PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) Patrick Johnson's grandmother apparently had her hands full with the 19-year-old who family members say had the mental capacity of a 5-year-old; at least a dozen times this year she called 911 when he "acted up" and she couldn't calm him down on her own, just as she did Thursday afternoon.
But Thursday's call would end with Johnson dead, and questions about excessive police force.
According to police, at around 12:30 Thursday afternoon, two 911 calls, one by Johnson himself, were made to report a "person with a weapon." When police arrived they found an agitated Johnson pacing back and forth from the house into the front yard. Police say he was breaking things and grabbing sticks or tree branches, which he tried to set on fire by using the kitchen stove, according to CBS affiliate KYW.
Michelle Rynkiewicz, Johnson's cousin, told KYW that Johnson was "severely retarded" and may not have understood the gravity of the situation.
"He apparently had a stick in his hand or something and he wouldn't put it down but you have to remember he has the mind of a 5 year old." Rynkiewicz said.
Police said when officers arrived, Johnson confronted them with a stick and at one point tried to set it on fire. They say that officers trained in crisis-intervention were called to the scene but that Johnson failed to respond to repeated verbal requests to calm down, and that a Taser gun had to be used to subdue him.
"It had no effect," said Philadelphia police spokesman Frank Vanore.
A second Taser shot was apparently fired and Johnson dropped to the ground. He died at Nazareth Hospital at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, KYW reported.
Police are waiting on autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death and whether the police stun guns contributed to or caused the death.
But for Rynkiewicz the only thing she can think about is her cousin, "I'm upset. I mean he was a young boy and now he's dead."

Lost wars, nostalgia for the majestic greatness, economic and political crises make up perfect grounds for the extremist, nationalistic and purely fascist organizations. It’s only JOBBIK that openly tells the truth about its sympathies towards Nazism but the line that separates the slightly more civilized ultra-rights from the outright Hungarian fascist is so thin that the threat of the European fascistization doesn’t look that unreal anymore.
Twenty years ago Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz, having paraphrased the Marxism classics, said: "Ghost is wandering across the Europe, ghost of the nationalism this is". In a contemporary Europe nationalists, balancing on the verge of fascism, have become a visible power. While in June of 2009 JOBBIK obtained only 3 mandates at the European Parliament elections, mind that it would be 13 deputies from the United Kingdom Independent Party, 4 representatives of Dutch People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy, 3 members of the Greater Romania Party, 2 members of the Bulgarian National Union Attack, 2 members from the Austrian Freedom Party, 2 members from Danish People’s Party, 1 deputy from the Slovak National Party and one more deputy from the True Finns Party who will take the seats besides them.
All of them are unified by the extremist nationalism, euro-skepticism and xenophobia. It’s only JOBBIK that openly tells the truth about its sympathies towards Nazism but the line that separates the slightly more civilized ultra-rights from the outright Hungarian fascist is so thin that the threat of the European fascistization doesn’t look that unreal anymore.

Burgeoning fascists look no further, a developer in Italy has put Mussolini's greatest hits in the palm of your hand. Many are outraged over iMussolini, an iPhone app featuring the dictator's speeches. The creator says asserts that "this history-related application does not celebrate fascism."
Whether those were his intentions or not this item has become a top seller. Since January 21st, it has become the second most popular app on Italian iTunes.
Der Spiegel reports that the creator is thinking about developing new apps "but to avoid any scandals, perhaps they will be about people like Gandhi."
It's scary that people are buying this app. I wouldn't buy this app, because I am thoroughly anti-fascist. And I don't have an iPhone.Burgeoning fascists look no further, a developer in Italy has put Mussolini's... more

Several years ago, Morgen and I visited Germany—more specifically, the region in southeastern Germany known as Bavaria. Although Germany ranks third in per-capita beer consumption (after the Czech Republic and Ireland), it is clearly a place where people take their beer very seriously. Bavaria, in particular, is home to the oldest (non-religious) legal standard of food production still in force: The legendary Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, known in German as the Reinheitsgebot.
The Duke of Beers
The short version of this law, which was enacted on April 23, 1516 by Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV (a.k.a. William IV), is that beer may contain only three ingredients: barley, hops, and water. Ostensibly, this makes the law one of the oldest “consumer protection” regulations, instilling confidence in purchasers that the beer they get will contain no questionable grains or additives. (Among the additives the law sought to ban were some commonly used herbs that had hallucinogenic effects.)Several years ago, Morgen and I visited Germany—more specifically, the region in... more

The GOP has either allied themselves with the bigot-based 'tea bagger' movement or it is the instigator of it. Just when I had come to believe that the GOP could not possibly sink lower, it is now clear to me that this endemically bigoted party is positioned to exceed all previous lies, idiocy and hate talk spewed on that party's behalf by Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and a legion of venom filled wannabes. Indeed, the GOP --apres Bush --is a deluge, a jack-booted army of right wing hate mongers. The GOP has either allied themselves with the bigot-based 'tea bagger'... more

Columbia police have denied a request from a neo-Nazi group to march Nov. 8, saying they do not have the personnel to man both the parade and the University of Missouri home football game against Kansas State University that day.
Steven Boswell of the Missouri chapter of the National Socialist Movement submitted an application for a parade and special event permit Friday to march from Watson Place near MU to the Boone County Courthouse, where his group is proposing to rally from noon to 5 p.m.
The same group held a rally in downtown Columbia on March 12, 2007. It attracted hundreds of onlookers, some of whom reacted with anger to the presence of the dozen or so neo-Nazis who turned out for the procession. More than 50 Columbia police officers were on hand to keep the two groups separated, and police expect a similar show of force will be needed the next time the group marches in Columbia.Columbia police have denied a request from a neo-Nazi group to march Nov. 8, saying... more
