Sarah Palin: Don't pick on Donald Trump

Even though Donald Trump has wholeheartedly embraced the wall-to-wall media coverage that’s come with his promotion of the widely discredited “birther” issue, Sarah Palin argued Tuesday that the press is treating him “unfairly” by focusing mostly on his doubts about President Barack Obama’s birthplace.

Palin, who’s been trading kind words with Trump in recent days, said on Fox News that the real estate mogul isn’t pushing the birther issue and would talk about more substantial issues — if only the press would let him. Reporters, she said, are “hammering [Trump] about the one issue that he has brought up and not been shy about — that's the birth certificate. ... He's answering reporters' questions about his view on the birth certificate. And reporters turn that around and say that's all he's got.

“That's not the case,” she added. “Trump is running on the issue, bottom line, that President Obama is in so far over his head.”

Palin, wearing a Jewish Star of David around her neck on the second night of Passover, did not at any point provide an explicit answer on whether she thinks Trump is right or wrong in doubting the president’s birthplace — and was not asked by an adoring Sean Hannity. But she’s voiced support for his taking up the issue before.

The former Alaska governor also credited Trump with speaking to tea party activists (he attended a tax day tea party rally in Florida last weekend). And when she mapped out the kind of candidate she’d like to see campaigning for president in 2012 — without saying if she’s leaning toward a run — Trump seemed to fit her requirements.

“We need to fight so hard going into 2012 to get somebody elected who has executive experience — who hasn't been part of this herd mentality of trying to manage the public,” Palin said.

Asked directly how close she is to making her own decision about a White House bid, Palin said it was “still too early” and that forming an exploratory committee “isn’t even on the radar.”

“I’ve never really run for anything conventionally over the last couple of decades,” she said. “I’ve jumped in and done it when I’ve known that it is the right thing.”

Palin inspired symbols of hate turn up in Canada.

Disturbing graffiti has turned up on Liberal campaign posters in an Ottawa-area riding, stirring up parallels to the anti-politician rhetoric that became an issue in the U.S. earlier this year.

More than 100 signs for Ryan Keon, the Liberal candidate in Nepean-Carleton, were spray-painted Friday night with rifle-target symbols over Keon’s face, as well as “graphic and explicit” messages, according to the campaign team.

In Tucson in January, a gunman trying to kill Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords opened fire in a supermarket — a rampage that left six dead, 13 injured and Giffords critically injured with a gunshot wound to the head.

In the aftermath, some drew a direct connection between the attack and the anti-politician rhetoric that was being whipped up by Sarah Palin, former Republican vice-presidential candidate and now a star of the Tea Party movement. Shortly before the Tucson attack, Palin had included Gifford’s face in an ad that drew rifle crosshairs on politicians’ faces, with the slogan: “Don’t retreat, reload.”

The vandals who spray-painted the target signs on Keon’s face this past weekend also scrawled epithets denouncing Liberals and “tree huggers.”

This is the REAL legacy of Sarah Palin. This is what she has helped to usher onto the political stage in America, that has now bled over into the lives of our Canadian neighbors.

She may be a joke, but she is also becoming a symbol of hate and partisanship in the world.

Whether it be the anti-Muslim sentiment in this country, the hatred directed toward our President, or the vilification of progressive politicians , all of these extreme positions are fairly covered with Palin fingerprints. She may not have been the originator but, just like the "Drill Baby, Drill," "Death Panels," and the "Obama pals around with terrorists" memes, she is the one to push divisive talking points until they spread like a plague, first throughout our country, and then throughout the world.

If this hateful creature is not convinced to sit down and shut up soon, I see day when anarchists will drop the use of Hitler as a symbol of their anti-societal stance, and instead embrace the likeness of Sarah Louise Palin, as the mother of American domestic terrorism. You just mark my words.

We have successfully managed to stop the political candidate, but how do we stop the symbol? (And before anybody suggests it, no, violence is not the answer!)

The union-led school closures and demonstrations in Madison have left most ordinary Americans shaking their heads in disbelief. Months ago, I penned a message to my fellow union brothers and sisters when I found myself on the receiving end of union boss Richard Trumka’s wrath. Yesterday’s demonstrations reminded me of the full-page ads taken out against me when I put my foot down in dealing with union demands while I served as governor. My message then and now to good union brothers and sisters is that you have another option. You don’t have to kowtow to the union bosses who are not looking out for you, but instead are using you. You can join millions of other union members in a commonsense movement to help fight for the right causes in our great country – for budgets that share the burden in a truly fair way and for commonsense reforms that take power away from vested interests like union bosses and big business lobby groups, and put it back where it belongs – with “We the People.”

Here we are still struggling to get out of a deep recession and coping with high unemployment, record deficits, rapidly rising food prices, and a host of other economic problems; and Wisconsin union bosses want union members out in the streets demanding that taxpayers foot the bill for unsustainable benefits packages. I am a friend to hard working union members and to teachers. I come from a family of teachers; my grandparents, parents, brother, sister, aunt, and other relatives worked, or still work, in education. My own children attend public schools. I greatly admire good teachers and will always speak up in defense of the teaching profession. But Wisconsin teacher unions do themselves no favor by closing down classrooms and abandoning children’s needs in protest against the sort of belt-tightening that people everywhere are going through. Union brothers and sisters: this is the wrong fight at the wrong time. Solidarity doesn’t mean making Wisconsin taxpayers pay for benefits that are not sustainable and affordable at a time when many of these taxpayers struggle to hold on to their own jobs and homes. Real solidarity means everyone being willing to sacrifice and carry our share of the burden. It does no one any favors to dismiss the sacrifices others have already had to make—in wage cuts, unpaid vacations, and even job losses—to weather our economic storm.

Hard working, patriotic, and selfless union brothers and sisters: please don’t be taken in by the union bosses. At the end of the day, they’re not fighting for your pension or health care plan or even for the sustainability of Wisconsin’s education budget. They’re fighting to protect their own powerful privileges and their own political clout. The agenda for too many union bosses is a big government agenda that only serves the union bosses themselves – not union members, not union families, and certainly not the larger community. Everybody else is just there to foot the bill; and if that bill eventually takes the form of thousands of teachers and other public sector workers losing their jobs because the state of Wisconsin can no longer afford to keep them on the payroll, that’s a risk the union bosses are willing to take as long as their positions are secure. Union brothers and sisters: you are better than this and you deserve better. Don’t be led astray.

One final word of warning to my fellow Americans: back in 2009, I warned about what would happen if states accepted short-term unsustainable debt-ridden “Stimulus Package” funds. Accepting those funds allowed states to grow government, increase already unsustainable levels of spending, kick the can down the road on reforming entitlements, and create public expectations that they would continue financing these new mandates once the federal funds ran out. States were not in a position to grow government and take on new financial commitments then, and now the chickens have come home to roost. As goes Wisconsin today, so goes the country tomorrow.

Why Ignore Sarah Palin?

Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank has gotten so tired of reading his own articles about Sarah Palin that he's proposing a "Palin-Free February" of news coverage.

You can join him by taking a Twitter pledge! But why?

Milbank follows the New York Times' Ross Douthat in wishing that everyone would just stop talking and typing about Sarah Palin, and maybe she'll go away, because she's not very important to begin with. He writes:

Palin clearly isn't going away: "I am not going to sit down. I'm not going to shut up," she told Hannity on Monday. But if we treat her a little less like a major political figure and a little more like Ann Coulter - a calculating individual who says shocking things to attract media attention - it won't matter. Sure, we might lose some Web traffic or TV ratings, but we might also gain something. Remember the "Seinfeld" episode where George Costanza, by giving up sex, suddenly frees up brain power to learn Portuguese and Euclidean geometry, to teach Derek Jeter the physics of batting, to become a "Jeopardy" whiz and to solve a Rubik's cube? If we stop obsessing over Palin, we might suddenly become experts in the federal budget or Medicare reimbursement rates.

He could always learn about the federal budget or Medicare reimbursement rates in between the times that Sarah Palin makes newsworthy comments. In fact, some people have been making efforts to understand important policy issues better in the last two years, even with Sarah Palin around.

You can't make Sarah Palin into an Ann Coulter, who doesn't get as much attention as she used to. Because Palin, unlike Coulter, was nominated for vice president of the United States in the last election! This is why so many people write and talk about her with amazement over every little thing. The coverage goes over the top sometimes, sure. But it's stunning that a person who got that close to the number-two position in a presidential administration speaks and acts the way that she does—and now she's one of the top Republican candidates for president in 2012!

Why in hell would journalists make a pact to stop talking about a leading contender for president when she may launch her campaign? It's because they're embarrassed about over-covering her for the past 2.5 years while treating her as a viable politician, and now they want to hide the wreckage just as it's morphing into a presidential exploratory committee.

Don't write about her if she does nothing worth writing about; do write about her if she does something worth writing about. Those will be our guidelines during the next month, while Dana Milbank sits on his hands and forces himself to read about Medicare reimbursement rates.
