People living in residential areas with high levels of noise from road traffic appear to suffer more heart attacks than people living in quieter neighborhoods, according to a new study by researchers at the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.
Goran Pershagen, who led the study, said 1571 people from the Stockholm area who had suffered heart attacks between 1992 and 1994 were compared with a control group from the same area. The addresses of all the individuals were indentified and the level of noise estimated.
Exposure to air pollution and other heart attack risk factors were also gathered using questionnaires and interviews, the researchers said. Once people with impaired hearing or exposure to other sources of noise had been eliminated from the study, the researchers found that there was a 40 percent higher risk of a heart attack in people exposed to traffic noise exceeding 50 decibels — a relatively quiet level of noise; heavy traffic is usually measured at between 80 and 90 decibels.
"More research will be needed to establish a definite correlation between road traffic noise and [heart attacks], but our results are supported by other studies showing the cardiovascular effects of noise," Pershagen said.People living in residential areas with high levels of noise from road traffic appear... more

A group of California state legislators, known for being backed by polluting special interests, is demanding that the governor and legislature roll back some of California's most important health and environmental protections in exchange for their votes on a revised state budget. These protections save the state billions of dollars in health care every year, and yet, instead of standing up for our public health and cherished natural resources, the governor seems willing to give in to these unnecessary demands that are unrelated to actually solving the budget crisis.
Please support senate and assembly leadership who are standing firm in the face of enormous pressure to compromise on environmental protections--urge Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the legislature not to trade away the health and safety of Californians as part of budget negotiations.
Please make your letter personal by adding in your own thoughts and concerns. Every letter makes a difference, but customized letters have the greatest effect!
Budget: Don't trade CA health, environmental protections for budget votes. Please sign up, log-in and send a letter to the Governor voicing your concern.

A majority of Americans support a cap on carbon pollution -- but you wouldn't know it from what you read in the papers or see on the news.
Across the country, those who want to keep America addicted to fossil fuel are making gross misstatements about clean energy -- and the media has been playing right along.
In one case, opponents of clean energy misquoted an MIT study so badly that the author wrote to them in protest, saying their claims were "just wrong. It's wrong in so many ways it's hard to begin."
Of course, they didn't stop, and their misleading statements were repeated on TV and in newspapers across the country.
You know the truth, and right now your voice is the most powerful tool we have to set the record straight on the carbon pollution loophole.
Will you send a message to your local paper using our simple tool?
Your "Letter to the Editor" will make a powerful impact when it is published: These letters are read by millions of people each day. Your letter will show that Americans across the country support a clean energy future and will help news outlets shape their coverage of this issue.
These letters are also a good way to reach your members of Congress since many read the newspaper opinion pages every day.
Our opponents want to scare Americans out of supporting change. Your letter will show that it won't work. That we're not afraid and that the most costly mistake we can make is doing nothing at all.
By using our simple online tool, you can write and send your letter very easily. And we've provided all the talking points you need to make it effective.
We can't let opportunities for a better future be derailed by fear and misinformation.

There may be music playing, but not everyone in Brooklyn feels like dancing in the streets.
Only 32% of Brooklynites feel the city is doing a good job of controlling street noise, according to Mayor Bloomberg's Citywide Customer Survey.
Brownsville was the borough's noisiest neighborhood with a mere 18% of residents believing the city does an adequate job of preventing roadside racket.
"Sometimes I don't get enough sleep because of all the noise," said Alba Martinez, 22, a student who lives on Chester St.

Target: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar
Sponsored by: The Wilderness Society
At the tail end of the Bush administration, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) worked overtime to rush through "midnight" regulations - making huge tracts of public lands in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming available for commercial oil shale development with sweetheart terms and few environmental protections.
Using current technologies, commercial oil shale development would result in one of the dirtiest fossil fuels the world has ever seen. It would require an extraordinary amount of water and energy in order to turn the waxy kerogen embedded deep within the rock into a synthetic oil substitute. This highly polluting process literally bakes the rock at 500 to 1,000 degrees for more than a year just to liquefy and extract the synthetic crude.
Luckily, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar is making efforts to overturn Bush administration policies, but he needs to know that his actions have full public support! Tell Secretary Salazar that you oppose reckless oil shale development.Target: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar

After a decade of nothing being done to address this serious environmental problem, let's see what Lisa Jackson does under the Obama administration. She will have to coordinate her efforts with Tom Vilsack of the USDA, and that may prove to be a sticky situation if he has to put pressure on Monsanto and other agribusiness companies (factory farms) whose phosphate herbicides and fertilizers are contributing in great part to this problem. Monsanto knowingly poisoned an entire town in Alabama with PCBs. Now their chemicals along with other toxic runoff and fertilizers poison our waterways. It has to end. After a decade of nothing being done to address this serious environmental problem,... more
