"Hollywood's superhero summer has arrived with a vengeance.
The Marvel Comics mash-up "The Avengers" launched the summer movie season with a $200.3 million opening weekend domestically, by far the biggest debut ever.
If distributor Disney's revenue estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, "The Avengers" would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.
A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so "The Avengers" redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.
"The Avengers" shot past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year's "Harry Potter" finale.
With $441.5 million overseas since last week, "The Avengers" worldwide total climbed to $641.8 million."

Thor, the Marvel Studios movie take on the mythical god and comic book superhero, pounded the competition with its weekend box office take. Although Thor will probably not make it to the $86.2 million take from the debut of Fast Five last weekend, predictions are that it will bring home up to $70 million for Marvel Studios from the weekend box office.Thor, the Marvel Studios movie take on the mythical god and comic book superhero,... more

New Star is Born in Marvel - Posted on 15 January 2011
Marko Djurdjević -
(born January 23, 1979) is a German illustrator and concept artist of Serbian descent, best known for his character designs. He currently works for Marvel Comics, and has produced a large body of cover art, as well as promotional designs, character concepts, and interior artwork. He currently resides in Berlin, Germany with his wife Jelena.
As a child he exhibited a talent for drawing, inspired by cartoons such as He-Man. Visual art was not encouraged in his household, and so Djurdjevic was forced to teach himself how to develop his abilities. As a boy he was unaware that other artists he admired often used pictures and photos to draw inspiration from, assuming that they made it up out of their heads. This later contributed to his not using any references in his work process, relying on a visual library that was developed through memorization. When Marko was 11, he discovered Burne Hogarth’s book Dynamic Anatomy (1958), a major turning point in his self-education. Studying the guide for two years, Djurdjevic then put the book away and began to add a layer of realism to his drawings. He used what he learned from Hogarth as a foundation, while at the same time pulling ideas from his everyday life observations.

Geeky Girls Love Sci-Fi / Photos
-Scenes for Joe Johnston's forthcoming superhero flick Captain America: The First Avenger were being filmed in London's Trafalgar Square on Sunday.
The film, expected to be released next July, will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. Cue dramatic music.
Sadly, major cast members Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Samuel L. Jackson, Dominic Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones were absent from the shoot as extras dressed in 1940s attire were filmed celebrating the Nazi surrender on VE Day.
But fingers crossed there's still a chance to get a glimpse of Mr. Evans in lycra as this September the streets of Manchester and Liverpool will be transformed into 1940s New York for a dramatic car chase.
Actor Neal McDonough, who stars in the film as S.H.I.E.L.D officer Dum Dum Dugan recently praised the casting of Evans, saying that he admired the actor's dedication to the role.
He told Bang Showbiz: "He's great in the role, a great guy, he's one of the people I'd love to work with every day. He's going to be someone you're going to be watching for a very long time. He's so dedicated to his craft, he works really hard."
McDonough also revealed that he had enjoyed being part of the cast of the film, adding: "I'm happy as I could possibly be to be a part of Captain America. For an actor it's fantastic - for me as a kid, Captain America was one of my favourites - so to be Dum Dum it's just been a blast. I'm having a great old time killing the bad guys."

......I am NOT asking "How do they stack up"?
- but the clue is "Some better than others"
From Comics to Screen: Marvel's Babes
As any comic book fanatic can attest, adapting a superhero comic for the big screen is a rather arduous task for any filmmaker or actor to take on. In the case of actresses charged with playing super-heroines, the perils of such a task are ten-fold, as these characters are at all times intelligent, strong, vulnerable, relatable, and - perhaps most significantly – godlike in their beauty. (Nevermind the fact that most of these fictional ladies were created by sex-starved geeks, who imagined such busty and scantily clad female characters from either their mother's basement, or a studio filled with other similarly sexually deprived male artists.)
Some of these portrayals are great, and others are, well, just plain wrong. IGN Stars recently flipped through the pages of our comic book stacks, and watched all our superhero movies, to come up with a list of Marvel and DC's best and worst babes.
