When presidents enter the White House, they have approximately 100 days to show what they are made of.
The notion of the first "hundred days" as a way to evaluate presidents is an artificial creation that took hold after Franklin Roosevelt became president in 1932 in the Great Depression. But it has become a benchmark for evaluating the early success of a president.
The term is more than symbolic. Some presidents have been able to do a lot with those hundred days. Not surprisingly, Roosevelt was the most successful we have seen. His hundred days lasted from March 9 to June 16, 1933, and Congress passed 15 major bills.
Roosevelt, in a period of experimental genius, found support from Congress for a series of programs to help stabilize an economy where 25 percent of the work force was unemployed and banks were imploding as panicked citizens pulled out their money.
The humorist Will Rogers joked that "Congress doesn't pass legislation any more, they just wave at the bills as they go by," though in reality Democratic leaders were instrumental in initiating many of the ideas that came from the White House and making sure that they passed by sound margins.
Roosevelt understood that he had a limited window of opportunity after his election, and he moved fast. "I do not see how any living soul can last physically going the pace that he is going," said Hiram Johnson, "and mentally any one of us would be a psychopathic case if we undertook to do what he is doing."
Over the hundred days, Democrats remade the face of the federal government. Programs were created to regulate Wall Street and banking, support agriculture and labor, provide public works employment, regulate production and more.
Through the legislation, as well as his historic fireside chats, Roosevelt restored confidence in the government itself, as Americans sensed that Washington could save American capitalism. He also used the first months to overcome the many divisions that existed within the Democratic Party.
Lyndon Johnson had a very different kind of hundred days when he took over after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963. Johnson used his hundred days to define his presidency in relation to his predecessor.
Kennedy had encountered considerable trouble passing most of his legislative agenda, including civil rights and tax cuts, because a conservative coalition of Southern Democrats and Republicans blocked his proposals.
Johnson believed that in the months after the assassination, he needed to link himself to the deceased president, who seemed to become more popular after his death, and he used that connection to build political support for his bills. This is why Johnson retained the services of many Cabinet officials from the Kennedy administration.
"I needed that White House staff," Johnson recalled, "Without them I would have lost my link to John Kennedy, and without that I would have had absolutely no chance of gaining the support of the media or the Easterners or the intellectuals. And without that support I would have had absolutely no chance of governing the country."
During his first speech to Congress after the assassination, Johnson invoked the memory of the slain president by asking legislators to help him fulfill the unfinished agenda.
Calling Kennedy "the greatest leader of our time," Johnson said to Congress, "Let us continue." The memory of Kennedy helped him succeed in passing legislation on civil rights, tax cuts and the War on Poverty.
Yet another way to use 100 days is to undermine your partisan opposition in Congress. Ronald Reagan did this masterfully when pushing for his across-the-board tax cut in 1981, a centerpiece of his domestic agenda. Reagan argued that tax cuts would stimulate economic growth.

Please watch the Center for Biological Diversity's newly released television ads about saving the polar bear.
Polar bears are dying and will soon be wiped out entirely if we don’t take immediate action to curb global warming.
Please sign the petition below and pass it on to a friend.
With your help we’ll reach our goal to get 50,000 signatures below and send a strong message to President Obama in the first 100 days of his presidency.
Global warming is rapidly melting the sea ice polar bears depend on. Accounts of bears starving and drowning are on the rise as they are forced to swim farther and farther to reach the solid ice they need for hunting and resting. Some bears are even turning to cannibalism in a desperate search for food. Those trapped on land hundreds of miles from the nearest ice are often shot as they wander, starving, near villages.
And, as if things weren’t bad enough already, pollution from oil and gas drilling threatens to destroy what’s left of the polar bear’s disappearing habitat.
If current trends continue, two thirds of all polar bears — including all bears in Alaska — will be extinct by 2050, and the rest of the species will be gone forever by the end of the century.
But we can save them by joining together to take immediate action. The science is clear. We know what needs to be done — we just need to build the political support to make it happen.
Please help us gather 50,000 signatures on the petition below in President Obama’s first 100 days to encourage him to rein in global warming and save the polar bear. Please watch the Center for Biological Diversity's newly released television ads... more

An Open Letter to President Obama
Dear President Obama,
With your inauguration behind us, I would like to share with you one very specific hope (and a corollary fear) I have. Although I did not support your candidacy, throughout the Presidential campaign, I greatly admired your rhetoric on race and race relations.
As the first "hapa" U.S. President, you and I share the experience of struggling with the idea of whether or not we were "half" this or "half" that, or a "whole" something else. I believe the answer we both arrived at is that we are "whole" people. beyond "black" and "white." We are both simply "human."
One of the primary reasons I opposed your candidacy was your support for the Akaka Bill, aka the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act. You spoke on the floor before a cloture vote on the Akaka Bill put forth by both Senators Dan Inouye and Dan Akaka, and acting as the "third Hawaiian Senator," you spoke in strong support of their bill.
This, despite the fact the Akaka Bill promises to divide our homeland, the State of Hawaii, into two governments solely on the basis of race. I imagine your support of the Akaka Bill was politically expedient, and I hope it was not based on a thoughtful contemplation of the issue. An Open Letter to President Obama

In a traditional game of political whack-a-mole, the Obama White House has moved quickly to freeze all pending regulations proposed by the former president's administration, including president Bush's attempts to roll back large swathes of environmental legislation.
President Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel issued a memo on inauguration day warning federal agencies not to send proposed or final regulations to the Office of the Federal Register for publication. The Oval Office is to review each of them first.
The White House memo also gives the president's designates the chance to re-evaluate rules that have already been published in the federal register, but which agencies have not yet brought into effect.
Last-minute rules, known as midnight regulations, are common when one administration leaves office. The Bush administration was working on a swathe of regulations in the run-up to the transition, many of which carried an environmental impact.
For example, on Tuesday, as president Obama took office, a rule exempting factory farms from reporting pollution emissions from animal waste came into effect. It had been finalised on 18 December. In a traditional game of political whack-a-mole, the Obama White House has moved... more

CAIRO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has taken the Middle East by surprise with the speed of his diplomacy but his first statement on the conflict between Arabs and Israelis was strikingly similar to old U.S. policies.
Arab leaders in the meantime are jumping in with their own proposals in the hope of helping to shape U.S. policy before the new administration sets it in stone.
Arab governments and commentators had expected Obama to take his time before turning his attention to the Middle East, concentrating instead on the U.S. economy and domestic concerns.

Obama swears in a second time because many people were questioning the validity of his swearing-in because of a fluffed line in the oath of office. Obama decided to quash all speculation of his presidency by doing the oath over with John Roberts, the Chief of Justice.
The only problem was that no one had thought to bring a bible, but Obama decided to go ahead without one anyway. Legally, this was fine because the Constitution makes no mention of the Bible.
Do you think that because there was no bible, Obama might be hurt politically? To some it may be a minor detail that will be overlooked, but to others it may be a huge deal!
Do you think he'll do it one more time so that people would shut up...if a group of people do say something about it?

HE may be the first black President, but Barack Obama is just the latest in a long line of left-handed presidents to grace the White House.
Historically, left-handedness has been associated with being clumsy and, in medieval times, even evil.
The English word “sinister” derives from the Latin word for “left”, while in Victorian times schoolchildren who used their left hand were forced to tie it behind their back until they became right-handed.
However, Bill Clinton, George H W Bush, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford were all left-handed, showing that being a “southpaw” could be a key attribute when it comes to making it to the Oval Office.
In fact, since 1974, Jimmy Carter and George W Bush have been the only right-handed politicians to have made it to the White House.
Closer to home here in Wales, Southpaw boxer Joe Calzaghe is our most successful left-handed export and, according to his father and trainer Enzo, his left-handed jab has been crucial to his undefeated record.
Even so, one Californian academic has found that being left-handed has its downfalls.
His research discovered that the average lefty died at 66, while his right-hand counterpart lived until 75.
The study claimed that over the age of 33, the chance of a left-hander dying was one to 2% higher than for a right-hander.
Part of the reason was that lefties were far more prone to accidents.
But their higher death rate is not all down to clumsiness.
A study of 12,000 healthy women in Holland showed that left-handers were twice as likely to develop breast cancer – possibly because of exposure to excessive testosterone in their mother’s womb
But as the White House roll call suggests, it can’t all be bad news.
Numerous studies have pointed out that so-called “lefties” are generally more gifted at sport and quicker thinking than their right-handed counterparts.HE may be the first black President, but Barack Obama is just the latest in a long... more

We have all seen the News Media comparing Barack Obama to both Abraham Lincoln and John Fitzgerald Kennedy. We have been bombarded by the collector coin ads of Obama’s face painted over both Lincoln face on the penny and JFK’s on the half dollar.
Why choose those two presidents?
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President, a republican, self educated, from the state of Illinois and assassinated on Apr. 14, 1865, while still in office.
John F. Kennedy was the 35th President, a Democrat, Harvard educated, a war hero, became president at age 43, from the state of Massachusetts and assassinated on November 22, 1963, while still in office
Barack Hussein Obama II will be the 44th President, a Democrat, Harvard educated, from the State of Illinois and 47 years old at time of election.
Obama – Lincoln: both from state of Illinois and both tall.
Obama – Kennedy: both in 40s when they took office, both Harvard Educated and both charismatic.
The only statistical connection between Kennedy and Lincoln is they were both assassinated in office. I fear that is the connection that the News Media and the merchandisers are looking to see President Obama added to. The thought of the assassination of President Obama is horrific because unlike in the past when America went into mourning at the death of a President, I believe we will see riots in the streets if not a full blown civil war. Sadly the election of 2008 opened many old wounds between the races as the race card was played repeatedly. It also laid the groundwork for a class war because it became acceptable to have wealth redistribution which simply put is the concept that it is ok to take from the rich and give to the poor.
It is my belief that history should judge President Barack Obama based on his actions as President, not race or whom the News Media want to compare him too.We have all seen the News Media comparing Barack Obama to both Abraham Lincoln and... more

Up until now, Pepsi's international advertising conjured up images of celebrities, humour and story lines which involved protagonists going to great lengths to get a Pepsi. It was all about the drink. Nothing inherently wrong with that - it was instrumental in Pepsi being where it is. TBWA, who replaced BBDO recently as the agency, has devised a campaign which is more about people's sentiments & mood rather than about selling a cola. (CNN) -- Jamaal Young was watching Barack Obama and his family greet an ecstatic crowd in Chicago, Illinois, on Election Night when he realized that something seemed wrong.
Obama didn't shout at his wife, Michelle, to shut up. The first lady didn't roll her eyes and tell Obama to act like a man. No laugh track kicked in, no one danced, and no police sirens wailed in the background.
Young had tuned in to celebrate the election of the nation's first African-American president. But he realized that he was witnessing another historic first. A black family was being featured as the first family, not the "problem family" or the "funny family.
"They are not here to entertain us," says Young, a New York Press columnist. "Michelle Obama is not sitting around with her girlfriends saying, 'My man ain't no good.' You're not seeing this over -sexualized, crazy black family that, every time a Marvin Gaye song comes on, someone stands up and says, 'Oh girl, that's my jam.' "
The nation didn't just get a glimpse of its new first family when Obama and his family waved to the crowds on Inauguration Day. The Obamas are offering America a new way to look at the black family, Young and other commentators say.
America has often viewed the black family through the prism of its pathologies: single-family homes, absentee fathers, out of wedlock children, they say. Or they've turned to the black family for comic relief in television shows such as "Good Times" in the '70s or today's "House of Payne."
But a black first family changes that script, some say. A global audience will now be fed images of a highly educated, loving and photogenic black family living in the White House for the next four years -- and it can't go off the air like "The Cosby Show."(CNN) -- Jamaal Young was watching Barack Obama and his family greet an ecstatic crowd... more

This week is when 99% of everything written on the internet starts with some variant of "Obama should..." and I'm such a conformist, I don't want to be any different. So here's my contribution: What Obama should do ASAP is appoint an Ambassador to Moronia.
Where is Moronia? You won't find it on any map, in the same way you won't find Funkytown, The Nation of Islam, or The State of Confusion in any atlas. Though it sounds like a physical place, Moronia isn't defined by a landmass covered with invisible lines that tempt humans to kill those living on the opposite side of those lines.
As you probably have figured out (if you haven't, you may be a citizen!) Moronia is The Nation of Morons.
