogus
What the TSA hasn't yet acknowledged is that their chemical detection tests are complete quackery.
As we've reported before, a bottle of Dr. Bronner's soap will test positive for illegal narcotics. A bar of home-made chocolate got Ron and Nadine from Living Libations arrested (and their child stolen from them by authorities) and accused of trafficking illegal drugs (http://www.naturalnews.com/024304.html).
Honey now apparently tests positive for explosives. Is there any food or liquid substance that truly safe from being declared a bomb by incompetent TSA employees?
It's fairly obvious at this point that the real mission of the TSA has nothing to do with security. It has everything to do with brainwashing Americans to surrender to police state searches while living in a never-ending state of extreme fear. The TSA, in other words, is just a vehicle by which Americans can be programmed to kow-tow to the herd mentality.
And then they ratchet up the invasions of your privacy one step at a time. First it's just asking you to throw away your water, then later they ask you to start taking off your shoes and belts. Before long, you're scanned with a full body scanner that shows you body completely naked -- nipples, penises, crotches and all -- while TSA agents get off on their power trip.
The TSA wants you to believe that high levels of detail are not possible with their full-body scanners. But as you can clearly see here, this technology reveals breasts and genitalia. The images they release to the public are intentionally blurred and offered a low resolution in order to create the false impression that TSA agents can't really see anything. But if they can't see anything, what good is the technology?(NaturalNews) At the Bakersfield airport in California, TSA authorities recently shut... more
