It's not easy to get 35 Republican senators to vote against defense spending -- unless hate crimes legislation is involved.
The Senate narrowly invoked cloture on Thursday, 64 to 35, on the defense authorization package with the bill named for Matthew Shepard attached. The bill, named for a gay Wyoming teenager who was kidnapped and beaten to death in 1998, makes it a federal crime to assault someone on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) has filed an amendment to the $32.1 billion FY10 Interior-Environment appropriations bill that would block any of the bill’s funds from being used to carry out orders from Carol Browner, director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, who is often referred to in the press as the White House “climate czar“:
Lawmakers have filed more than 20 amendments to the $32.1 billion FY10 Interior-Environment appropriations bill, including a proposal from Sen. David Vitter, R-La., that would prohibit any of the bill’s funds from being used to carry out directives from the White House climate change czar.
The amendment will ensure the climate czar is not directing actions of the departments and agencies funded in the bill, Vitter said.
While the right may be dedicated to portraying Browner’s position as unaccountable, unprecedented, and even “radical,” the fact is that Browner was originally brought into the executive branch as head of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1993 — a position in which she was unanimously approved by the Senate.
Since taking her role, Browner has been a vital part of efforts to combat climate change. She was involved in negotiating crucial new emissions standards with automakers last spring, and is a major part of congressional discussions over cap and trade.
Vitter’s amendment is likely more motivated by his anti-environmental views than any of his absurd claims that the White House’s use of special advisers is “unconstitutional.” In 2008, Vitter recieved the lowest possible rating — 0 percent — from three leading environmental groups: Environment America, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund. Last summer, Vitter told a room full of Exxon Mobil employees that he doesn’t think the science of global warming isn’t “clear and settled,” and has made opposition to climate change legislation one of his major priorities.Sen. A Florida man is going to be serving 2 years in jail for venting his frustration with police through song lyrics. Twenty year old rapper T.O., whose real name is Antavio Johnson began serving his 2 year term on July 24. His song 'Kill me a cop' has lyrics talking about doing just that, killing a cop. Lawyers say this was a way for T.O. to vent his frustration after being harrassed by police, and never had the intentions of killing a cop.
So much for the first amendment.A Florida man is going to be serving 2 years in jail for venting his frustration with... more

Marine biologist, author, fisherma’am, and Exxon Valdez survivor, Dr. Riki Ott explains:
In my book, Not One Drop, I answer the question I frequently heard on the streets in Cordova, Alaska after the Supreme Court let Exxon off the hook for the Valdez oil spill. (It’s a small town where people often visit in groups on Main Street or at the post office.) How did corporations get so big where they could manipulate our legal system?
As survivors of the Exxon Valdez spill and 20-year lawsuit, practically everyone in town has first-hand experience with a legal system that failed to deliver justice and Exxon’s promise to make us whole.
In researching our nation’s legal history, I found the answer. In this 4-minute video, I explain the solution—passing the 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution: separation of corporation and state.
Please listen. Then ask others to listen. In Not One Drop, I explain this idea more fully. Together we can build a movement to restore government of, for, and by the people.Marine biologist, author, fisherma’am, and Exxon Valdez survivor, Dr. Riki Ott... more

TALLAHASSEE - Florida voters approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage Tuesday, handing a victory to social conservatives who pumped millions into the ballot drive aimed at ensuring the courts cannot legalize same-sex unions in the Sunshine State
After a fierce battle waged on TV airwaves, Amendment 2 was poised to comfortably clear the 60 percent threshold to become law, with 62.1 percent, according to unofficial election results with most precincts reporting this morning. It defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Voters "don't want what happened in Massachusetts, California, Connecticut to happen here in Florida," said John Stemberger, who ran the Yes 2 Marriage campaign.
A well-funded opposition to Amendment 2 sought to portray the ban as overreaching, arguing the amendment's broad, vague wording could cast legal doubt on domestic partner benefits for unmarried, heterosexual couples.
The Yes 2 Marriage campaign was bankrolled by the religious right, including Florida Family Action, the Florida Catholic Conference and the Florida Baptist Convention. Opponents drew heavily from wealthy individual donors and from a gay-rights group, the Human Rights Campaign.

First they raise your taxes and now they want to raise your children. House Speaker was quoted as saying that your children are wards of the state. Parent's disagree and believe their children should be raised and cared for by parents not the state.
The link takes you to several guest speakers, including several legislators, family rights organizations, and more.
Lansing, Michigan. Several Michigan State Legislators voiced their positions and willingness to "press the button now" to allow voters the chance to approve a landmark parental rights amendment to the Michigan State Constitution. "Michigan Legislators and Family Rights Organizations from West Virginia, Florida, Ohio, and Michigan were present and in support of House Joint Resolution NN, which is the first of its kind nationwide," according to Lary Holland, Executive Director of Write to Parent, Inc.
Where does Obama and McCain stand on Parental Rights? McCain calls it a tar baby and Obama just wants to blame black fathers.
What we have in Michigan is a Democratic leadership that has literally violated Article IV Section 16 of our Constitution that aims to prevent these type of tactics by the house "rules" that cover the passage of our bills. If you have no right to parent, then you really have no other rights at all. First they raise your taxes and now they want to raise your children. House Speaker... more
