SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — Edward Zivica, a 70-year-old who served in the Navy in the 1960s, faces a hard choice come Veterans Day next week: He can obey the rules and remain in his apartment complex, or he can follow his tradition of hanging the American flag outside his place.
The managers at his subsidized housing project in Springfield, Ore., have given him notice he'll be evicted if he again violates the rules against putting anything on the exterior walls.
That notice came after the flag went up on Oct. 27 for Navy Day, one of several that Zivica marks by hanging it outside the community room near the main entrance. He'd gotten a letter from the management in June telling him to quit.
Zivica was in the Navy's Submarine Service from 1960 to 1967, the Eugene Register-Guard (http://bit.ly/sNKhiN) reported.
The flag, he said, was one the Army sent when his dad, a World War II veteran, died. Zivica says a brother also served, in Korea, as a Marine.
He told the paper he doesn't have many options for housing, so he would knuckle under and sign a compliance notice, which he called "a confession" and "an apology."
But he also said he finds it hard not to hang the flag on Veterans Day.
"It's one of the biggest days of the year for us," he said. "... I guess we'll see what happens."
The downtown apartment complex is managed by St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County, which opened it in 2009 with Zivica as one of the first tenants. CEO Terry McDonald said the action wasn't aimed at the American flag as such but rather at preventing a precedent that could lead to more-controversial flags or banners.
"If you're going to live in a situation where there's lots of other tenants, you need to follow the rules that are set up," McDonald told KVAL-TV, which first reported the story (http://bit.ly/vLRh9f).
After residents requested one, management has put up a flagpole. Zivica calls it "flimsy and cheesy-looking," plastic with no lanyard to hoist the flag or lower it to half-staff. The small flag, he said, has faded to orange after less than a year.

Just seeing the Stars and Stripes causes voters - even Democrats - to be more likely to vote Republican.
A professional journal of the Association For Psychological Science cites a study that says just that:
"Psychological scientists Travis Carter (University of Chicago, Center for Decision Research), Melissa Ferguson (Cornell University), and Ran Hassin (Hebrew University) challenge the notion that subtle cues in the environment can’t (or don’t) significantly alter people’s political judgments in their article “A Single Exposure to the American Flag Shifts Support Toward Republicanism up to 8 Months Later.'"
U.S. News and World Report cites from the now published study:
“A single exposure to an American flag resulted in a significant increase in participants’ Republican voting intentions, voting behavior, political beliefs, and implicit and explicit attitudes, with some effects lasting 8 months,” the study found. “These results constitute the first evidence that nonconscious priming effects from exposure to a national flag can bias the citizenry toward one political party and can have considerable durability.”
Is it as simple as people perceive Republicans are more in line with the values and traditions most associated with America and its flag?http://tsradionotes.blogspot.com/2011/07/old-glory-triggers-republican-leanings.htmlJust seeing the Stars and Stripes causes voters - even Democrats - to be more likely... more

As a great man once said, "Yer 'ither widdis, 'er yer aginnis." after which we as a nation waved our tiny Chinese made American flags non stop for seven straight years while singing the national anthem as loudly as our little voices could carry it. Today, our President spends most of his waking hours apologizing for America's inherent awesomeness and the other half pretending he has a birth certificate. And our pop stars are allowed to run rampant, besmirching this great nation of ours to anybody with a note pad and tape recorder like they have some kind of damned constitutional right to do so. Remember what happened when the Dixie Chicks tried to pull that shit? Of course not, because all evidence of the existence of the "Dixie Chicks" has been removed from public record and anyone that says the name of that non-existent band is rounded up for additional reconditioning by agents of the former administration. So I'm kind of in a hurry to finish this up here before I am rightfully taken from my home by force and beaten night and day for my crimes.
But now, far removed from those ice cream and cookies glory days of complete obedience to the crown, our teens, tweens and twinfants are being indoctrinated by a floppy haired little illegal alien with the voice of an angel and the heart of a god damned baby Sadam Hitler Bin Stalin!
Justin Bieber hates America.
I personally always knew that his music was a blatant attack on all who heard it and have been trying to warn people of the repeated anti-American lyrical content. People would laugh and say I was too old, that I just didn't get it and ask me where my pants were. But who's pants now?! We give and we give and we give to him. We buy his merchandise, we go to his movies, we allow him all of the teens he can eat and after all of these things that we as Americans have given to this Canadian hate monger, this is how he repays us.
"You guys are evil," he told some hippie magazine writer. "Canada's the best country in the world."
Unedited, out of context quote, directly from the enemy combatant's mouth. In an interview appearing in tomorrow's "Rolling Stone Magazine Publication Periodical Leaflet Brochure", this foreheadless ice licker spews his message of hate for all of the news stand going public to read. And since that demographic is so laughably insignificant and pitiable, I am making sure that all of the world wide internets can hear my fear and anger about something that apparently happened but that I have no first hand knowledge of!
In the good old days, a statement like that would be the last we would ever hear from a foreign celebrity on our soil. The interview would have been abruptly ended by a battalion of masked, privately contracted security forces storming into the interview room and shouting incoherent code words and short hand that really only means anything to them. A burlap sack would have been pulled down over his dreamy, pouty face with special care taken to muss his trademark as roughly as the captor could stomach. After which he would be whisked away to an undisclosed location to be held without trial for as long as was deemed appropriate. We as a country have gone soft and are too afraid to do what's right to people who call us names!
And while that would seemingly have been enough for any publicist or management team with any sort of desire to maintain their ridiculously cushy gravy train to immediately spring into action, hurriedly clarifying exactly what he meant to say while frantically pushing their meal ticket toward the door, he was inexplicably allowed to continued the interview. Apparently, so personally stricken by "Bieber Fever" themselves, his management team was too busy elbowing each other in the ribs and giggling "Did he actually say that?" to realize that their entire world was about to explode right in front of their eyes by their super star's next admission.
Justin Bieber believes in the divinity of sexual assault?
You fuckin' heard me right, jack!
When questioned further about his anti-abortion beliefs (why the fuck Justin Bieber is being asked about his stance on abortion in the first damned place I don't know, unless we're planning on electing another FOREIGNER President!) in regard to "extenuating circumstances such as rape", this little Canadian Taliban's response was:
"Um. Well, I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason."
...
He what?
...
That's right ladies, you were raped... with a higher purpose in mind. So says the Bieber.
To really expound on that statement would obviously be pointless. It's the kind of thing a homeless person screams before running into traffic and barking at every green car that hits him. But apparently he said it and apparently, (until the flood of awkwardly worded press releases come streaming out of Team Bieber, trying desperately to put the rape back in the bottle) he believes it. I honestly couldn't be giddier about his team's gross mishandling of his former career and just hope this turns out to be as gigantic a cluster Bieber as it could be.
I take it all back Justin, I love you so hard. Keep on keepin' stupid.

13-year-old Cody Alicea made national headlines recently when school officials at Denair Middle School ordered him to take down the American flag on the back of his bike while he was on school property. Apparently "some students" had been complaining about the flag. Cody had just been trying to honor military veterans such as his grandfather Robert. Well, it turns out that Cody's story struck a major chord with veterans across the United States. As Cody rode his bike to school on Monday, he was accompanied by hundreds of other bikes and motorcycles. After arriving at Denair Middle School, Cody and his patriotic escort recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem.13-year-old Cody Alicea made national headlines recently when school officials at... more

Four Live Oak High School teens sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo have become the focus of national media attention and spurred a march by Hispanic students through downtown Morgan Hill.
Live Oak students Daniel Galli, Dominic Maciel, Matt Dariano and Austin Carvalho wore red, white and blue T-shirts - some with the American flag and some with flag shorts - to school Wednesday, prompting administrators to ask the students to change their clothing or turn their T-shirts inside-out because it could incite a confrontation on Cinco de Mayo. The four students' parents were called into a conference with Assistant Principal Miguel Rodriguez and Principal Nick Boden, who sent the students home with an unexcused absence - not a suspension.
"I just couldn't believe it," said Dominic's mother Julie Fagerstrom Wednesday. "I'm an open-minded parent, but it's got to be on both sides. It can't be five kids singled out."
Students originally reported that five students were sent home, but one returned to class Wednesday.
Maciel said Rodriguez called the T-shirts "incendiary."
"They said we were starting a fight, we were fuel to the fire," said Dariano, a sophomore.
Teresa Casillas, parent of two Live Oak students, said the American-flag wearing students were yelling "We live in America!" at the brunch break Wednesday. She said her children were upset by their behavior at school, calling it disrespectful.
"We're all offended by it," Casillas said. She said parents of all ethnicities she spoke with felt that way. "Morgan Hill is too small of a community to start any racial wars. This is just bringing it out a little bit more."
The incident has set off a firestorm of outrage online, a flurry of media coverage and a backlash from some in the Hispanic community, who have been offended by some of the defenses offered for the four students.
After the Morgan Hill Times broke the story, Bay Area news stations set up camp in front of Live Oak High School Thursday morning as many more students came to school wearing red, white and blue. In addition, the story made it to national media outlets, such as The Drudge Report and the front page of FoxNews.com.

In addition, the story made it to national media outlets, such as The Drudge Report and the front page of FoxNews.com.
Locally, about 200 Hispanic students walked out of Live Oak and Ann Sobrato high schools, chanting "Si se puede" and "We want respect" and disrupting traffic as they marched through Morgan Hill to demonstrate their support for Mexico.
"It's disrespectful to do it on Cinco de Mayo," said Jessica Cortez, a Live Oak sophomore. "They can be a patriot on some other day. Not that specific day."
Live Oak parent Greg Hall saw the band of Hispanic students walking down Monterey Road Thursday.
"The fact that these four kids were singled out for wearing American colors is utterly ridiculous," he said. "I think the assistant principal and principal should be fired. The (protesting) students should be disciplined - suspended or expelled."
Hispanic students felt students wearing American flags were disrespecting the Mexican-American students on Cinco de Mayo - a day on which they celebrate their Mexican heritage.
Students who sported red, white and blue said denying them the right to wear American colors is a violation of the First Amendment.
While Live Oak administrators were silent on the issue, Morgan Hill Unified School District Superintendent Wes Smith said that the district "does not prohibit nor do we discourage wearing patriotic clothing."
In a statement, Smith wrote: "The incident on May 5 at Live Oak High School is extremely unfortunate. While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not, and will not, be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing. This matter is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken."
The four students and their parents met with Assistant Superintendent Jay Totter Wednesday evening at the district headquarters and they said Totter told them what happened was wrong and "(the district) would take care of it."
Uncle Sam even set foot onto Live Oak campus Thursday in the form of John Messina, a San Jose resident who said he was so enraged that he drove 30 minutes to protest before school started. He held a sign that read "Patriotism is not a crime" on one side and "Support the 1st amendment. Fire Rodriguez" on the back.
Over at Gilroy High School, Mexican and American patriotic colors commingled peacefully Wednesday, Principal Marco Sanchez said.
"Kids were in good spirits," he said. "I was out on campus most of the day and didn't see anything that was abnormal."
Plenty of students donned both countries' national colors, but none were sent home for wearing green, red, white, blue or any combination thereof, he said. Doing so would be "outrageous," he said.Four Live Oak High School teens sent home for wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco... more

An Oregon apartment complex is banning its residents from flying American flags, not only from their dwellings but also their vehicles, KATU in Portland reported.
Residents' outrage started when Jim Clausen, whose son is in the military and on his way back to Iraq, was told he couldn't fly an American flag from the back of his motorcycle.
If he didn't take the flag down, he was told he'd face eviction, the station reported.
"It floored me," Clausen told the station. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying. It [the flag] stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly the flag."
Sharron White, a long-time resident, was told by management to take down the flag she's flown on her car for eight years because "someone might get offended."
"I just said to her, 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White told the station.
The ban also applies to flag stickers on cars, as well as sports flags.

Chester, Pa., firefighter James Krapf wants to know what's wrong with Old Glory. The 11-year veteran was suspended without pay Thursday after he refused to peel a sticker of the American flag from his locker.
"It's pride…it's a matter of pride," Krapf said.
A new department rule mandates that all stickers and statements -- union, cartoon and political -- be stripped from lockers after several offensive and racist images showed up in the firehouse. But Krapf figured the red, white and blue was safe.

"Many compliments have greeted the National Museum of American History's $85 million architectural revamp, which created entry lobbies from the Mall and from Constitution Avenue, installed a grand glass staircase connecting the first and second floors, and added a welcome center and other amenities. So far, so good (though to me the $2.5 million, 40-by-19-foot silvery abstract "architectural representation of a waving flag" that frames the entrance to the Star-Spangled Banner gallery is a complete bust: It doesn't wave much, fades into the background and is barely recognizable as Old Glory).
But there remains the nagging question about what this, the national history museum, should be about. Is the subject political history, industrial history, scientific history, cultural history, sociological history, all of the above, or even more? A look around shows the obvious answer -- "even more." This lack of focus was criticized by a commission of experts in 2002, which also raised concerns about politically skewed interpretations and potential undue influence of private donors.
The renovation, which was unveiled late last November, isn't finished. Some spaces remain closed, with the openings of shows like "On the Water: Stories From Maritime America," "Stories on Money" and "Bitter Harvest: The Bracero Program" set for later this year. Some old exhibitions, like "The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden" and "The Price of Freedom: Americans at War," remain basically untouched. Still, based on the progress to date and the announced plans, the end result will not be the real national history museum American citizens and visitors deserve.""Many compliments have greeted the National Museum of American History's $85... more

Comment..... Impression is everything... a photo is worth a thousand words ....what the hell.... Obama doesn't wear the flag but now his convention uses it then trashes it.... This will play right into Palin's ability to make Obama look bad..... in this case his people drop the ball
Have you ever wondered what happens to those flags after the convention? The mystery is solved… and RedState has all the proof in pictures. RedState gave us a bird’s eye view of the convention trash when all the folks left the Pepsi Center….when the speeches were done…..when they all headed to the over the top coronation at Invesco Field. It wasn’t a pretty sight, so much for recycling.
I know for a fact there is a right way and an incorrect way to dispose of the American flag….. and throwing it away isn’t the right way. So here goes a lesson on disposing of the American Flag…..American Flag 101 for all good citizens who threw their flags in the trash….
According to the USA Flag Site a flag should be burned or destroyed in a dignified manner. Okay that is Flag Etiquette for Dummies! (It is possible that veterans organizations like the American Legion may offer disposal of flags as well.)
The problem with these flags they were neither tattered or torn, still in good shape as a matter fact, it is just that people just discarded them without a thought! Shame on the folks at the Democratic Convention. I know you all sleep better at night because of that flag and those who defend it! Too bad you have no respect for it
