You gotta wonder why there are gay rethuglicans given that much of what happens in their personal lives would be made illegal if they get their way politically. Kind of like slaves fighting for the Confederacy. And yes, there were slaves that took up arms for the Confederacy in exchange for the promise of freedom. Yeah, I know, bizarro. You gotta wonder why there are gay rethuglicans given that much of what happens in... more

Republican Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Monday that the government should not be telling churches who can and can’t get married.
Babeu, an emerging Republican figure and strong border defense sheriff, resigned from his position as Arizona co-chairman of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign on Saturday afternoon amid allegations of threatening to deport a former male lover.
“This is where I go Ron Paul on people,” Babeu told Blitzer. “I believe in less government at the federal level. They should get out of people’s lives. Unless its an enumerated power in the Constitution, it falls to the states. This is where it falls to the states.”
“I can tell you my personal belief and my political belief is I believe in freedom of religion, and there are faiths and religions that our government shouldn’t get involved in that absolutely do not condone gay marriage,” he continued. “The government should tell those faiths and those religions that they have to. At the same time, I don’t believe they should tell other faiths that they can’t. This is where our government needs to get the heck out of the way.
“If it is not harming somebody else, then what does it matter? You can’t legislate love.”
Babeu is also running for the U.S. House in Arizona’s new 4th Congressional District.

A bitter dispute over whether a gay conservative group should co-sponsor the conservative movement's largest gathering of the year has led some prominent supporters to withdraw from the event next week.
Riding the winds of success in November's midterm elections, this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, set to begin Feb. 10 in Washington, is expected to draw Republican presidential aspirants like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, as well as thousands of activists.
But some conservative pillars, including church-based groups like the Family Research Council, Concerned Women for America and Liberty University, and others like the Heritage Foundation, are declining to participate. They are angry that the gay organization, GOProud, has been given a seat at the planning table. These groups are opponents of same-sex marriage, which they say GOProud implicitly endorses by saying that the question should be left to the states.
GOProud, founded in 2009, claims to have 10,000 members and holds conservative views on taxes, gun control and national security, although it favored repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. And while it does not formally endorse same-sex marriage, it opposes any federal standard as well as the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which is supported by social conservatives.

Safe sex and natural resources policy converged this past Saturday at the Twin Cities Pride festival, where the Minnesota chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans distributed condoms in wrappers emblazoned with the phrase “Drill, baby, drill!!” in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
City Pages reported on the condoms, which Log Cabin distributed free at its booth in Loring Park in Minneapolis. The text on the condom wrapper added the warning “Just don’t spill” to the slogan “Drill, baby, drill,” first invoked at the 2008 Republican convention by former Maryland lieutenant governor and current Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele. Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin helped to popularize the phrase, which calls for more exploration of domestic oil and gas reserves, both offshore and on land.
Log Cabin Republicans of Minnesota spokesman Alan Shilepsky told The Advocate that his group, which tries to present something unique every year at Pride, hit on the condom concept in the last several weeks and found it to be in perfect alignment with the national conversation surrounding the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig and the resulting oil spill.
“This one was such a no-brainer,” said Shilepsky. “With all the national attention with BP and the Gulf of Mexico and the suspension of any deep-water drilling, and Sarah Palin saying those words, it was like the planets coming into conjunction. What a great way to be in the spirit of pride.”
Despite arriving at the idea easily, it took some work to order and prepare the giveaways for distribution. As treasurer, Shilepsky said he received a bill for 1,000 condoms, give or take.
“One of our board members came up with the idea,” he said. “He ordered a quantity of condoms and another board member desktop-printed the graphic and we printed them off on labels and then two of our guys spent a lot of time pasting labels onto condoms. We had them there and they went like hotcakes.”
The condom was a surprise to Charles Moran, LCR's national spokesman. "We did not know they were coming up with that particular piece of collateral," Moran says. "But we leave it to each chapter to design and produce their own tchotchke outside of what standard Log Cabin-branded materials we provide them for the local pride festivals across the country. Sometimes they are a hit, sometimes not so much, but it gets people talking and having the conversation about what it means to be a conservative in the LGBT movement."
Even Democrats at the Twin Cities pride festival were amused, if not on board with the pro-offshore drilling message, according to Shilepsky.
“Everyone enjoyed it,” he said. “It got a rise out of our fifth district congressman, Keith Ellison. He enjoyed it and asked for a couple to take over to the Democratic booth.”Safe sex and natural resources policy converged this past Saturday at the Twin Cities... more

In this Election pod, VC2 Producer Nerina Penzhorn, examines the phenomenon of gay republican activists, who work for both progressive social policies at the same time they advocate conservative positions on both economic and security issues. She follows around two young, prominent members of the Log Cabin Republicans, a candidate for state senator and up-an-coming lobbyist to understand why it is easier for them to tell their "republican friends they're gay, than gay friends that they're republican."In this Election pod, VC2 Producer Nerina Penzhorn, examines the phenomenon of gay... more
