Rep. Michele Bachmann insisted this week that the reason 40 million Americans “choose” not to buy health care insurance has nothing to do with the cost.
Speaking to Fox News host Sean Hannity after attending Supreme Court arguments on Wednesday, the former Republican presidential candidate said that the Obama administration was wrong to suggest that insurance could be regulated because everyone would eventually be in the health care market.
“One argument that the government was trying to make is that somehow health care is uniquely different,” Bachmann explained. “That government can regulate it because everyone participates. Health insurance is not uniquely different.”
“It’s still an opportunity that some people choose to engage in, but 40 million people do not.”
She continued: “And the premise was made that people don’t buy insurance because they can’t afford it. That’s not true. There are people who just decide they want to roll the dice and take their chances that they won’t need insurance.”
Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families found in 2009 that 66 percent thought Congress’ top priority should be making health care more affordable. In all, 44 percent of those polled said they had cut back on household spending in the previous two years as a result of health care costs.
The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured determined (PDF) in 2007 that 80 percent of those without health insurance were working families.
In 2010, Bachmann became the first lawmaker to introduce legislation to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care reform law.
As justices were hearing oral arguments on Monday, the Minnesota Republican stood on the steps in front of the Supreme Court and told several tea party groups that “this is the day that we have been waiting for!”
“We have not waved the white flag of surrender on socialized medicine!” she exclaimed. “This is one of the most important, consequential decisions that will ever come before this court. … We believe that the Constitution means something!”

One Fox News analyst says that he may one day nostalgically look back on the Occupy protest movement, comparing them to hobos, tramps, bums and yippies.
On Tuesday, activists declared their intention to ‘Occupy the Caucus’ in Iowa by protesting at the campaign offices of Democratic President Barack Obama and most of the Republican contenders.
“The circus has come to town,” Fox News analyst Peter Johnson Jr. told Fox & Friends host Steve Doocy on Wednesday. “Perhaps this is cultural occasion in America. We’ve had hobos, we’ve had tramps, we’ve had bums, we’ve had hippies, we’ve had yippies. Perhaps we’ll look back on this in a nostalgic way and say, ‘Isn’t this wonderful. All these misguided people with nothing to do in January, they showed up in Iowa, they didn’t make a difference, they got a lot of attention. It was wonderful.’”
“You know they’ve sworn, they took a pledge — just like the hobo pledge at the end of the 19th century — that they’re not going to do drugs, they’re not going to do alcohol and they’re not going to carry weapons. So that is a very important step forward for the Occupy movement and we should be very grateful,” he added.
Johnson suggested that the “heckling class” of protesters would be better served by returning to New York and organizing a parade for the soldiers coming home from Iraq.
“Frankly, I’d rather not talk about them any more after this,” he concluded. “Let’s have a parade, not a circus.”

The U.S. Supreme Court has officially scheduled oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of President Obama’s landmark Affordable Care Act, particularly the healthcare reform’s individual mandate. The announcement confirms earlier speculation that the high court would issue a ruling on the healthcare law next year, during the heat of the 2012 presidential campaign.

Don’t get me wrong. I still remained firmly committed to Universal, single payer health care for all Americans, administered like Medicare, but organized around pay for result, not pay for service. That said, not everything about the PPACA (usually noted as the ACA) is bad. One of the law’s best features takes effect on the first of next month. When the bill passed, the naysayers accused that the final regulations on this item would be tailored to fit the needs of Big Insurance. The naysayers were wrong.Don’t get me wrong. The NFIB is asking the high court not only to weigh in on the law’s mandate, but also whether the entire law should fall if that provision is deemed unconstitutional. The 11th Circuit ruled against the plaintiffs on that issue and agreed with the Obama administration that the mandate is severable from the rest of the law.

GASTON, NC [KTLA] -- A reportedly unemployed, uninsured man robbed a bank for $1 in order to get thrown in jail and receive medical attention.
Richard James Verone, a 59-year-old man who reportedly suffers from a growth on his chest, two ruptured disks, and a foot injury, walked into RBC bank unarmed earlier in June and handed the teller a note that read "This is a bank robbery. Please only give me one dollar." After handing over his note, the man said quietly on a couch while the teller called 911.
Verone, a man with no criminal history according to reports, figured that once he was thrown in jail he would receive the medical attention that he was unable to afford on his own.
According to the Washington Post, North Carolina prisoners pay a $5-$7 co-payment for doctor visits as detailed in the inmates handbook -- however, according to the handbook, no inmate will be denied medical attention even if he or she cannot afford the co-payment.

The Facts: The Affordable Care Act, the Constitution and the Courts

Tomorrow, judges of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit will hear arguments in a case challenging the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Four weeks ago, judges in the 4th Circuit heard arguments in two similar cases. Last week, an additional case was argued in the 6th Circuit.
In all of these cases, the plaintiffs may be different, but the arguments they bring to the courthouse are essentially the same. The challenges focus primarily on one provision of the law - people on both sides of the debate agree that the vast majority of the act is clearly constitutional. And the arguments for overturning the Affordable Care Act are simply without merit.
Opponents of reform claim that the law’s individual responsibility provision exceeds Congress’ power to regulate interstate commerce because it penalizes “inactivity.” They are wrong. Individuals who choose to go without health insurance are actively making an economic decision that affects all of us. When people without insurance obtain health care they cannot pay for, those with insurance and taxpayers are often left to pick up the tab.
That’s why the Affordable Care Act requires everyone who can afford it to carry some form of health insurance. 83 percent of Americans already have insurance and only those who are able to afford health insurance will be responsible for obtaining it. And the Congressional Budget Office estimated that only 1 percent of all Americans would pay a penalty for not having health insurance in 2016.
The individual responsibility provision also enables us to finally ban discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions. Without the individual responsibility provision, people could wait until they’re sick or injured to apply for coverage since insurance companies could no longer say no or charge more. That would lead to double digit premiums increases – up to 20% – for everyone in the individual insurance market.
We know that there will be a number of arguments and decisions in courts across the country in the weeks and months ahead and when the legal process ends, we are confident that the Affordable Care Act will be found constitutional.

The Internal Revenue Service says it will need an battalion of 1,054 new auditors and staffers and new facilities at a cost to taxpayers of more than $359 million in fiscal 2012 just to watch over the initial implementation of President Obama's healthcare reforms. Among the new corps will be 81 workers assigned to make sure tanning salons pay a new 10 percent excise tax. Their cost: $11.5 million.
