DiCaprio And Inception Co-stars Trash BP, Cheney And Palin

The cast of Christopher Nolan’s just-released blockbuster Inception gave some surprisingly political answers to questions at a press junket recently. While promoting the mind-bending action film which posits many interesting ideas like shared dreams, stealing ideas from people’s subconscious, and how having your mind haunted by a sexy French woman isn’t always a good thing, the cast was asked whose dreams they would like to infiltrate. Cue the Sarah Palin bashing.

First up was Leonardo DiCaprio who chose BP exec Tony Hayward, an unsurprising choice considering he’s a well known environmentalist. Next up were Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. Page used her answer to go off on Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin. At first she seemed like she was only semi-serious, wearing a smirk sort of like the one she wore in the funny parts of Juno. But, the more she talked about Palin, the more serious she got and her expression changed a scowl sort of like the one she wore in the sad parts of Juno.

Now, before all of you Palin fans get out your “Hollyweird” pitchforks, I think the actors should at least be commended for giving thoughtful answers to such a stupid question when they probably just want to start screaming, “Oh my God, who cares whose dreams we’d want to go in?! I’ve been sitting in this stupid press junket chair for eight hours! Just go see my movie, it’s got pretty special effects in it! I promise!” And, besides, their answers do inspire us to imagine what kind of dreams those three public figures would have. I imagine Hayward’s would probably involve a bunch of people calmly telling him, “Don’t worry, we never liked the Gulf of Mexico that much anyway,” while Palin’s presumably features her flying around on a helicopter and hunting Katie Couric, Dave Letterman, and her future son-in-law from above.

As for Cheney’s dreams, I don’t even want to imagine. Mostly because I think they’d be creepy, but also because Phillip K. Dick already asked the most relevant question 40 years ago.The cast of Christopher Nolan’s just-released blockbuster Inception gave some... more

Palin Says Rand Paul Was Victim of 'Gotcha' Moment

Sarah Palin said Sunday that Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul, who stirred controversy last week over his views on federal enforcement of civil rights, was the victim of the same kind of "gotcha" moment from a hostile press that she encountered during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Paul, a libertarian and Tea Party favorite who won the GOP nomination in Kentucky on Tuesday, had prompted a political ruckus when he appeared to question whether private businesses should have to abide by federal civil rights law provisions prohibiting discrimination when it came to who they did or did not serve. Paul made his comments in an interview on the Rachel Maddow show.

Paul issued a clarification a day later, saying it was in response to "liberal media attacks. "I unequivocally state that I will not support any efforts to repeal the Civil Rights Act of 1964," the statement said.

Paul canceled a planned appearance on Sunday's Meet the Press.

Palin and Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, both appearing on Fox News Sunday, portrayed Paul's remarks as more of a philosophical reflection on the issue of limited government and individual rights, and said his clarification made clear his support for the law.

"One thing that we can learn in this lesson that I have learned, and Rand Paul is learning now, is don't assume that you can engage in a hypothetical discussion about constitutional impacts with a reporter or a media personality who has an agenda," Palin said.

"You know, they're looking for that 'gotcha' moment. And that's what it evidently appears to be that they did with Rand Paul, but I'm thankful that he was able to clarify his answer about his support for the Civil Rights Act."

Steele said on ABC's This Week that he had talked to Paul and that Paul "as United States senator will be four-square with the Republican Party, in lockstep with moving forward on civil rights, not looking backwards."

But on Fox, he took a less charitable view than Palin about how Rand landed in the controversy.

Referring to his libertarianism, Steele said, "I think his philosophy is misplaced in these times. I don't think it's where the country is right now."

"But I think in this case Rand Paul's philosophy got in the way of reality," Steele said. "And the reality of it is that was important legislation at the time that put in place important benchmarks for the progress of free people. And I think, as he said, he stands foursquare with the party on this issue, but he had a philosophical difference, as many members who come to Congress have ...But when you get here, what you do and how you execute the job is what matters. Whatever ultimate political effect that Tea Party conservatism has on the country, one thing is increasingly clear: Being a high-profile leader of the small-government movement is very big business.

The movement's popular appeal stems from grass-roots outrage over the bailout of America's financial system, the expanded role of government, and the growing deficits. But the Tea Party has also been aggressively promoted by conservative media, political leaders and advocacy groups — and its broad appeal has blurred the distinctions among the three.

A year into this fledgling political movement's life, reports are emerging of the huge money being made by Tea Party leaders. Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are in front of the pack, but a few new faces and a few old faces are also getting into the game.

Hypocrisy to the highest degree, the teabaggers are jumping up and down, faces red with rage and raising clenched fists at governmental spending. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, they rush to donate money to this, their darling movement (cult) and buy up Tea Party goodies, as quickly as they hit the retail shelves just to hear their leaders Palin, Beck, et al, spew forth hyperbolic propaganda and lies (misleading or outright mendacity). Their motto TAKE AMERICA BACK... Yeah, back to the way it was before the Civil War. Wake up teabaggers you’re not Southern, you’re AMERICAN and the only thing the leaders of your movement are looking for is their bottom-line! thinkingblue
