With a debate on the scrappage of the EMA in parliament and cuts to other areas, students are still planning protests and building occupations for later in the month. Organisers of the protests are hoping the action of walk out and teach-outs will gain the support of other groups angry about cuts.
"The demonstration on 26 January is expected to see protesters meet in Trafalgar Square before breaking into smaller protests. There are also plans to stage teach-outs at several London train stations, where campaigners will discuss a wide range of issues from the rise in train fares to the hike in VAT as well as the scrapping of the EMA."-Guardian
Currently an officer for the Counter Terrorism Command emailed universities and colleges about any information on if the protest will be aimed at finance departments. While also advising universities to draft contingency plans against occupations.
Since the email circulation the MET had to issue statement explaining the officers email.
""Although the officer is part of the MPS Counter Terrorism Command, like many Prevent engagement officers, he works with a number of different communities and groups, including university staff and students, covering a range of policing and crime issues and keeps his contacts informed regarding such matters on a regular basis."-GuardianWith a debate on the scrappage of the EMA in parliament and cuts to other areas,... more

Turns out there’s an meteorologist in the UK who predicted last year’s cold winter weather, last summer’s cooler than normal weather, and, this year’s record breaking cold and snow in the UK, predictions the government run Met Office failed to make.
Piers Corbyn, a meteorologist who works in an undistinguished office in Borough High Street. He has no telescope or supercomputer. Armed only with a laptop, huge quantities of publicly available data and a first-class degree in astrophysics, he gets it right again and again.
The now etched into the laugh out loud global warming, climate change historical article reference pieces, an article published in the UK’s Independent written by Charles Onians, entitled "Snowfalls are Now Just A Thing of the Past."Turns out there’s an meteorologist in the UK who predicted last year’s... more

After a report by the New York Times, which claimed NotW journalists informed them that the use of phone hacking was used by many at the paper and was an encouraged practise (or at least discussed in meetings) with the editor of the paper Andy Coulson.
Over the weekend there were calls by Labour party members for a reinvestigation into the hacking after the fresh allegations. Some of the focus on the story has hit Andy Coulson who denies knowing about the hacking within the paper.
"Mr Coulson - who is now David Cameron's director of communications - has received strong backing from Number 10, which says he "totally and utterly" rejects claims he was aware of any wrongdoing."-BBC
Backing for Coulson from the government this weekend came from Gove and May, who said there were no grounds for public inquiry while stating the story comes from newspaper rivalries in the US.
"He said the Met had been clear on its stance and so far had seen no new evidence which would merit reopening the case but it would consider changing its position if that situation changed."-BBC
From reading the article, it sounds like the MET will look at the evidence from the New York Times investigation, and decided if they need to re open the case. After a report by the New York Times, which claimed NotW journalists informed them... more

Four Met police officers will be charged for assaulting a terror suspect in 2003. The officers were members of the terror support group and court document show they beat Babar Ahmad in a prolonged attack.
The article mentions an early inquiry by the Met ended with stating no officer should be disciplined "and prosecutors did not bring criminal charges.". The article also highlights Ahmad is currently in Long Lartin prison after the European court of human rights halted his extradition to the US.
"officers beat and grabbed him around the neck, pulled his testicles and mocked his Islamic faith.
At one point they forced him into a praying position as an officer shouted: "Where is your God now? Pray to him."
Ahmad was also beaten as he lay on the floor of the police van as it took him to Charing Cross police station.
[...] Inquiries into the attack were marked by the loss of key documents, including previous complaints against the officers, and the refusal of some to attend court. "-IndependentFour Met police officers will be charged for assaulting a terror suspect in 2003. The... more

The MET office has completed and released a report, which is said to show the "unmistakable" rise in the worlds temperature over the last three decades. You can read the full report online here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2010/pr20100728.html
The report looked into 10 indicators and "each indicator proved consistent with a warming world."
"Rising indicators
1. Air temperature over land
2. Sea-surface temperature
3. Marine air temperature
4. Sea-level
5. Ocean heat
6. Humidity
7. Tropospheric temperature in the ‘active-weather’ layer of the atmosphere closest to the Earth’s surface
Declining indicator
1. Arctic sea-ice
2. Glaciers
3. Spring snow cover in the northern hemisphere"-MET Office
The article by the Telegraph states new technology allowed research of ocean temperatures, which was useful to the study because the ocean absorbs 90% of the world heat and would be a good indicator to if those temperatures are rising.
The article is an interesting read and talks about the reactions, while also referring to climate gate.
"But climate change sceptics questioned the evidence, especially in the wake of recent scandals like "climategate". [...] Met Office, said “variability” in different regions, such as the cold winter in Britain, does not mean the rest of the world is not warming."-TelegraphThe MET office has completed and released a report, which is said to show the... more

Reports and images from the G20 protests mainly showed the tragic moment when a police officer struck or pushed Ian Tomlinson who collapsed and died afterwards. Tomlinson was caught up in the event when he was walking home.
Today, it was announced there would be no prosecution into the death because of disagreement between medical experts and three post mortems into the cause of Tomlinsons death. Tomlinsons' son called the outcome 'outrageous'.
"Lawyers have examined the video footage as well as CCTV images, photographs and witness statements. [...] The first found the father of nine died of natural causes, the second of internal bleeding and the results of the third, conducted on behalf of the officer, were not made public."-BBCReports and images from the G20 protests mainly showed the tragic moment when a police... more

Metropolitan Police Commander Ali Dizaei, Britain's most senior Asian officer, has been sentenced to four years for perverting the course of justice and misconduct after a row with a web designer who did some work on Dizaei's personal website.
Prosecutor Peter Wright QC said Dizaei was guilty of a "wholesale abuse of power" motivated by self-interest and pride. The shamed policeman was ordered to spend two years in prison and two years on licence.
Dizaei, 47, went on trial accused of abusing his position to arrest a 24-year-old web designer, with whom he'd argued over money owed for web design work. After arresting Waad al-Baghdadi, 23, Dizaei had then fabricated a series of allegations against him and inflicted an injury on himself to back up a claim that the young man had "stabbed" him with the mouthpiece of shisha pipe.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said "criminals in uniform like Dizaei" were the greatest threat to the reputation of the police.Metropolitan Police Commander Ali Dizaei, Britain's most senior Asian officer,... more

The Met Office may be dropped by the BBC following complaints about its inaccurate weather forecasts.
The state-owned forecaster has recently been criticised for predicting it would be a 'mild' winter when we have just shivered in the biggest deep freeze for 30 years. And last year it infamously predicted a 'barbecue summer'.
The blunders could not have come at a worse time for the Met Office, which has provided forecasts for the BBC for nearly 90 years, as its contract with the broadcaster expires in April.

Wind's changing: A Metra graphic used in a BBC News forecast. Metra may take over the Met Office's contract at the BBC
The contract has been put out to tender to ensure 'best value for money' and the BBC has begun talks with Metra, the national forecaster for New Zealand, as a possible alternative.
Metra already produces graphics for the BBC, including the 3D weather map that prompted a flood of complaints when it was introduced in 2005.
Weather Commerce, Metra’s UK subsidiary, has already usurped the Met Office in supplying forecasts to Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose.
A source close to Metra told the Sunday Times: 'The BBC is not happy with the service it has been getting from the Met Office; it thinks it’s too expensive.
'We have the ability to provide a bespoke service that will undercut it. Because we already produce the graphics we’ve got a foot in the door, so we’re optimistic.'

Ian Tomlinson died during the G20 in London this year from bleeding in his stomach after being assaulted by a police officer.
The IPCC has handed has completed its inquiry and handed a file to the Crown Prosecution Service.
The police had been lying from the onset, in a way I would feel sorry if the officer gets convicted. After all, he was only doing what most of the police force was doing that day: beating up peaceful people on the streets. But then, no officer ever got convicted of manslaughter while executing his or her duty, so there's no reason to worry.Ian Tomlinson died during the G20 in London this year from bleeding in his stomach... more
