Farm subsidies paid to members of Congress while they slash other programs
These subsidies are nothing more than payola for supporting industrial fossil fuel intensive GMO agriculture. No wonder some of these farmers don't want to stop planting these crops for their GMO masters. Making over 200,000 a year in planting their crap and trashing the planet seems like a good trade off for them. Are you really a farmer then, or simply no better than a greedy selfish Goldman Sachs vampire?
And I am not as nice about this as the EWG when it comes to Congress. If you aren't a farmer who actually works the land you should not get one. Period.

"This would be a good place to point out that just five crops – corn, cotton, rice wheat and soybeans – account for 90 percent of all farm subsidies. Sixty-two percent of American farmers do not receive any direct payments from the federal farm subsidy system, and that group includes most livestock producers and fruit and vegetable growers.
Among the members of the 112th Congress who collect payments from USDA are six Democrats and 17 Republicans. The disparity between the parties is even greater in terms of dollar amounts: $489,856 went to Democrats, but more than 10 times as much, $5,334,565, to Republicans.
One reason for the disproportionate number of Republican lawmakers benefiting from farm subsidy programs is the current scarcity of rural Democrats in Congress – casualties of the Tea Party wave that swept into office in November of 2010. (This was despite the Democrats’ decision to bow to the wishes of the subsidy lobby by passing a status quo 2008 farm bill in a misguided bid to hang on to those seats.)
Several new members of Congress who won with tea party support have been less than eager to talk about farm subsidies ever since the news broke last year that they, or their families, personally benefit from those very taxpayer dollars.
EWG doesn’t believe that the payments to lawmakers are improper or illegal. But the fact that so many more Republicans in Congress receive so much more in farm subsidies than their Democratic colleagues does highlight the GOP’s controversial decision to spare those programs from the budget ax – even as it slashes funding for so many others. Consider:
•In January, David Rogers of Politico, and Phillip Brasher at the Des Moines Register, reported that the Republican Study Committee proposed to eliminate the meager federal funding for an organic food growers’ program without even mentioning the the possibility of cutting spending for entitlements that send checks out to largest producers of corn, cotton and other commodity crops – regardless of need.
•Then last week (March 21), National Journal reported that the Republican-led House Agriculture Committee is backing cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – previously known as food stamps – in the face of record enrollment levels triggered by high unemployment. But not even minimal reductions were proposed to the excessive payments to wealthy farms.
The GOP-led support for subsidies also comes at a time when big commodity farms clearly don’t need taxpayer funding.
The farm sector is white-hot, and has generally fared extremely well as recession gripped the rest of the economy. Farm income and prices for commodity crops are soaring. In 2008, $210,000 was the average household income of farms that received at least $30,000 in government payments that year. But according to the House Agriculture Committee and the Republic Study Committee, payments to those farms should stay in place while the record 43 million Americans enrolled in SNAP – millions of whom are unemployed for the first time – face slashes in the help they get to put food on the table.
It’s important to note that two of the Republican senators who collect subsidies – Charles Grassley of Iowa and Richard Lugar of Indiana – have been long-time leaders in the effort to reform federal farm programs. Both have fought to right the gross inequity of sending 74 percent of taxpayer-funded payments to the largest and wealthiest 10 percent of farm operations and landlords. The top-heavy support for the biggest operations puts smaller family farms at a serious disadvantage and works against a more diverse and resilient food production system that could stand up against wild swings in weather or global markets – and provide Americans with a healthier food supply.
Of course, Democratic members of Congress have historically been subsidy recipients too, notably former House Agriculture Committee Chairman Charles Stenholm of Texas and former Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas.
Nor is the phenomenon of lawmakers receiving farm subsidies limited to the federal level. Recent media reports have shown that direct payments are even more common in state legislatures in Wyoming, Wisconsin, Montana, Idaho and South Dakota.
At EWG, we believe that farmers deserve a reasonable safety net to protect against damage from drought, storms and fickle markets. But the American public’s investment portfolio in agriculture needs to change. It’s indefensible to provide subsidies to well-off farmers and landowners, especially in the face of a booming farm economy and a federal budget squeeze. Meanwhile, farmers seeking modest federal support to protect water, land and wildlife are being turned away for lack of funds.
We’re also committed advocates for government transparency, and it’s deeply disturbing that the public’s ability to see who gets what from the federal farm subsidy system has been curtailed by the Obama administration. Under the Bush administration, the rules allowed the public to see through shell corporations and paper entities to identify the part owners of subsidized farms and show where the money ended up. The transparency pertained to lawmakers as well. For this analysis EWG was forced to resort to harvesting data from members’ disclosure forms. That was an arduous but ultimately worthwhile task when advocating for greater accountability and transparency, and it didn’t use to be necessary.
Some Congress members (or their families) collecting federal farm subsidies are major players in the annual farm subsidy drama, others have only bit parts in terms of the amount of subsidies they receive. Overall, the distribution of subsidies among members of Congress reflects the highly distorted distribution of farm subsidies among farmers and landlords in the United States – between 1995 and 2009, 10 percent of subsidy recipients collected 74 percent of all subsidies.
The current salary for rank-and-file members of the House and Senate is $174,000 per year, and members enjoy robust health benefits. But whether major or bit players, members of Congress who receive farm subsidies are part of a system that cries out for reform and poses stark choices between helping wealthy landowners or doing right by struggling farm and urban families and the environment."

America elected Barak Obama for one reason only. We had spent years with a government found to have become utterly corrupt, a pack of criminal gangsters no better than Pinochet in Chile or Pol Pot in Cambodia. We were going to go in, put Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Rice, Ashcroft, Gonzales along with 2 dozen top military leaders and more senior members of Congress in prison. When we were done, we would go thru the oil companies, banks, defense giants, insurance companies and more, doing the same. We hoped that when we were finally done, whoever was left would know that they were part of a government by and for the people, not employees of a criminal conpiracy.
President Obama, his backers, the Democratic Party and the boys in Congress across the aisle, however, didn’t want anything to change, it was simply their chance to cash in. We are now left with a political debate in America devoid of any public interest at all, only thieves fighting over the remains of a corpse.
The simplest thing to stay would be to demand an investigation over the illegal attack on Iraq and the national disaster to follow. We have 5000 dead Americans, over a million dead in Iraq and hundreds of billions of dollars stolen in cost overruns, missing oil, missing weapons and a cast of criminals who have convicted themselves. This one is a ‘no brainer.’ Mr. Obama, you won’t even look at this? What are you thinking?
The safe bet for the Bush boys is 9/11. They grew up looking at how a cabal in government had killed President Kennedy and managed to push the whole thing on a half wit, Lee Harvey Oswald. With a cheesy investigation run by the conpirators themselves, led by Allen Dulles, shadowy former Hitler crony, witnesses were silenced, evidence destroyed and an implausible cover story was sold to the American people.
All that was needed was a heavily infiltrated terror cell helped along by friendly Israeli airport security, Rumsfeld “standing down” our Air Forces and several black ops attacks like the Pentagon bombing/missile attack coordinated into the time frame and the stage would be set for a second term, national bankruptcy and the overthrow of our democratic government. Even when it all fell apart, films, evidence, witnesses, testimony all led the planning and execution of 9/11 to the Bush Whitehouse, and millions around the world clammored, “COVERUP!!” the perpetrators will still safe.
Too much money had been made, too many were involved and the whole rotten mess, Democrats and Republicans, would all have to rot in prison together if it came to the surface.
What was the lesson of 9/11? Today it seems to be drugs. When we privatized, not only the CIA but rendition flights that never stop at customs and death squads that can name their own victims, we were really building a national drug Mafia to take the place of the CIA and a dozen more agencies.
How can it be gotten away with? As with Iraq, billions of dollars worth of heroin/opium is flowing out of Afghanistan, enough to pay off governments in the region, military leaders, friendly warlords, unfriendly Taliban and hundreds of key players in Washington and elsewhere. Not only can we fly tons of drugs around the world, but we can murder anyone who tries to stop us, law enforcement or competitors as “terrorists.”
Will we ever look into the hundreds of billions of dollars bilked out of the American people, theft going on still, every minute, from rigged gasoline prices? Again, the same answer, a flood of money, enough to buy Congress, enough to own the Whitehouse, enough to buy any newspaper, any network.
We could name a dozen scandals, two dozen. Everything our government touches is corrupt. Nothing is done without payoffs somewhere or it would “die in committee.” We have no government except to steal. Nicholasville, Kentucky police brochure 100% proof of police corruption - FUNNY! Must watch..
I ran a singing telegram company in Lexington, Kentucky during the 90's. Escort agencies started becoming more and more plentiful and more and more bold. We started receiving a lot of calls asking for illegal services so I started to investigate. The more I investigated the more I started getting harassed by local police. My phones were obviously tapped and I would get calls warning me to back off. Then, the police got bold and started parking across the street from me and following me.
Regardless, the company boomed and expanded to include all types of entertainment and booking nationwide and overseas. We moved just over the city limit to Nicholasville, Kentucky in a warehouse district. We opened a card and gift shop in the front. Then, we prepared an area for dinners and awards and a dance floor with lights and sound and an elevated disc jockey booth for weddings and parties.
Not long after this, the Nicholasville police were asked to harass us for the Lexington police. They started tapping the phones and parking across the street in marked and unmarked cars. They started watching us from specially fitted vans at night and coming by our place with ignorant, biased questions. I grew tired of this and went to the Nicholasville police station and asked for Chief Barry Waldrop. I waited in a chair and got bored. I noticed a brochure in one of those plastic stands on the desk. I went up and grabbed one, read it while waiting. I waited some more and read it again. This time I noticed something that got my attention. I had suspected all along that the police were getting payoffs from the escort agencies. The flier now tells me the truth.

Blackwater Approved Payoffs of Iraqi Officials
To stifle criticism of civilian killings, the American mercenary group formerly known as Blackwater approved payoffs of up to $1 million for Iraqi politicians, according to former company officials who spoke to The New York Times.
In August, a former Marine and former Blackwater employee filed sworn affidavits linking company founder Erik Prince to murders and prostitution.
The statements also say that Prince and Blackwater executives were involved in illegal weapons smuggling and had, on numerous occasions, ordered incriminating documents, e-mails, photos and video destroyed. Prince has since resigned -- however, he did not dispute the bribery allegations when confronted by Blackwater's vice chairman at the time, according to one of the whistleblowers quoted by the Times.
The Iraqi government ultimately revoked the mercenary group's operating license after the Nisour Square massacre, which left 17 civilians dead. Five Blackwater guards were charged for the killings. Lieberman 9 Arrested in D.C. Senate Office: Raw Video
Over 50,000 die every year for lack of health care and more for denial of care despite having health insurance. That's well over 100 deaths per day. 50 million (and growing) in the U.S. have no health care at all. This is why nine Lieberman constituents and members of Mobilization for Health Care Now were arrested today as they sat-in Lieberman's DC office and demanded to see him.
Five of the Lieberman Nine have been released. The other four intend to stay in jail until Lieberman meets with them to discuss rejecting the money he accepts from insurance companies!
Meanwhile ABC News reports: "Later we will see much a larger protest from the other side of the political spectrum as potentially thousands of protesters gather with Republican lawmakers on the West side of the Capitol. Those protesters will lobby against Democrats' health care bills in large part because they include a public option.."
Congress is getting it from all sides. Their compromises with the insurance industry infuriate progressives and as weak as what's left of a public option is, the right are protesting it's inclusion. You can't please everyone so you may as well have a single payer system, medicare for all, problem solved, which is what is buzzing about as we hear that Pelosi is allowing a vote on the Weiner amendment for a single payer system!

Nine protesters were arrested Thursday in a demonstration at the office of Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) to demand that he pledge to stop accepting from the health insurance industry.
Lieberman, who last week said he would join a GOP filibuster of any health care bill with a government-run public option, has accepted about $1.5 million from health professionals and insurance agencies since 2003, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Twenty protesters, including four students from the University of Connecticut, marched into the senator's office in the morning and demanded to speak with him. Aides denied their request, offering constituents a closed-door meeting with two legislative aides, which was rejected. Nine protesters then staged a sit-in, saying they would not leave the office until they could have a discussion with the senator in person.
"We're waiting to see if the senator for Aetna is ready to be the senator for the people," explained one protester, Kai, who wouldn't give his last name. Aetna has spent over two million dollars on lobbying in 2009, and has donated $65,000 to Lieberman's campaign committee.
Within 10 minutes of the protesters' arrival, Capitol police were on the scene. They dragged away nine protesters, including two of Lieberman's Connecticut constituents, as Senate staffers watched from the lobby and office hallways.
After the arrests, five of the remaining protesters continued on to Lieberman's committee hearing, which was already underway. They stood in the back of the chamber and quietly held up signs reading "Patients Not Profits" and "Insurance $$$ Makes Me Sick."
"It's ironic Lieberman is chairing this meeting on corporate crimes," said Medea Benjamin, who characterized the practice of accepting campaign donations from health insurance companies as criminal.

Feinstein is Paid Off $300,000 to Oppose Heath Care Reform
"I'm concerned that there not be another entitlement," Feinstein said. "Entitlements are well over 50 percent of every dollar the federal government spends this year and are going straight up. If you add more entitlements, it's a problem."
Of course, Feinstein doesn't seem to worry about health care costs when they are spent on her career. The industry is the sixth-largest donor to Feinstein's campaign funds since 2005, contributing over $300,000.
This is the biggest problem with health care reform in Washington. Too many Congressmen are on insurance company campaign contribution (i.e. payoff?) payrolls. The proposed legislation that will tax those who make over one million dollars will tax them. Certainly it is in their best selfish interest to vote down anything that exclusively taxes their income level or the income of thier supporters like rich insurance company executives.

Film on fight to save northern Michigan pristine forests, streams from acid & uranium mining madness
Some of Michigan's elected officials - like Governor Jennifer Granholm - are selling out the beautiful streams and lush forests of the Upper Peninsula in exchange for some quick cash.
Many people who once loved our governor - now think Granholm doesn't deserve to be a democrat - because she's acting like a Republican.
Granholm and others - like famous actor/director Jeff Daniels - proclaim their love for the Upper Peninsula but are remaining strangely silent in the fight to stop Kennecott Minerals and other mining companies from building sulfide mines nicknamed "acid" mines.
Granholm, Daniels and others with power should be leading the fight to stop the Eagle Project.
In fact - the governor's top Upper Peninsula aide - her point man on the mine issue - recently quit his job to take a lucrative position with Kennecott''s parent company. That speaks volumes as the gov remains tight-lipped.
The National Wildlife Federation has produced a documentary about the gallant fight to protect the Upper Peninsula.

Lead researcher on BPA study accepts $5 million from industry
Charles Gelman, a retired manufacturer of syringes and medical filtration devices who considers Bisphenol A (BPA) to be "perfectly safe", gave $5 million to the research center headed by Martin Philbert, the chairman of a Food and Drug Administration panel about to rule on the chemical's safety. The donation is nearly 25 times larger than the $210,000 annual budget of the University of Michigan Risk Science Center, where Philbert is founder and co-director. Philbert failed to disclose the donation to the FDA, and agency officials only learned of it through reporters.
Gelman, who was once called "the second worst polluter in Michigan" by the state's Department of Natural Resources said he considers the chemical, which is used to make baby bottles, reusable food containers and plastic wraps, to be safe. Worries about health risks posed by the chemical are exaggerated by "mothers' groups and others who don't know the science," Gelman said.
Apparently Gelman is ignorant of the fact that most studies on BPA have linked the chemical to cancer, heart disease, ADHD and reproductive failures in lab animals; those that didn't find harm overwhelmingly were paid for by the chemical industry.
More than 90 percent of people over the age of six test positive for BPA in the body, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The levels present in the average American are far greater than the levels present in the animals under study that have documented the damaging health effects of BPA. It should be noted that no level has ever been found in animal experiments that doesn't cause harm. Gelman said he had made his views on BPA clear to Philbert in several conversations. Philbert denied that.
"At no time have the Gelman family or any other interested/disinterested person, persons, corporations or other entity contacted me or attempted to influence my scientific judgment on the matter," Philbert wrote in an e-mail.
Philbert's committee is expected to release its opinion this month. It will advise the FDA on a draft assessment released by the agency in September. It should come as no surprise that the draft found that products made with BPA are safe for food storage.
The decision of Philbert's committee is expected to have huge implications on the regulation and sale of the chemical in items such as baby bottles, reusable food containers and plastic wraps.
Gelman said he and Philbert talk often. He said Philbert eventually told him that he did not want to have any more discussions on the subject of BPA because he was concerned about the appearance of impropriety. But, Gelman said, "He knows where I stand."
Philbert steadfastly denied any conflict of interest, stating "until today, no question has been raised with respect to my impartiality in this matter," he wrote in an e-mail. "I am not open to any undue influence and have taken on this (unwelcome) task with all due diligence and seriousness."
If a $5 million donation from an individual with a strong, vested interest in the outcome of the study is not considered a blatant impropriety, one has to ask the question, what is?

Inquiry into Florida congressman's pay-off to alleged mistress begins
Congressman Tim Mahoney's predecessor was forced to resign in a media firestorm over tawdry instant messages with teenagers. Now Mahoney has a sex scandal of his own, as an ethics inquiry begins into his $121,000 payment to an alleged former mistress.
Members of Mahoney's staff told ABC news yesterday that the married Democratic congressman promised to pay Patricia Allen after she quit his staff and threatened a lawsuit against him.
Mahoney, who represents the area near Palm Beach, Florida, appeared at a press conference today to deny that the promised payment was intended as hush money to Allen.
"I would have come forward earlier, but making sure my family is OK is far more important than any political career," Mahoney said. "I have not violated my oath of office, nor have I violated any laws, and I consider this to be a private matter."
Mahoney has joined Democratic congressional leaders in recommending an ethics investigation of the alleged pay-off promise. That inquiry is likely to jeopardise his already uncertain chances of re-election next month in a district that favoured George Bush in both 2000 and 2004.
Mahoney was elected last year after the resignation of Republican Mark Foley, who became a worldwide punchline after the media reported on sexually explicit online messages he sent to teenage boys who worked on Capitol Hill.
Conscious of the alarm over Foley's behaviour, Mahoney made family values a centrepiece of his campaign for Congress. One of his adverts featured the slogan "faith and family".
As soon as he arrived in Washington, Mahoney began paying Allen a $36,000 annual salary. Allen's camp claims that she attempted to quit after learning that Mahoney was conducting other extramarital affairs.
A recording of a January conversation between the congressman and Allen was provided to ABC news. On the tape, Mahoney is heard telling her, "you work at my pleasure".
"If you do the job that I think you should do, you get to keep your job. Whenever I don't feel like you're doing your job, then you lose your job," Mahoney told Allen.
She retorted with a charged allegation: "You're firing me for other reasons. You don't, you're not man enough to say it."

Lehman, Merrill Lynch, big donors to Obama and McCain
Barack Obama and John McCain, who criticized and called for more regulation of Wall Street yesterday, count Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. and Merrill Lynch & Co. among the biggest donors to their presidential campaigns.
Both Obama and McCain have received more contributions from employees of securities and investment companies than from any other donors; both are now calling for regulations the industry has resisted.
Through July 31, the last month for which figures are available, employees working for securities and investment firms, and their families, gave $9.9 million to Obama, a Democratic senator from Illinois. They gave $6.9 million to McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona.
Overall, these donors have given $685 million to federal campaigns and the parties from 1989 to 2008, according to the Washington-based Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks political giving.
``The price for that is the economic system we're currently in,'' said former Representative Bob Edgar, a Pennsylvania Democrat who now heads Common Cause, a Washington-based advocacy group.
