30 members of the GOP opposed an amendment, earlier this month, to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill, which would withhold defense contracts from companies, "if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court." Now -- as it turns out -- the Defense Department was also against the amendment.30 members of the GOP opposed an amendment, earlier this month, to the 2010 Defense... more

Georgia Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss handed the GOP a firewall against Democrats eager to flex their newfound political muscle in Washington, winning a bruising runoff battle Tuesday night that had captured the national limelight.
Chambliss' victory thwarted Democrats' hopes of winning a 60 seat filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. It came after a bitter month long runoff against Democrat Jim Martin that drew political luminaries from both parties to the state and flooded the airwaves with fresh attack ads weeks after campaigns elsewhere had ended.
Minnesota - where a recount is under way - now remains the only unresolved Senate contest in the country. But the stakes there are significantly lower now that Georgia has put a 60-seat Democratic supermajority out of reach.

US Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss has won re-election in a run-off in Georgia, dashing the Democrats' hopes of achieving a "super-majority".
They have 58 Senate seats, but needed 60 to stop any Republican attempts to block legislation with a "filibuster".
The only undecided state is Minnesota, where a recount is under way.
Mr Chambliss and his Democratic opponent were forced into a run-off after neither reached 50% in a three-way race during November's election.
The Democrats won expanded majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and their candidate, Barack Obama, was elected president.
During the campaign, Mr Chambliss promised voters he would act as a "firewall" against a Democrat-controlled Washington.

Obviously, conservative voters were disillusioned with Chambliss, and grassroots Georgians were reluctant to support a country-club Republican who votes for the interests of corporate moguls with an internationalist mindset.
Well, now conservatives are faced with a runoff between Country Club Chambliss and a liberal Democrat with all-out support of President-elect Barack Obama. Obama’s field staff remained in Georgia to turn out the vote for Martin in tomorrow’s runoff.

Associated Press Writer= AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin implored Georgia Republicans to back Sen. Saxby Chambliss in his hotly contested Senate runoff, telling a cheering crowd Monday that the first step in rebuilding the GOP begins with the Southern state.
The former vice presidential candidate made her first campaign appearance since the Republican ticket of John McCain and Palin lost on Nov. 4. Palin's four stops for Chambliss underscored not only the stakes for the GOP in the Senate race but Palin's popularity within the party. She has been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2012, a fact not lost on some Georgia voters.
Several thousand supporters waited in the cold to file into the James Brown Arena in Augusta. Vendors sold bright pink "Palin 2012" T-shirts and "Palin for President: You Go Girl" buttons. She was greeted like a rock star with chants of "Sa-rah!"

Last month in the general election, Chambliss fell short of crossing the 50 percent threshold in a three-way race against Democrat Jim Martin and a Libertarian candidate, Allen Buckley, who drew 3.4 percent of the vote. The runoff between Chambliss and Martin will help determine the balance of power in Washington where Democrats are just two votes shy of the 60 votes needed to prevent Republican filibusters. The pressures of the runoff election and the continuing questions about his ties to a large, scandal-scarred sugar company seem to be getting to Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Asked by a reporter whether a lawsuit involving deaths at an Imperial Sugar plant -- a lawsuit in which Chambliss claims he has senatorial immunity from testifying -- were making his chances at reelection harder, the Georgia Republican responded by knocking away a nearby camera.

(CNN) -- The two major candidates in Georgia's hotly contested Senate race both said Wednesday they are launching runoff campaigns as votes continued to be counted and neither man held a majority.
At midday, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss led Democratic challenger Jim Martin, with Chambliss having 1,838,891 votes or 49.9 percent to Martin's 1,721,087 or 46.7 percent. Libertarian candidate Allen Buckley was credited with 3.4 percent of the vote.
"We're in a runoff," Martin said at a news conference. "This race has just begun."
Chambliss also called a news conference to declare, "We've already hit the ground. We're getting ready for the runoff."
A spokesman for the Georgia secretary of state's office said it will likely be next week before election results are finalized and certified statewide. A runoff would be held in December.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota secretary of state's office said Wednesday a recount will probably be held in that state's neck-and-neck U.S. Senate race.
"From what it looks like, that's where it's headed," said John Aiken, the secretary of state's director of communications.
With all of the precincts reporting, the unofficial figures show the Republican incumbent, Sen. Norm Coleman, leading the Democratic challenger, comedian Al Franken, by about 700 votes out of 2.4 million cast.

Now will he tell me his views on the election? “McCain is the only route to go,” he says. “Obama is a Muslim.” I say that Obama is a Christian. Doesn’t Mr Snow remember that he used to go to Jeremiah Wright’s church? “It don’t make a difference where they go,” he says, condescendingly. They? “A lot of coloured folks are turning to that,” he says, meaning Islam.
I wonder if Mr Snow likes Sarah Palin. It turns out that on the day she became Mr McCain’s running mate, Mr Snow and his wife were saving souls in Wasilla, Alaska. We say our goodbyes. “I’m so glad I got you on the gold streets of heaven,” says Mr Snow. “I’ll see you up there.”Now will he tell me his views on the election? “McCain is the only route to go,”... more

Looks like U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss wants to change the topic — back to gasoline and energy. Things were going so much better for the Republican incumbent’s campaign when the focus was on drilling rather being drilled by the stock market.
Republicans felt shortchanged last month when their victory of the summer — the caving of congressional Democrats on the offshore oil issue — was obliterated by the financial crisis on Wall Street.
With Georgia just finished with a serious gasoline shortage, Chambliss apparently thought it worthwhile to revive the topic.
This below, entitled “Insane” was posted on YouTube only a few hours ago. A spokesman for the Chambliss campaign confirmed that it’s a new TV ad headed your way.
Here’s the script:
Chambliss: “We have to get the gas price situation under control. We have to explore for oil right here in the United States.
“We’re dependent on foreign oil for 62 percent of our oil. We have more oil within our country than all the oil in Saudi Arabia.
“So why in the world would the left-wing Democrats in Congress oppose exploring for oil in America. That’s insane.”Looks like U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss wants to change the topic — back to gasoline... more
