1950-ongoing : WORLDWIDE.
George Orwell's grim novel of totalitarianism, 1984, and his satirical political novel, Animal Farm, describe all too well the mechanisms of oppression and distortion of the truth by the state and the realities of political power. Orwell was opposed to totalitarianism in all its forms, whether Stalinist, fascist or pseudo-democratic. Ironically, Orwell had unknowingly fallen into the clutches of the very propagandists and distorters of truth he vilified and satirized. His British publisher, Fredric Warburg, was secretly working for the CIA. Warburg would later become notorious for publishing and distributing a CIA propaganda magazine, Encounter, for one of the CIA's countless front organizations, the ironically named Congress for Cultural Freedom.
Following Orwell's death in 1950, Warburg persuades his widow to unwittingly sell the movie rights to 1984 and Animal Farm to the CIA's Office of Policy Coordination (OPC), a creation of Rockefeller cousin, Hitler Project kingpin and Nazi shyster cum CIA head, Allen Dulles. According to its secret charter, OPC's activities on behalf of the "free" world include propaganda, economic warfare, sabotage, demolition and subversion. Two of the CIA's Psychological Warfare Workshop staff obtain the screen rights to Orwell's novels. The head of the operation is none other than CIA operative Howard Hunt, who will later become infamous as a member of the Watergate gang of criminals. Hunt selects Louis De Rochemont to be the producer of the animated Animal Farm at Paramount. De Rochemont has considerable experience with propaganda, having created The March of Time series for Henry Luce and, during the Second World War, working with the U.S. Navy's propaganda film unit. To meet the CIA's objectives, the ending of Animal Farm is changed and the point of the story, that cruel capitalist farmers are no better masters than tyrannical Stalinist pigs, is destroyed.
The CIA's sanitized version of Animal Farm is distributed around the world by a CIA front, the U.S. "Information" Agency (USIA). The CIA then produces 1984 in Britain in 1954. Inevitably, Orwell's message is distorted and perverted by the CIA to suit the goals of the U.S. ruling class.
The CIA's Orwellian sabotage of two of the most powerful political works in literature is a masterstroke of pre-emptive mind control. As the psychological warfare experts at the CIA are only too aware, a successful movie, like television, can be seen by tens or hundreds of millions of people and, consisting of graphic images, is much more powerful and widely assimilated than the written word. By sabotaging the movie versions of 1984 and Animal Farm, the CIA effectively stopped the vast majority of Americans ever learning of the relevance of Orwell's writing to their own situation.
The role of the CIA in sabotaging Orwell's masterpieces is hidden for half a century. To the present day, many American school teachers use the CIA's movie version of 1984 to "teach" the novel, spoonfeeding young Americans "prolefeed" created by the CIA rather than the true, chilling and all too relevant message of Orwell's book.1950-ongoing : WORLDWIDE.

Hello and Happy New Year from an American friend. I hope your new year is one that offers both health, spirtual enlightenment and an opportunity to learn what you have gotten yourself into before its too late. Take a look at that man beside you, the one who will some day hand you a bomb and tell you to kill yourself and, maybe, dozens of women and children, many Muslims. Are you really sure he is who he says he is? Like the "Al Qaeda" leaders in Yemen, you know, the ones who Dick Cheney decided to release for some unknown reason, are you, maybe, taking orders from someone like this?
You remember Usama bin Laden, Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallams, do you not? Remember why he said he had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks? He said the Koran would not allow it. Does not the Koran say this is sin? Look at poor Abdulmutallab, sitting in a prison in Milan, Michigan. How do you think he was helped thru airport after airport, all run by Israelis, put on a plane full of Muslims, men, women, families, going back to their home in Detroit, Fi AmanAllah, with orders to blow it up?
Do you think the people who walked him around passport control at Schipol Airport could have only done so with the highly secure special keys available only to the security company running the airport? Of course you know who these people are.
Let us say your are in Afghanistan. Did you ever wonder where all those brand new weapons come from? Look at the markings. Does it say "Made in India?" So, you are heading into Pakistan to kill Muslims with your new weapons from Israel and India. You think they were free?
Imagine the laughter in Tel Aviv and Mumbai.
You believe you are acting in Fi Sabillah (for the cause of allah)? Do you believe that America goes to war to make money for their defense companies and big oil? Are you aware that much of the ownership of America's military suppliers is from the Middle East? Without money from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the money financing the bombs and planes, Islamic money, would there be a war?
Many say they fight America because it is here, in an Islamic country, supporting a puppet government. America is here to fight you, you are here to fight them. Who is winning? Will you want a government like the Islamic Republic of Iran? There is now little difference between the government there today and the puppet dictatorship of the Shah. Patriots are being murdered by secret police now as they were 40 years ago.
Years ago, when America was cast out of Iran and hostages were taken, did not Iran turn to Israel to bargain with the Americans for weapons to trade? Perhaps giving away your trust without opening your eyes to what can be seen is unwise.
No matter if the US stays in Afghanistan or goes, India and Israel will control the country as they do so many others. If they don't, then China will. Look at the map. Only Pakistan has nuclear weapons, a powerful military and an elected government, albeit problematic and unstable.
You would destroy it and turn it over to India and Israel in the name of Islam.

Powell warned of ‘terror-industrial complex’ in 2007 interview
When MSNBC's Keith Olbermann welcomed three former members of Monty Python to Countdown on Wednesday, his biggest surprise was a question from Terry Gilliam, "How come that Colin Powell interview about the terror-industrial complex didn't become a bigger story?"
Olbermann was taken aback by the question, but by the next day he had uncovered Powell's September 12, 2007 interview with GQ Magazine. Powell's apology in that interview for his use of faulty intelligence prior to the Iraq War grabbed the headlines at the time, but he also delivered a far less-noticed warning against what Olbermann now calls "an entire aspect of the nexus of politics and terror."
"What is the greatest threat facing us now?" Powell asked. "People will say it’s terrorism. But are there any terrorists in the world who can change the American way of life or our political system? No. ... The only thing that can really destroy us is us. We shouldn’t do it to ourselves, and we shouldn’t use fear for political purposes—scaring people to death so they will vote for you, or scaring people to death so that we create a terror-industrial complex."
Observers had been expessing concern about the rise of the homeland security industry for several years prior to Powell's remarks. Tim Shorrock's groundbreaking 2005 article, "The Spy Who Billed Me," revealed how "the government has outsourced everything from spy satellites to covert operations -- and well-connected companies are cashing in." A blog inspired by the article has continued to pursue the subject.
A March 2007 Vanity Fair article on homeland security contractor SAIC and Raw Story's May 2007 expose of a questionable anthrax vaccine maker with Bush administration connections explored other aspects of the emerging terror-industrial complex in the months immediately before the Powell interview. The subject has drawn less attention in the last few years, but the rediscovery of Powell's warning may put it back in the spotlight.

These are men and women who helped to launch wars of aggression or who have been complicit in lesser war crimes. These are not the lowest-ranking employees or troops who managed to stray from official criminal policies. These are the makers of those policies.
The occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have seen the United States target civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, use antipersonnel weapons including cluster bombs in densely settled urban areas, use white phosphorous as a weapon, use depleted uranium weapons, employ a new version of napalm found in Mark 77 firebombs, engage in collective punishment of Iraqi civilian populations - including by blocking roads, cutting electricity and water, destroying fuel stations, planting bombs in farm fields, demolishing houses, and plowing down orchards - detain people without charge or legal process without the rights of prisoners of war, imprison children, torture, and murder.
Because each of the people on this list should be nonviolently protested everywhere they go (more on that below), I have organized them by location. Please post updates on where they are as comments ;)

John Yoo: Professor of Law at Boalt Hall School of Law in Berkeley, California, with house at 1241 Grizzly Peak Blvd., Berkeley, (but a lawyer with the Pennsylvania bar from which he should be disbarred and would be if enough people demanded it) counseled the White House on how to get away with war crimes, wrote this memo promoting presidential power to launch aggressive war, and claimed the power to decree that the federal statutes against torture, assault, maiming, and stalking do not apply to the military in the conduct of the war, and to announce a new definition of torture limiting it to acts causing intense pain or suffering equivalent to pain associated with serious physical injury so severe that death, organ failure or permanent damage resulting in loss of significant body functions will likely result. Yoo claimed in 2005 that a president has the right to enhance an interrogation by crushing the testicles of someone's child. Yoo has been confronted in his classroom: video, and defended by the Washington Post, and again confronted in the classroom.

It probably comes as no surprise to regular C&L readers to learn that I grew up in a liberal-minded household; although at the time, being a kid, I didn't especially realize just how liberal such attitudes were. Our house was filled with books, magazines and newspapers, everything from a revered set of encyclopedias (the Google of the 1960's) to stacks of ratty romance paperbacks. We had at least forty years worth of National Geographic magazines, from which I gleaned juicy facts for hundreds of school reports. I learned to read from Humpty-Dumpty magazines at the age of three and had read Ivanhoe by the time I was seven, although I have to admit I didn't understand much of it at the time.
It didn't matter. What mattered was that nothing was off-limits in our house when it came to the written word. I read Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde and the complete works of Jonathan Swift, the back of cereal boxes, A Little Princess and Mein Kampf and Uncle Tom's Cabin and Black Beauty, Dr. Seuss and Archie comics, a huge box of pulp science-fiction novels from a garage sale, Jehovah's Witness Biblical tracts that got shoved in the letterbox, the perpetual Cherry Ames, Army Nurse novels my grandmother inevitably sent us every Christmas, every book ever written by Philip Wylie, several year's worth of a wonderful science magazine for teens to which my Aunt Ruth gave me a subscription (Build a Working Computer from Empty Matchboxes!), until the magazine went bust and folded. The written word, from high-brow to no-brow, was sacrosanct.
