FreeFest is back and tickets have “free’d-out” in just a few minutes, but Virgin Mobile USA, creator of one of the largest and most critically acclaimed music festivals in the country, has announced that music fans need not worry. Those still wanting to attend can volunteer their time with nonprofit organizations fighting youth homelessness in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia to earn a ticket to FreeFest. The campaign is part of The RE*Generation program, Virgin Mobile’s charitable initiative focused on ending youth homelessness.
The FreeFest volunteer program is powered by Causecast's innovative volunteer tracking and rewards technology. Now, volunteering is simple – just select one of the available volunteer opportunities, enter in your participation code after completion via the website or SMS text and redeem earned points for your ticket to FreeFest.
FreeFest is a great example of the impact consumer brands can make when they put their weight behind causes. Our volunteer tracking technology was built for this kind of worthwhile program, and we hope it will inspire other companies to do the same.
Although the festival is free, Virgin Mobile is encouraging donations be made to help provide educational opportunities for homeless youth. Homeless youth organizations working with Virgin Mobile USA include Covenant House, Sasha Bruce Youthwork and StandUp For Kids.

CC: Are there any causes that you guys, as a band, are passionate about?
Michael VanPelt: In a broad sense, I think, feeding ourselves has been the biggest cause for us.
Marty: [laughs] I think it comes down to, ultimately, whether you’re doing this because it helps everybody’s quality of life out, you know – the crowd, and us as musicians, and the other people who are benefiting from us in different ways, or whether you’re looking at it as strictly a money-making venture. And so, I think our cause is music. That’s what we do and that’s what we love to do, and whether or not we can make a living off it, we’d still be doing it.

SOS Outreach, a youth non-profit organization in Colorado, will give about 500 kids a chance to ride at six resorts in Colorado this weekend, including Vail, Keystone, Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin. The program is designed to introduce kids to snow sports who may never have had a chance to get involved:
More Than 500 Kids Will Hit the Mountains This Weekend
December 10, 2009 (DENVER, CO) — The nation’s largest youth winter sports nonprofit entered its 16th season of service in Colorado. This weekend, more than 500 students in Colorado will hit the slopes at half a dozen ski resorts courtesy of SOS Outreach.
The students will pick up tips from professional instructors to enhance their on-hill experience, but SOS Outreach founder and executive director Arn Menconi said participants will become involved in much more.
“Our aim is to give an experience of a lifetime to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity,” he said. “At the same time, we use the ‘cool’ factor of snowboarding and skiing as a hook for a multi-year core value curriculum that inspires the students to become more involved in the community by giving back.”
SOS Outreach Global Program Director Jon Garrou said public service was a primary emphasis of the organization for not only the staff and student participants, but the broader community.
“Something happens when people see kids doing something to improve their community, and they want to support that,” he said, adding that last year about 750 adults pitched in with on-hill programs as well as service projects initiated by multi-year students. “Snowboarding may have been what brought everyone together, but it’s become something much larger and more meaningful.”
In all, SOS Outreach partners with 39 mountain resorts across nine states, Canada and New Zealand. Menconi said without the steady support of Vail Resorts, the organization would not have been able to expand.
Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz said the company was more than happy to partner with SOS Outreach.
“Working with SOS Outreach, we are able to give the experience of a lifetime to kids who may not have the opportunity,” Katz said. “SOS has taken the time to understand the best way to reach kids, and with the excitement of their first chair lift ride or their first turn, each of the SOS kids is an inspiration to every one of our employees who work with them. We hope the experience makes as big a positive impact on their lives as it has on ours.”
This year, 3,000 youth will enroll in winter sports programs with SOS Outreach, half of whom live in the Denver area. SOS Outreach will serve another 1,200 students in outdoor sports programs during the summer months, for a total of 20,000 participant days across its programs.

LA & NASA: Radical Collaboration for Green Innovation
According to a recent announcement from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Pasadena institution (and its governing body Caltech) will be partnering with the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power to develop new water and energy-saving projects.
Bio-Plastics as the New Fool’s Gold
Bio-plastic has been touted as the environmental substitute to plastic. The problem? You can only truly compost it in an industrial setting where temperature and moisture reach levels that can break it down. Assume it can biodegrade in a landfill? Think again, oxygen needs to be present for any breakdown to occur and in landfills, where everything is compacted, that oxygen is…missing.
Arctic Ice Almost Extinct
A recent study reveals that the blanket of ice around the North Pole has thinned by over 40% in the past five years. Sea ice volumes reached record lows in 2008, a result of abnormally high temperatures across the world. The likely culprit? Climate Change.LA & NASA: Radical Collaboration for Green Innovation

CC: So, do you guys feel that the world right now is in a state of transition? And if so, do you think we’re heading towards an optimistic future, or dark and grim future?
Jamie: That’s actually – that is a very good question. I think we absolutely are in a time of transition. I think we have the advantage of having just experienced sort of a hopeful hump, you know – something happened last year where we made a transition as a country about who do we fundamentally see ourselves as. I think we all thought that those who believed in peace, those that believed in talking through our problems, or considering our country to be one among equals, I think we thought we were in the minority. We realized we’re not – we’re in the majority. That’s who America is. We fundamentally see ourselves that way. And yet now we can’t just think about what America is. Now we have to look at what a broken world it is, and what are the limits of our resources on this planet? And I think, sustainability has been a focus in our organization, but it’s the focus everywhere, because it’s gotten to the point where it’s really life or death. A lot of the changes we could see in the next few decades could fundamentally reshape human life on Earth. So we absolutely are in a place of transition. If we make the right decisions, it could be a transition where people could survive; if we make the wrong decisions, it’ll be one of really great disparity and well, pretty…

First up, LA beaches are toxic. Which isn’t surprising given our storm water assessment fees haven’t been raised since Pamela Anderson first appeared on Baywatch. With the Mayor’s Office dragging its heels (verrucas perhaps?), we encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own actions.
Next, we investigate what’s missing from the Appalachian Mountains. Hint: it’s not Mark Sanford. Seriously, because of Mountaintop Removal (MTR), large swathes of the Appalachias is unable to support life and is causing residents to become very ill. Help support non-profits take the coal companies and banks to task.
Finally, font otakus rejoice. Inspired by a local cheese, Dutch creative agency has come up with a stylish new font that saves the planet by saving ink. Brandon Boyd is the lead singer of the multi-platinum band Incubus, a prolific artist, an award-winning surfer, a credible musician and a female ‘heart throb.’ Despite all of his time in the spotlight, Boyd remains as friendly, down to earth, ego-free and socially aware as ever.
This summer, Brandon Boyd teamed up with artist and friend, Kristin Klosterman, for the TOMS Shoes Collaborative Canvas Project. The pair created works of art on massive canvases, which were then cut up to create special limited-edition TOMS Shoes.
Causecast’s Brandon Deroche caught up with Boyd at the release party to speak with him about how the shoes came to be, the higher form of communication presented in music and the hope for a singular state of mind known as peace.
Causecast: Can we talk briefly about how this came to be, and was it a tough decision to make?
Brandon Boyd: It was not tough to decide to want to do. I had met some of the people from TOMS previously and we talked about doing some type of collaborative project, but we didn’t really know what. We just knew that there was some sort of similar energy at work. So I kept seeing them, we kept just sort of brainstorming, and I was just saying to a friend before that I kind of assumed that they had already done a project like this. I think it would have come up sooner had I known. And we started brainstorming, you know, this came up, this idea of doing original canvases that they made into shoes. They hadn’t done it before so we were like “let’s do that.” And then they asked if I knew anybody that I thought would want to collaborate with something like that. So my friend Kristen is a friend, a really good artist, and my neighbor too, so it all just sort of came together, it wasn’t hard. It was hard to do because…it hadn’t been done before and there was no like, road map for it. Untreated, unstretched canvas is really hard to paint on too. So that part was difficult.
CC: That’s what I wanted to ask you – collaboration in music is one thing, but when it comes to painting, how do you decide what you want to paint together?
BB: (laughs) It seems kind of boring to present it like this, but…I never know what I’m going to paint until I’m painting it, and in this case with the TOMS collaboration, it was no different. Got to Kristin’s studio, and they had massive pieces of canvases in big rolls, and we rolled them out and duct taped them to the floor, and had a bunch of paint…just started painting, so…that’s my favorite way to paint. I don’t really like pre-meditating things too much. I’m still hell-bent on like the experience of painting, you know the process of painting, as opposed to like trying to achieve an immediate end result. So, I started working and the first canvas I did on my own, I was kind of feeling it out. On the second canvas, the one we ended up collaborating on, I started to get this flow, line work. I think some of the better shoes in the collaboration are from the second canvas, that was the one that Kristin and I did together.
