Hey Currentites,
As you know, we all have wildly different tastes and interests, and while some people might use current strictly to read and discuss the latest news taking place around the world, others manage to find other creative uses for our little home on the Interwebs.
Case in point? Well, take a look at the number one clipper on our top five clippers list from last week:
metalcookiesxy70 (99 stories)
http://current.com/users/metalcookiesxy70/all/0.htm
AwesomeJosh (91 stories)
http://current.com/users/AwesomeJosh/all/0.htm
TWO-WAY TIE!!
pjacobs51 (83 stories)
http://current.com/users/pjacobs51/all/0.htm
TravG73 (83 stories)
http://current.com/users/TravG73/all/0.htm
arcticspirit (63 stories)
http://current.com/users/arcticspirit/all/0.htm
Katanajon (50 items)
http://current.com/users/Katanajon/all/0.htm
metalcookiesxy70's submissions to current may not be your cup of tea, but they certainly are dedicated. So, what is metalcookiesxy70's passion? the musical tones from video games. Their rapid submission rate scored them the top spot on top contributor list this week, and brought back some fond memories.
Take for instance, anyone who spent time trying to hunting around Konami's sequel to Simon Belmont's tango with Dracula will recall the 8-bit theme from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.

Check out this classic from Mega Man 2?

Or, perhaps you prefer something more recent?
http://current.com/items/89643696/gears_of_war_2_music_heroic_assault.htm
Either way, our previous weeks top contributor, AwesomeJosh, was narrowly unseated by metacookiesxy70 by only a margin of 8 stories. Now, I know what many of you might be thinking, "this isn't news!" or "how is this current-related?" Well just keep in mind, everyone's taste is different, which means that everyone's method of participation on Current is going to differ.
As many of you know, we're making some changes to Current:News, and I've been hinting at some bigger changes for Current.com. We're very aware of differing interests on Current, and some of our enhancements set to roll out in the new year will help address this.
Are you geared up to make a run for top contributor next week? First, submit stories like you've never submitted before, but before you do, make sure you have the tools of the trade. Go to our Apps page and try out our Firefox toolbar, or if you're not into Firefox, give our Make Current bookmarklet a whirl.
http://current.com/everywhere
For now, congrats to our top contributors from last week (and to pjacobs51 and TravG73 for our second two-way tie)! Also, congratulations to metalcookiesxy70 for scoring the top spot this week. We'll see what next week brings!
Best,
Mario

For those unfamiliar with our weekly recap posts, I typically try to pull together a quick summary of the previous weeks' top contributors and top commented stories. From now on we're going to try something a little different for a change. Instead of simply listing the top contributors, I'm going to feature a post from the previous week's top contributor in the weekly blog recap.
So to kick things off, let's take a look at last week's top contributors:
AwesomeJosh (78 stories)
http://current.com/users/AwesomeJosh/all/0.htm
TravG73 (66 stories)
http://current.com/users/TravG73/all/0.htm
Katanajon (58 stories)
http://current.com/users/Katanajon/all/0.htm
rudrashahid (52 stories)
http://current.com/users/rudrashahid/all/0.htm
JackHerer (49 stories)
http://current.com/users/JackHerer/all/0.htm
Last week, AwesomeJosh took the top spot for contributions, so let's dive into one of his stories. The one that caught my eye was titled "One-person news crews," and it came from the Washington Post. If you haven't read it yet, check it out:
One-person news crews
http://current.com/items/89617569/one_person_news_crews.htm
The basic concept is that enhancements in technology have made some newsroom gigs redundant, but I also wonder how much citizen journalism plays into this as well. The cost of a fully staffed newsroom may no longer be justified, considering that online video, and up-to-the-minute news reporting via tools like Twitter are at everyone's disposal. I would've loved to hear more from AwesomeJosh about his take on this.
Here are some other eye-catching stories posted by AwesomeJosh last week:
A Sugar Free School
http://current.com/items/89620191/a_sugar_free_school.htm
Jellyfish Gone Wild
http://current.com/items/89617551/jellyfish_gone_wild.htm
Nude Virgin Mary Playboy Cover
http://current.com/items/89617528/nude_virgin_mary_playboy_cover.htm
Mysterious Acorn Shortage
http://current.com/items/89620187/mysterious_acorn_shortage.htm
Congrats AwesomeJosh! Keep up the good work!
Do you want to be in the running for top contributor? First step, engage in clipper fury, but before you go wild consider these tips:
- Get the tools: We just launched a set of tools to help you submit stories from anywhere on the web. Go to our Apps page and try out our Firefox toolbar, or if you're not into Firefox, give our Make Current bookmarklet a whirl. http://current.com/everywhere
- Don't just copy and paste the story: People want to know what you think, so be sure to include some insight. Get a conversation going, and you may find it more rewarding.
- Give them something to look at: Take the time to update your story with an image. If you plan to pull from an image site like Flickr, give credit where credit is due.
- Share and share alike: Use tools like Twitter and Facebook to get more people in on the discussion.
Well, that's it for this week. Be sure to check out AwesomeJosh's profile (and our other four top contributors). Until next week, happy submitting!
Best,
Mario

// Most Commented Stories //
The week before last was dominated by discussions about the plummeting Dow, but apparently last week was back to business at hand: election, election, election. Well, to be fair, there was some excellent discussion around the combat unity deployed on US soil, and INSERT OKLAHOMA ABORTION STORY DETAILS. Aside from that, the topics du jour centered on McCain, Obama, and Palin. Anyone want to throw a Joe Biden story in for good measure? Whoa, how did it get to be Wednesday already? The days are simply flying by, so let's recap last week before it completely gets away from us.
// Hack the Debate III //
As planned, John McCain and Barack Obama faced off last week in the second presidential debate of the election season. Sparks flew, people tweeted, and Dan Rather kept both of the candidates in line, to the best of his ability. We're doing it all again this week with Hack the Debate IV. Hey everyone, welcome to Monday...or mid-Monday. It's time, once again, to wrap up what went down in the Current community last week, so let's jump right in.
// Hack the Debate III //
The much anticipated debate between VP candidates Sarah Palin and Joe Biden rocked the world last Thursday, and it sent ripples throughout the community. Did Palin meet expectations? Did Biden blow her out of the water? Plenty of discussion took place (check out the Most Commented Stories section below), but that's just the beginning.
The stage has been set for John McCain and Barack Obama to meet up once again, this time in a Town Hall setting, and we are all ready to go with Hack the Debate III. That's right, fire up your Twitter account and get ready to #current all night long. Head to our debate page for more details:

He must've struck a chord with people because his pod ended up being last week's VC2 leaderboard winner. Kudos to you, illdoctrine, and thanks for sharing your thoughts on the situation here at home. BTW -- nice Dr. Strangelove reference.
// Top 5 Contributors on Current.com //
