Freddie was god. Brian was god. John was god. Roger was god. We’d argue over who was the best songwriter (I always contended it was Brian). We argued over who was the best singer, even. Yeah, Freddie was marvelous, but both Brian and John were gravely underrated voices, and it can be cool to hold unconventional opinions. It makes one appear thoughtful and intellectual and independent. I’m still like that, I suppose, although I don’t recall being that way before Queen, before Freddie Mercury, became the biggest pop culture icons in my entire world.
We never argued over who was the biggest star, though. Or who had the most charisma, the greatest presence. Somewhere up in heaven, surely Jesus dreamed of being as glorious as Freddie Mercury.Freddie was god. Brian was god. John was god. Roger was god. We’d argue over who... more

WHAT A VOICE! Here is Marc Martel's audition for Queen Extravaganza, a live tour with members of Queen in honor of the band's 40th anniversary -- he also has a band called The Band Downhere. Considering he's Freddie Mercury reincarnate, I'd say he has a pretty good shot of winning.

Way up in Wasilla, where the men are men and the moose are meat, members of the high school symphonic jazz choir were excitedly rehearsing for the upcoming graduation ceremony, where they'd be performing an epic rendition of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." Then they were told by Principal Dwight Probasco (that's his staff directory page) that the song had been pulled from the program. "Why?" they wondered, having put months of effort into the big number. Probasco explained it was because he'd received a complaint from a parent. You see Freddie Mercury, the vocalist who had sung the original version of the song, was gay.

The comic will play the flamboyant rock frontman in a biopic, co-produced by Robert De Niro.
Peter Morgan - who wrote Frost/Nixon and The Queen - is scripting the untitled drama, which will focus on the years leading up to Queen's appearance at 1985's Live Aid concert.
Queen guitarist Brian May said the choice of lead may surprise many.
"We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time," he said in an interview with BBC World News' HardTalk.
"He's been in on this project since we started talking about it seriously with Peter Morgan a couple of years ago."
In the interview to be screened next Thursday, he added: "I think we'll try and keep ourselves out of it as much as we can."

With his obnoxious, raunchy and always hilarious antics in films like Brüno, Borat, and Talladega Nights, actor Sacha Baron Cohen has had a strong presence in the comedy world. Even his turn in Tim Burton's dark musical Sweeney Todd has a comedic touch to it. Now Cohen is taking the plunge into quite a serious role as Deadline reports the actor has signed on to play Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of one of rock and roll's greatest bands: Queen. The band responsible for hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You and Killer Queen will have their musical exploits chronicled in a feature film from Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan.

Former Bad Company and Free lead singer Paul Rodgers says he is longer collaborating with the surviving members of Queen.
Rodgers who joined Brian May and Roger Taylor in 2004 and performed on several tours and also recorded an album, The Cosmos Rocks which received mixed reviews in 2008. Told Billboard magazine: "At this point we're gonna sit back from this."
Queen's original singer, frontman Freddie Mercury, died of an Aids-related illness in 1991.
However Rodgers has not ruled out the possibility of working together again.
"It's kind of an open book, really," he said. "If they approach me to do something for charity, for instance, or something like that... I'd be very much into doing that, for sure."Former Bad Company and Free lead singer Paul Rodgers says he is longer collaborating... more

Queen guitarist Brian May claims that for years he was unaware Queen Superstar Diva Freddie Mercury was gay.
"I think there was a slight suspicion, but it never occurred to me that he was gay."

When Mr. Mercury was asked directly by a reporter if he was gay, Brian May thought it was a brilliant diversionary tactic for him to say "Yes, darling, of course. I'm as gay as a daffodil."

On September 5th, 1946 Farrokh Bulsara was born on the isle of Zanzibar, just off the coast of Tanzania. Farrokh was regarded as a bright student who excelled in several sports, however he was also noted as being quiet and shy with a “great deal of interest in music.”
At the age of 17, his family fled to London as a result of the Zanzibar Revolution. From 1969 to early 1970, he participated in several bands – none of which went anywhere. In April of 1970, Farrokh joined with a guitarist named Brian May and a drummer named Roger Taylor. Queen was born. He also legally changed his name; Freddie Mercury emerged.
Freddie Mercury is regarded as one of the best (if not the best) voices in rock and roll history. He possessed a crisp and vibrant tenor whose range spanned four octaves. One of Queen's most noted performances came in 1985 at the Live Aid concert. The entire stadium of 72,000 people clapped, sang and swayed in unison to the performance. This performance at Live Aid is often regarded as the single best given in rock history.
On November 23rd, 1991 an announcement was made to the press on behalf of Mercury: he had tested positive for the HIV virus. He passed the next day.
Though notorious for being ferociously private and rarely granting interviews, he was once quoted as saying “What will I be doing in twenty years' time? I'll be dead, darling! Are you crazy?”
It just doesn't seem fair that we lost him nearly seventeen years ago. It is adding insult to injury in light of knowing how some performers abuse the privilege of producing music (term used loosely) these days.
In any case, I'd be remiss in not recognizing the day.
Happy Birthday, Freddie.
