As we told you before, the Republicans have found themselves in quite a mess when it comes to actual voter fraud, which it appears they are old pros at, with hundreds, if not thousands of registrations being called into question with fake addresses, names of dead people, refusing to register Democrats, etc., and the with the controversy now ballooning, they have been forced to close up shop, even as new reports surface of registration destruction in Nevada...

Ahead of the 2012 elections, a wave of legislation tightening restrictions on voting has suddenly swept across the country. More than 5 million Americans could be affected by the new rules already put in place this year — a number larger than the margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections. via Brennen Center for JusticeAhead of the 2012 elections, a wave of legislation tightening restrictions on voting... more

In 2008, 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn't know how to register. In 2012, we want to make sure no one is left out.
On September 25, 2012, volunteers, celebrities, and organizations from all over the country will "hit the streets" for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts will create pervasive awareness of voter registration opportunities--allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters or more who we could not reach otherwise. In 2008, 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed a registration... more

Suddenly the Republicans are claiming the polls that favor President Obama are skewed. Why? So when they finish rigging voting machines to flip votes, stealing votes to change the real count; when the exit polls are wildly inaccurate, the way they were in the Walker recall election, they’ll be able to say, “See, we told you the polls were unreliable” and everyone will be convinced they were right. Conned again.Suddenly the Republicans are claiming the polls that favor President Obama are skewed.... more

Obama, Mitt, white dudes with two first names... I know what you're thinking: After the "Romney Gone Wild" video in which the Republican presidential candidate might as well have sucker punched a handicapped child, are the elections even relevant anymore? Well for the next 3 minutes and 20 seconds they will be. As someone who sheds a crocodile tear every time she votes for the lesser of two evils, I am always left thinking of the biggest evil of all: our broke-ass political system.

Republic Report has covered how political money can corrupt government by influencing the actions of elected representatives. But professional hacks can also disrupt democracy by interfering with the voting process itself.
Late last year, Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign began paying Nathan Sproul, a political consultant with a long history of destroying Democratic voter registration forms and manipulating ballot initiatives. Sproul, who changed his firm’s name from Sproul and Associates to Lincoln Strategies, has received over $70,000 from Romney’s campaign. Much of the campaign coverage has focused on the rhetoric of surrogates and the role of high-priced television advertisements. But if Sproul continues to play a role in the campaign, and if his previous work is any guide, his firm may have an impact on key swing states.
ThinkProgress covered Sproul and his work for the coal industry. The post, which is partially reprinted below, goes through his greatest hits, including evidence that his firm systematically suppressed Democratic overs on behalf of the Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential team and deceiving voters during registration drives in 2006:
- In Oregon and Nevada, Lincoln Strategies — then known as Sproul and Associates — was investigated for destroying Democratic voter registration forms. The Bush-Cheney 2004 presidential campaign paid Sproul $7.4 million for campaign work. [CNN, 10/14/04; KGW News, 10/13/04; East Valley Tribune, 09/07/06]
- In Nevada, people who registered as Democrats with Lincoln Strategies — then known as Sproul and Associates — found their names absent from the voter registration rolls. [Reno Gazette-Journal, 10/29/04]
- During the 2006 midterm elections, Wal-Mart banned Lincoln Strategies for partisan voter registration efforts in Tennessee. The Republican National Committee had hired the firm. [Associated Press, 08/24/06]
- In Arizona, Lincoln Strategies employed a variety of deceptive tactics — including systematically lying about the bill — to push a ballot initiative to eviscerate the state’s clean elections law. [Salon, 10/21/04]
- Lincoln Strategies, then employed by the Republican Party, was behind efforts to place Ralph Nader on the ballot in states such as Arizona. [American Prospect, 06/25/04]
Though Romney and his allies have decried supposed voter fraud by his opponents, they don’t have any evidence that people are illegally voting. Most accusations of Democratic voter fraud center on registration forms filled out by fake people — usually because signature gatherers are paid per-form — but these accusations do not include examples of these fake people actually attempting to vote. On the other hand, when a person goes to vote and learns their voter registration form was never turned in, they are denied their rights. Former Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT), during a hearing on voter fraud, admitted that “the difference between ACORN and Sproul is that ACORN doesn’t throw away or change registration documents after they have been filled out.”
Republic Report reviewed disclosures from the Federal Elections Commission. Sproul’s Lincoln Strategy Group has received about $71,391 in payments for “field consulting” and “rent & utilities” by the Romney for President Inc. committee from November 30th through March 2nd of this year.
Lincoln Strategy Group did not respond to multiple requests for comment.Posted at 8:00 am by Lee Fang

Monumental Act of Cowardice! -- Last month, Pennsylvania Judge Robert Simpson upheld Pennsylvania’s Republican voter ID law, one of the strictest in the country, and a law that Republicans admitted was enacted to “allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.” The ACLU appealed the judges ruling and took the matter to the state’s Supreme Court, which vacated Simpson’s order on Tuesday, and, in a show of monumental cowardice, bounced the matter back to the lower court, with instructions to review the implementation of access to the identification stipulated by the law...

It really isn't a big surprise that with the shape the Romney campaign is in and Obama Derangement Disorder infecting the Republican party that an attempt to suppress Voter turn out by Republican Governors would take place. Rather than run on their records or come up with some actual alternatives to the plans put forth by the Obama Administration they'd rather revert to the tricks of the last two centuries. Fortunately it appears that it may not pay off. Although I suggest you still plan for the worst and hope for the best just in case. It's never a good idea to think you've won any type of competition until the results are final. And even then it pays to double check. It really isn't a big surprise that with the shape the Romney campaign is in and... more

Stew Update on Voter Suppression: Husted fired two election board members who supported the expanded early voting, and his reaction to Judge Economus would indicate a strong proclivity for dickishness, which is no surprise. But it could be that Judge Economus will have the final word and put Husted in his place.

Recently, the Republicans in Ohio tried to put the ixnay on early voting in their state through a measure passed last year by the GOP-controlled legislature. The Romney campaign tried to turn this mess on President Obama by accusing him of trying to prevent groups like veterans and firefights and police from voting. However, the veterans caught wind of Romney’s BS and called him on the carpet for it. Meanwhile, the law was being reviewed by federal court, and was struck down last week by a federal judge.
Well, Ohio’s Secretary of State, is having no part of that ruling and is refusing to implement it...

The Romney campaign tried to pull a fast one doing what they do best – lie – in regard to this bill, and tried to accuse the Obama campaign of attempting to suppress the vote, when they were actually trying to expand voter access, especially to veterans and other groups like firefighters and cops, which riled veterans groups, who slammed the Romney camp for their outright lies.

This could be huge, as Florida is the biggest swing state hanging in the balance come November, especially with Medicare on the line for many seniors who reside in that state, who perhaps are feeling jittery with the advent of the Romney/Ryan ticket and their unabashed and unapologetic plans to dismantle the Medicare program as we know it.
