Joe Johnston, whose credits include "Jurassic Park III" and "Jumanji," has been signed to direct the comic-book adaptation "The First Avenger: Captain America," Marvel Studios announced Monday.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures, "Captain America" is based on the Marvel Comics character Steve Rogers. In the early days of the Marvel Universe, Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Although the role of Steve Rogers, a research volunteer turned unlikely super hero named Captain America, hasn't been cast, the Captain America project will be released in 2011 along with the big screen adaptation of The Avengers, which will see Iron Man suit up with Captain America, Thor, War Machine, Hulk, and other heroes from the popular Avengers comic book series.Joe Johnston, whose credits include "Jurassic Park III" and... more

Marvel Studios has hired Don Cheadle to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron Man sequel. Cheadle will play Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark’s best friend and future War Machine. Director Jon Favreau has made numerous hints that War Machine may play a part in the second film. The Hollywood Reporter’s sources claim it was a conflict due to financial differences. Earlier this year, it was widely speculated that Marvel was trying to low ball Favreau with an offer not much higher than his initial payday for the first film. It is not unusual for salaries to double for a sequel, especially when the first film outperformed to the level that Iron Man had. But from what I’ve heard, Marvel believes the superhero characters themselves are the real stars, and some have said that the company is being thrifty in their negotiations for their future projects.Marvel Studios has hired Don Cheadle to replace Terrence Howard in the upcoming Iron... more

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The film-finance world may not feel an immediate pinch from the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing by Lehman Bros. and the planned sale of Merrill Lynch by Bank of America -- but longer term, there may be an ouch.
"A financial market that's in a meltdown is not good for the industry in so many ways," is how film-finance attorney John Burke put it Monday.
Admittedly, the studios and startups that have made use of funds from institutions like Merrill Lynch have locked in money and interest rates for the near-term. Summit Entertainment and Marvel Studios, both of which have credit facilities with Merrill, for example, have their rates already set.
But some companies could see their future clouded as the Merrill sale goes through.
MGM's United Artists division, which has a $500 million production facility with Merrill, has only one movie on the immediate horizon -- the Tom Cruise vehicle "Valkyrie" -- and could find itself facing tough questions from new Merrill owners Bank of America.
In the most dramatic scenario, that could lead to the facility being pulled.
While Bank of America is seen as a solid institution with its own history of film investment, at least one rival executive said Monday that an exit from the UA deal is a distinct possibility.NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The film-finance world may not feel an immediate pinch... more
