'Tool of indoctrination'
Obama's speech has ignited partisan passions among conservative groups, which accused him of injecting politics in the classroom.
Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the conservative Cato Institute, said the lesson plans accompanying the speech are "troubling."
"Reasonable people can disagree" about Obama's policies, he said. "But they don't want their kids to be indoctrinated. This is potentially a tool of indoctrination."
Fred Moses, chairman of the Collin County Republican Party, said he had not heard anyone who was concerned about the speech.
"As long as the president is not talking about his agenda or policies, we all need to encourage our kids to do better," Moses said.
Barb Walters, president of the Texas Democratic Women of Collin County, contended the outrage is mostly manufactured.
"Emotions are running so high in politics," she said. "People are just shoving signs and fists into people's faces these days. Whatever happened to civil discourse?"
Larry J. Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, said he doubted that Obama would risk criticism by giving a political speech.
"If this is simply a pep talk by the president of the United States to schoolkids," Sabato said, "to me that is in the category of mother and apple pie and the flag."

The members of Black Moth Super Rainbow have been churning out their own brand of roots electronica for the last decade, but it was only after the release of their third album, Dandelion Gum, an opening slot for the Flaming Lips, and a showcase at SXSW that music fans began to take notice. As the band prepares their second album for Grave Face Records, Eating Us, band leader Tobacco took some time to discuss the nature of nicknames, the accessibility of old-school synth, and how to avoid the sophomore slump by recording like professionals...

There’s a new zombie movie taking Cannes by storm - and no, it’s not Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2. It’s the film Colin by British indie director Marc Price and it’s getting a lot of attention because of how good it is and what it cost to make. Marc Price and his production company, Nowhere Fast Productions, put the entire movie together on a anemic budget of just $70.
It took Price eighteen months to film Colin and he did it by advertising for zombie actors on Facebook. To help keep his budget low...

Note: I am also the director of "Redneck Zombies" (1987) and I cannot tell you how amazing a feat this is to pull off such buzz at the Marché du Film. I would say Colin is 'one to keep an eye on.' - PericlesThere’s a new zombie movie taking Cannes by storm - and no, it’s not Rob... more

Redneck Zombies 20th Anniversary Viral Video Assault #6 0f 20
This video was created for the February 16th edition of the Diabolical BlogTalk Radio show honoring the Redneck Zombies 20 Year Anniversary as the cult classic.
This relatively benign 2 minute and 29 second clip will serve to dispel the myth that this 1987 independent horror hombrew comedy was not a "drug film made by addled maniacs" for viewers to get together and get "baked at elicit drug parties" to view for their euphoric pleasure, but a sincere stylized film that included segments of pure visual art reflecting the video installations of such pioneer video artists as Nam June Paik, Peter Campus, Joan Jonas and Benny Hill.
Redneck Zombies was one of the first independent horror movies shot and released on video, and the first to be distributed worldwide (Preceding the success of the "The Blair Witch Project" another Maryland film shot on video by 12 years). It has attained cult status and was the answer to a question in the 1980's edition of Trivial Pursuit:
Q: What movie had the tagline: "Tobacco Chewin', Cut Chompin', Cannibal Kinfolk from Hell?Redneck Zombies 20th Anniversary Viral Video Assault #6 0f 20

(Warning: Gore/ Eye Violence/ Cannabalism)
"Ferd" Actor Henry Dicker (Credited as Bucky Santini) discusses Redneck Zombies and his character, "Ferd Mertz."
For the production of the "extras" section of the Tromasterpeice Redneck Zombies 20th Anniversary Edition, Director Pericles Lewnes pulled nearly 9 hours from almost 120 hours of original camera footage.
From this, Producer Ed Bishop took the most intense, most incredible, most epic outtakes and condensed them to a mere 45 minutes. Nearly 17 hours of interviews were conducted with the original actors and crew that could still be found and were willing to talk about those horrifying days of production the back in the 1980's.
Ed was able to massage almost one hour from these interviews that told the true story Redneck Zombies. Most all of the interviews made it to the DVD, but some of the outtakes were left on the filthy floors of the Troma editing room to be swept into a corner for a future Blu-ray release.
IF you are lucky...
But Fear not! We we are in the age of the internets! So in proper Tromatic fashion, here are some outtakes that did not make it on to the DVD because they just were not good enough!
To Celebrate 20 years of disgusting, delighting and enraging audiences, the original filmmakers are producing 20 Redneck Zombies Viral Videos for each year in release...

There's been a huge spike in the production of zombie movies lately, and many of them seem to be inspired by war. Everything from 28 Days Later to Zombie Strippers make explicit reference to wartime, as did seminal 1968 zombie flick Night of the Living Dead. Is there really a connection between zombie movies and social unrest? We decided to do some research and find out. The result? We've got a line graph showing the number of zombie movies coming out in the West each year since 1910 — and there are definite spikes during certain years, which always seem to happen eerily close to historical events involving war or social upheaval.
Mostly we've focused on movies from the U.S. and Europe, and we've included the living dead among zombies — so mummies are included, but vampires and ghosts aren't. Obviously as you look at this chart, you have to correct somewhat for the fact that more movies are being made as we get closer to the present, and (more importantly) there are better records of those movies with better tagging. So it's easier to research movies with zombies in them if you're looking at productions from the 1980s onward. In addition, there's been a huge boom in indie and low-budget horror movies over the past ten years, and that undoubtedly accounts somewhat for the giant spike you see during the last 8 years or so.
Still, even correcting for the fact that there are more movies being made today, you can see that there are distinctive spikes in zombie popularity - and they always seem to fall slightly after a huge political or social event has caused mass fear, chaos, or suffering. That's why World War II, Vietnam, and the current Iraq War are all followed by a zombie rush at theaters. Obviously, if you're going to look at these historical correlations, you have to consider that movies inspired by a real-life event aren't going to show up in theaters for at least six months to a year, so we've accounted for that.
You can see that most of these spikes in zombie popularity do seem weirdly close to periods of historical trauma like wars or the AIDS epidemic. Is there a causal connection, or is it just coincidence? You be the judge. There's been a huge spike in the production of zombie movies lately, and many of... more

Now this will take a little explaining. I am posting this for the currents Thirteen Scariest Pods for Holloween.
This is a clip from the 1987 cult movie Redneck Zombies. Redneck Zombies was a comedic parody of horror movies from the 70s and 80s. It is currently about to be released in 20th anniversary edition by Troma with a CD of its original soundtrack.
This scene is a parody from the ORIGINAL Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was produced in 1974. So, if you have seen the original TCM, you might get a kick out of this, if not, well... I don't know what you will think.
I am very close with the people who made it, but have at it, RNZ is both loved and despised. Now this will take a little explaining. I am posting this for the currents Thirteen... more

If you live in the Minnesota/St. Paul, or northern Wisconsin area, perhaps you would be intersted in attending the FLYWAY FILM FESTIVAL in the beautiful and affordable resort town of Pepin, Wisconsin.
My independent feature, LOOP, will screen this Saturday night, October 11, in the 9PM (Central) Film Block along with the award winning independent movies, "Standing on a Whale," and "Marta's Sex Tape."
The Lake Pepin Art & Design Center is hosting the festival and will screen 32 cutting edge, though provoking and entertaining films.
I will be leaving tonight by car to attend the festival and I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet some friends from current_.
And no, I'm not making any money off of it. I don't really know where anyone lives, but I thought I'd put it out there if you are an indy film lover. If you live in the Minnesota/St. Paul, or northern Wisconsin area, perhaps you would... more
