Get what you want, when you want it. That's the phrase that has dominated the entertainment industry over the past decade. New technologies have given us access to countless channels for music, television and film — and we can sample them whenever we find it convenient. But as the options multiply, are we losing our sense of a common culture?
Take "The Outing," the Seinfeld episode in which a reporter thought Jerry and George were lovers. Even if you didn't see it — not that there's anything wrong with that — you heard about it: at work, at school, in the checkout line at the grocery store. And suddenly the show about nothing, says Stanford University communications professor Clifford Nass, meant something even to people who didn't watch it.
"That's really what marks cultural touchstones," says Nass. "Things that people are aware of; that they can share; that they can make reference to — that they don't actually have to consume themselves."
More than 40 percent of American households saw the final episode of Seinfeld in the spring of 1998, according to the Nielsen ratings company. Fast-forward about 11 years: American Idol may be the most popular program on television today, but only about 16 percent of American households saw this year's finale.

UPDATED: Freshman Rep. Parker Griffith (D-Ala.) on Tuesday will announce he is switching parties to become a Republican.
An Alabama Republican Party source confirmed that Griffith, a Blue Dog Democrat, will make the announcement at 1 p.m.
Sources tell The Hill that GOP lawmakers in the Alabama delegation, including Rep. Robert Aderholt, began wooing Griffith several weeks ago.
Griffith occupies one of the most conservative districts held by a Democrat, but he replaced Democratic Rep. Bud Cramer (Ala.) in a seat that has stayed Democratic even as the South has trended Republican in federal elections.
Despite his vulnerable district, Griffith had yet to draw a top-flight GOP challenger. Madison County Commissioner Mo Brooks and businessman Les Phillip each raised modest money for the race, with Phillip self-funding a little bit.
Griffith has bucked his party on nearly all of the items at the top of its legislative agenda.
This month he voted against the Democrats' bills on financial regulatory reform, estate tax, and the omnibus. He was one of four Democrats to oppose healthcare reform, climate change and the stimulus package. The other three were Reps. Bobby Bright (Ala.), Walt Minnick (Idaho) and Gene Taylor (Miss.).
Griffith said in August that he would not back Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for House Speaker again because she is too divisive.
"I would not vote for her. Someone that divisive and that polarizing cannot bring us together," he told the Huntsville Times. "If she doesn't like it, I've got a gift certificate to the mental health center."
Griffith won the open 5th district by a mere 4 percent in 2008; Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) carried the district with 61 percent in the presidential election.
His announcement comes after four House Democrats in recent weeks declared they would retire without seeking higher office, Reps. Dennis Moore (Kan.), Brian Baird (Wash.), John Tanner (Tenn.) and Bart Gordon (Tenn.)
Republicans now view those four seats as pickup opportunities for the 2010 midterm elections.
Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) welcomed Griffith to the Republican conference via Twitter on Tuesday.
"Welcome aboard!" wrote the congressman on his account.UPDATED: Freshman Rep. Parker Griffith (D-Ala.) on Tuesday will announce he is... more

This is a very intelligent speech about the herd mentality, "the sheeple" and how people are being manipulated by a few in this world.
I know it's old but I have never seen this at Current, and his concepts refer to today society.
He talks about the pyramid structure adopted in every big and small company/organization and how this brings only tiny knowledge, if anything none to the ones at the bottom and the few on top control everything.

Excerpt from the link:
"Exposing the real story behind global events, which shape the future of human existence and the world we leave our children. The veil lifts on an astonishing web of interconnected manipulation to reveal that the same few people, secret societies and organizations control the daily direction of our lives, & how the same people on apparently different sides of politics are actually connected to the same elite organizations. These organizations have the same proven agenda of a world government, a world central bank, a world army, a world currency, and some say a micro-chipped population. "OPPO-SAMES" These apparent opposites in politics are there to persuade us that we are not living in a prison, that we have a choice. Yet these persons are not opposites at all but are part of a one-party state."

These are questions that nobody likes to ask when in private, and even fewer like to discuss in public. Any one of the above questions will immediately be met with a debate unless you happen to be amongst the few of us out there that really do care. During such a debate, you will hear a repeat of the same old argument from a source that probably came off of the good ol’ one eyed idiot box. Having gleaned all the convenient information they need from this glowing cycloptic god, they see no need to burden themselves with verifying what they just saw, after all, if it is on TV then it’s true. The sad fact is that society looks at these questions as taboo; on the flip side they’ll be more then happy to talk about anything else.
I have a small piece to the puzzle in the below sto......

WASHINGTON -- The White House is facing mounting pressure from lawmakers to work harder to rally flagging public support for the war in Afghanistan.
With casualties rising, the administration is struggling to persuade voters that the war can be won or is worth the human and financial costs. Afghanistan is President Barack Obama's top foreign-policy priority, but recent polls show that a majority of voters oppose the war for the first time since the conflict began eight years ago.
With public support for the Afghan war falling rapidly, the Obama administration is getting pushed to focus less on health care and more on Afghanistan. WSJ's Yochi Dreazen reports.
The politics of the war are getting trickier for key American allies as well. A junior minister in Britain's Ministry of Defense resigned Thursday, criticizing his government's strategy in Afghanistan on the eve of a major speech by Prime Minister Gordon Brown about Britain's efforts there.
In the U.S., a growing number of lawmakers say that Mr. Obama needs to make the case for Afghanistan more forcefully -- and more frequently -- than he has done to date.
"The president, unfortunately, because of the crush of everything else, hasn't talked about Afghanistan all that much," said Sen. Bob Casey, a centrist Democrat from Pennsylvania, in an interview. "There's so much on his plate that it has an adverse impact on his ability to spend enough time on Afghanistan."
The president's most extensive recent comments about Afghanistan came in an Aug. 17 speech to a Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Phoenix, where he devoted less than three minutes of a half-hour speech to a conflict he described as "a war of necessity." Since then, most of Mr. Obama's public remarks have focused on health care.WASHINGTON -- The White House is facing mounting pressure from lawmakers to work... more

New York City officials say 919 guns were collected during a one-day buy-back program at six Queens churches.
The program paid $200 to anyone who turned in a gun. A pellet or BB gun was worth $20. The officials say they paid a total of $158,880.
The weekend buy-back results were announced Tuesday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
Since last summer, similar programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island - plus the Queens effort - have netted more than 3,500 guns. More than half of them are handguns.New York City officials say 919 guns were collected during a one-day buy-back program... more

The View's conservative cutie Elizabeth Hasselbeck stunned viewers today by throwing her support behind president-elect Barack Obama.
Executive Producer Barbara Walters asked Hasselbeck, who campaigned with John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin, how she felt after seeing McCain/Palin go down to defeat on election night.
Hasselbeck said her daughter Grace, 3, had asked her who won and who lost the election. "No one lost," Hasselbeck said she told her child. "Seriously, today is a victory for this country."
Hasselbeck said the massive voter turnout and the excitement of the presidential contest inspired her. "I will get in a long line of supporters … for this president," she said.

McCain was speaking today in New Mexico, doing his usual personal attack on Barack Obama, as the stock market plummeted (you can see the ticker next to McCain on the screen, an apt reminder of what McCain and his fellow Republicans represent), and McCain asked the crowd "who is Barack Obama?" Immediately you hear someone yell "terrorist." McCain pauses, the audience laughs, and McCain continues on, not acknowledging, not chastising, not correcting. Oh, but McCain does say in the next sentence that he's upset about all the "angry barrage of insults."
The Washington Post reports on a similar moment at a Palin rally today:
"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.
"Boooo!" said the crowd.
"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.
"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.
"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience. McCain was speaking today in New Mexico, doing his usual personal attack on Barack... more

Kucinich Announces Plan for Ownership Society
Congressman Dennis Kucinich D-OH today made the following statement announcing a plan for a new Ownership Society:
“The Wall Street financial disaster is an opportunity to create a genuine ownership society. If Congress invests $700 billion in the market, then the American people must get something of real value for their investment.
“Simply purchasing bad debt, “cash for trash” and not receiving anything of value or giving $700 billion and not having a commensurate equity interest in Wall Street firms is unacceptable. No “cash for trash”.
“Since the bailout will cost each and every American about $2,300, tomorrow I will offer legislation to create a United States Mutual Trust Fund, which will take control of $700 billion in stock assets, at market value and not higher, convert those assets to shares, and distribute $2,300 worth of shares to new individual savings accounts in the name of each and every American.”
Kucinich arrived at the $2,300 figure by dividing the cost of the bailout $700 billion by the US population over 300 million.

The Bush administration, moving to prevent an economic cataclysm, urged Congress on Friday to grant it far-reaching emergency powers to buy hundreds of billions of dollars in distressed mortgages despite many unknowns about how the plan would work.
Henry M. Paulson Jr., the Treasury secretary, made it clear that the upfront cost of the rescue proposal could easily be $500 billion, and outside experts predicted that it could reach $1 trillion.
The outlines of the plan, described in conference calls to lawmakers on Friday, include buying assets only from United States financial institutions — but not hedge funds — and hiring outside advisers who would work for the Treasury, rather than creating a separate agency. Democratic leaders immediately pledged to work closely with Mr. Paulson to pass a plan in the next week, but they also demanded that the measure include relief for deeply indebted homeowners, not just for banks and Wall Street firms.
At the end of a week that will be long remembered for the wrenching changes it brought to Wall Street and Washington, Mr. Paulson and Ben S. Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, told lawmakers that the financial system had come perilously close to collapse. According to notes taken by one participant in a call to House members, Mr. Paulson said that the failure to pass a broad rescue plan would lead to nothing short of disaster. Mr. Bernanke said that Wall Street had plunged into a full-scale panic, and warned lawmakers that their own constituents were in danger of losing money on holdings in ultra-conservative money market funds.
I'm having deja vu all over again. Does this not sound suspiciously familiar to anyone? Scare the hell out of everyone, ram legislation through Congress without giving anyone time to read and understand said legislation, stuff all kinds of new powers for the executive, spend $100's of billions of OUR TAX DOLLARS, and PRESTO, UNPATRIOT ACT II.
I understand that something needs to be done about this crises but something of this magnitude CAN'T be done in a week!! It took years for the current situation to unfold, I don't think taking a few extra weeks to fully understand what needs to be done is really going to cause a complete meltdown of the economy. Have we not learned ANYTHING about how these crooked bastards work over the last 8 years?! Come on people, we need to keep our heads on straight.
