I have to admit, seeing a honey bee these days is now like see a rainbow or finding a four leaf clover and by chance witnessing a shooting star. As I traveled over the U.S. something I noticed puzzled me. Where have all the bees gone?
What is extremely disturbing is that the honey bees are disappearing in large numbers in countries like the U.S, France, Argentina, Italy and elsewhere. Perhaps even more disturbing is that no one seems to know where they are going, as very few are found dead around the beehives.
“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man”

(OrganicJar) Here's a list of the top 10 foods which lowers the "bad" LDL cholesterol, while leaving the "good" HDL largely unaffected. Are YOU eating them?
#1 Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated Fats (Olive Oil, Peanut Oil, Peanuts, Olives, Avocados)
Cholesterol Reduction: 18%
Substituting saturated animal fats and other high cholesterol foods with healthier fats like olive oil, peanut oil, and avocados is the most powerful thing you can do to achieve a drastic reduction in your LDL cholesterol. Specifically a diet high in olive and sunflower oil, that contains 12.9% saturated fat, 15.1% monounsaturated fat, and 7.9% polyunsaturated fat can achieve an 18% reduction in LDL cholesterol vs people on a diet higher in saturated fat.
#2 Bran (Oat, Rice)
Cholesterol Reduction: 7-14%
Bran, particularly oat bran, has been proven effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. Add bran to hot cereals and bread. Also, eating whole oatmeal every morning, or switching to whole products like brown rice, can help you get more bran in your diet and lower your cholesterol numbers.
#3 Flax Seeds
Cholesterol Reduction: 8-14%
Up to 50 grams of flax seeds a day has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol in healthy young adults by up to 8%, and 38 grams of flax seeds per day reduced LDL cholesterol by 14% in people with high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia). In both studies the flax seeds where consumed in a muffin or other bread product. Flax seeds are easily incorporated in baked goods, as well as added to hot cereals like oatmeal.
#4 Garlic
Cholesterol Reduction: 9-12%
Studies have shown that less than half a clove (900mg) of raw garlic a day can lower cholesterol by 9-12%. Raw garlic is best and can be added to olive oil salad dressings, or as a garnish on soups and sandwiches.

Vegan: Where do You Get Your Protein?
Eating Vegan: Where do You Get Your Protein?
Written by Becky Striepe

Second only to “I would die without cheese!”, folks ask all the time about where vegans get their protein. For someone accustomed to centering their dinner plate around a piece of animal protein, I can see how this might seem like a problem. You take that steak off of your plate, and you’re basically living on salad and potatoes.
Not that I’m knocking salads or potatoes. In fact, baked potatoes do contain a little bit of protein!
But really, where do you get protein when it’s not coming from animal products? The short answer is: lots of places! Here are some common vegan staples and their protein contents:
* » See also: Can Someone Explain “Organic Tobacco” to Me?
* » Get Eat. Drink. Better. by RSS or sign up by email.
* beans - 7-10 grams per half cup (cooked)
* tofu - 2.3 grams per half ounce
* peanut butter - 8 grams per 2 Tablespoons
* almonds - 8 grams per 1/4 cup
* peanuts - 9 grams per 1/4 cup
* cashews - 5 grams per 1/4 cup
* flax seeds – 8 grams per 1/4 cup
* brown rice - 3 grams per 4 ounces
* quinoa - 4.5 grams per 1/2 cup
* baked potato - 2.5 grams
* cooked broccoli - 7 grams per half cup
* peas - 8 grams per half cup
* corn - 5 grams per 1 cup
Really, the question is, where don’t vegans get protein? The recommended daily value for protein is about 50 grams for a 2000 calorie diet, which you could easily hit by combining a couple of protein sources per meal: beans and rice, whole grain cereal in soy or nut milk, or broccoli and whole wheat pasta.
So, spill the beans, my vegan friends! What’s your favorite protein source?

(OrganicJar) I’m a huge fan of nut milks especially because they’re so much healthier than dairy milk and taste amazing! I created a quick, simple video with my friend Lisa Paris explaining just how easy it is to make your own almond nut milk.
Almonds are an incredible food! They were one of the first cultivated nuts on earth and are so rich with nutrients. Its important to mention that you need to be buying ‘raw’ organic almonds to get them most nutrients from them.
However, many don’t know that a law was passed a few years ago requiring all almonds to be pasteurized. The worst part is they can still legally be labeled as raw! If you didn’t know this, make sure to check out an article I wrote all about it here: Raw Almonds Are Illegal The good news is there are 2 loopholes that still allow you to purchase truly raw almonds, so make sure to check that article out.
Okay, back to our amazing Almond Nut Milk! Here’s what you’ll need to make this:
Ingredients
* 2 Cups – Raw Organic Almonds
* 4 Cups – Purified Water
* 2 Pitted Dates
* 1 tsp – Vanilla Extract
* A Dash of Cinnamon (optional)
Equipment
* Blender
* Nut Milk Bag / Cheesecloth (or as Lisa mentioned a cheap ‘Paint Strainer’ found at any hardware store)

(OrganicJar) Here are 5 simple amazing foods, that everyone should incorporate into there diet.
1. Cinnamon
Here’s one superfood that’s easy on the waistline and popular with kids. The bark of the cinnamon tree, native to Sri Lanka, turns out to have extraordinary health benefits. Various research conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests that cinnamon regulates blood sugar, inhibits cancer cells and is anti-inflammatory.
Tip
add some to your cereal or yogurt!
.
2. Coconut Milk
The coconut is an unusual fruit: It’s rich, and the fat is mostly saturated. In the South Pacific, traditional diets use copious amounts of coconut oil, yet studies there have shown that people don’t get heart disease. In the U.S., research to support the heart-healthy claim is still being conducted. But we do know that coconut flakes, coconut milk and cream, and coconut oil contain lots of an antiviral, antibacterial fatty acid called lauric acid—one of the immune-boosters babies get from breast milk.
Tip
add to smoothies, and homemade juices, you can substitute this for water in many recipes.

I’m still surprised at the number of people who buy raw almonds thinking that they’re raw. The truth is they’re not. In the fall of 2007 a bill was passed requiring all raw almonds in North America to undergo a mandatory pasteurization making it illegal to purchase raw almonds.
Luckily, there are a few loop holes that still allow you to purchase raw almonds. You can purchase them...I’m still surprised at the number of people who buy raw almonds thinking that... more

In the winter of 2006, a strange phenomenon fell upon honeybee hives across the country. Without a trace, millions of bees vanished from their hives, leaving billions of dollars of crops at risk and potentially threatening our food supply. The epidemic set researchers scrambling to discover why honeybees were dying in record numbers — and to stop the epidemic in its tracks before it spread further.In the winter of 2006, a strange phenomenon fell upon honeybee hives across the... more

After having their organic almond businesses devastated by the USDA's bizarre decision requiring mandatory chemical fumigation of almonds, the almond industry is fighting back. Fifteen American almond growers have filed a lawsuit against the USDA in an attempt to repeal the requirements that all almonds grown in California be fumigated or pasteurized. (Virtually all almonds sold in the United States are grown in California.)
Since the USDA's ruling in 2007, organic almond growers in California have been economically devastated by the mandatory fumigation of almonds. Because USDA rules don't apply to almonds being imported from other countries, however, the industry has seen a huge shift away from U.S. growers and towards almond growers in Spain and other countries. Some American almond farmers have even called the USDA's decision "a plan to destroy the U.S. almond industry and put small organic farmers out of business."
The USDA's plot to deceive consumers over "raw"
The mandatory almond fumigation requirement is seen by health-conscious consumers as not merely bizarre, but downright fraudulent. That's because the USDA's regulations allow fumigated and pasteurized almonds to be labeled "raw," thereby intentionally deceiving the consuming public and instantly destroying consumer trust in the labeling of all almonds.
By any honest measure, the people making these decisions at the USDA can only be described as either idiotic or criminal. To enforce regulations requiring the intentional mislabeling of raw food seems more like the actions of a criminal racket than a government agency. While online pharmacies selling mislabeled pharmaceuticals are routinely raided and shut down by U.S. authorities, when the government itself engages in similar deceptions, it declares itself above the law and immune to prosecution.
This lawsuit by U.S. almonds growers aims to overturn the USDA's deception. These fraudulent actions on the part of the USDA have generated an enormous amount of criticism from the raw food community, whose members depend on almonds to make raw almond milk, raw almond "burgers" and other raw foods preparations. As leaders of the raw foods movement rightly insist, fumigating or pasteurizing nuts destroys as much as 90 percent of their original nutritional value, altering proteins and destroying disease-fighting phytonutrients. The USDA, however, remains remarkably illiterate on this topic, have never made a single statement acknowledging any qualitative difference between cooked foods and raw foods.
__________
However, the USDA doesn't require this of almonds imported from other countries, only the almonds grown here, mostly from California. Why does the USDA seem to hate the American farmer so much? GM foods, irradiation, and now this. If I didn't know any better, I would say they were out to destroy the livelihoods of American farmers. And again, we have the deceptive description regarding pasteurized nuts as raw with a lack of scientific backup. Is there no end to it? After having their organic almond businesses devastated by the USDA's bizarre... more
